JB & Jchelle radio interview Flip Phones of Shame - Merged

I also appreciate your recap, R&M, my curiosity about the content of the interview would not overcome my aversion to hearing the voices of Jim Bob and Michelle.

I looked up this covenant eyes, well, idk maybe the jury is still out. I have never really restricted my kid's internet access, which might be why my sons, heavy internet users, are agnostic and atheist. I am sure they have also done things online of which I would not really approve. Maybe I am a terrible, lazy parent and should have been more diligent to stand betwixt my kids and the culture.

My opinion is that in the longer run, it is wiser to expose and share values and how to cope with things rather than just try to hide from everything.

Even so, I find the accountability partner aspect of this to be wildly inappropriate. In maybe a very few situations would this be healthy, and then your ap needs to be someone like your therapist or parole officer. This dynamic is disturbing.

As for the romance novels, when I was deep in this world, pretty much anything that does not give God the glory for the victory is off the table, no matter how innocent or bland... Andy Griffith is a great example. It's okay to an extent but don't give it too much attention because Sheriff Andy doesn't even go to church.

Once upon a time, when my oldest was between 5 and 10, I got convicted in my heart about video games. I don't remember where I got it, but I found a few games that featured Biblical characters and that's what I let him play.

For my second son, his 17th birthday is next month, I got him GTA5.

Things have changed a lot since that marriage/divorce fiasco.

of course romance books are 100 times more interesting then her life. can't expect a woman to thinks she deserves getting treated like a human having orgasams and not having to submit to the husband anytime he wants it. No romance books blow their boats out of the water.

Several episodes of Sheriff Andy show him in church. :) They just don't show him praying over every little thing. Of course, he and Barney talked once in awhile about taking a drink and there was the town drunk.

I feel motivated to memorize the Book of Proverbs, tell JBoob he was my inspiration and can I have $1,000 please. I will spend half the $1,000 on frivolous possessions, cable TV, booze and porn. I will use the other $500 to send Jinger a copy of Delta of Venus and donate the rest to my local LGBT Pride Centre in the name of Michelle Duggar.

Jim Bob: everyone has thoughts that might be inappropriate or sinful, and that's completely normal. (!) People struggle every day to fight the temptation to sin.

Most interesting statement made. Please expound on this, JB! Is JB struggling?????

It would be interesting to see the history on his iPhone, if there is such a thing.

I think Jim Boob may be indulging and covering it up. Allegedly.

I also think Smuggar is watching a lot more than ball games or Andy Griffith on that gigantic flat screen in their room. Allegedly.

There, I said it.

Maybe JB has the same lusts- Moving Ben in is starting to make sense.

In terms of hell, I do not do the religion stuff. Hell, I get into enough trouble around here without delving into that topic!

what is their fascination with Andy Griffith?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DQnprVsl0E

ben and jessa said they watch that

at this rate they will never watch episodes of SITC

maybe Michelle's toes will curl watching Mr Big and Carrie going at it - when she was with Aiden :D :cracking-up: :cracking-up:

I agree, Rainytown. You make a living writing romance novels, and the idea that Michelle would weigh in in such a dismissive way, toward your style of writing or that of any other type of writing by a published author, is highly insulting. Especially when we take into consideration that this is a woman who's only real relationship was with Jim Bob, and who had her daughters publish a book that was, in part, about romantic relationships, when none of those young women had ever experienced one.

And your point about the smartphone is an interesting one. Jim Bob never once referred to the cheap tracfone by name, but he did call it "the phone where you have to hit each number three times to text." That was what gave it away. I don't think that Apple would agree with their smart phones being referred to as "personal pornography theaters," either.

I don't know, I think the "personal pornography theatre" feature is one of the iPhone's bigger selling points....

The over restriction of the Internet, especially for the teen and adult boys is just so wrong and is setting them up to be really curious about the darker sides of the Internet when they finally gain unrestricted access to it upon marriage. So they finally get access to porn at exactly the same time they get a real live woman to project their unrealistic expectations on.

My eleven year old daughter has an iPhone. My son is getting one for his tenth birthday in a few months. All three children, including the 8 year old, have their own laptops with Internet access - they need them for school. I keep an eye on their search histories and have rules about social media, but one of the advantages I see in them having their own devices is that they have the privacy to explore topics that they may not want to discuss with me or anyone else. So my daughter reads softcore fanfic about Finnick from the Hunger Games and I'm sure my son will want to look at boobs. But I can talk to them about the differences between fantasy and reality and about respect and consent within relationships and I can equip them to navigate the digital world that is such an inherent part of their lives, academic, social and recreational, instead of hiding it from them as a scary forbidden den of evil.

Some of the boys have to carry flip phones of shame? How depressing is that. And then to have your parents tell everyone.

I don't like that JB and Michelle publicly announced the flip phones of shame thing either (BTW I think "flip phones of shame" needs to be a post title). If the parents insist on acting as confessors for their children, I think that what the kids say should be private. Then again, the parents in question also have no problem with showing their kids sick, injured, soiled, naked, or humiliated on television, so I guess this is just more of the same. :music-tool: I guess now we'll be watching 19 Kids and Counting just to see who's carrying the flip phones of shame.

Maybe that's why David Waller was so dismissive of the "little flip phone" the farmer he was stealing pecans from used to call the Sheriff. He may have assumed that the pecan farmer was susceptible to porn and consigned by his accountabilibuddy to a non smart phone.

nothing like shaming your kids to make them two the line. but hey all their friends may be in the same boat.

They probably see it as a way to remind all of us "godless heathens, liberal Christians, atheists etc" of how godly (read: morally superior) they are and we should all follow their examples.

Thanks! And yes thanks also to the Duggars anyone that has a flip phone, what will pop into minds of listeners everywhere... The only thing that gives me hope is that she said SOME of the boys. I'd like to think while some of them are little Rodd and Todd Flanders's, there maybe a boy or 2 (I'm thinking about you, James) that saw the other guys get their IPhones exchanged for the latest technology of 5 years ago so when Ma & Pa Thought Police ask if any non-pure thoughts have entered his Charlie Brown shaped noggin, he replied none here nosirreebooby I mean bobby I mean daddy.

But they have turned me around now on keeping their children away from media. Now I think it's a great idea they do this because omigod how would teenage you like to hear your parents tell the world stuff like that about you? Especially after what they say was something you CONFIDED in them, supposed protectors of your heart?! If they had to go for this classless move, they could have said, "Oh Josh we had to turn the hose on him, no way would we had let him have an Iphone if they were available then." Or John David. At least telling humiliating things like with a little time gone by is better than real time shaming of your teenager.

: iphones are useful for directions, but temptation is there. He assures us that none of his girls would ever be interested in looking at pornography or anything stimulating, but that the risk is greater for boys. Girls are more aroused by touch, boys get excited by sight.

So JB get rid of your iPhone. It's sin. And wtf? Women would never look at pictures or porn. Okay JB. You're a sexist douche bag.

TMI: I discovered porn as a teenager. I looked at pornographic photos. As a woman I get excited by looking. I get excited by touch. Jim has a boring ass sex life. And how dare he throw his own kids under the bus. It's offensive to say they can't control themselves. They need "flip phones" because they might actually have sexual feelings. It's wrong to laugh and joke about its too risky for your boys to have access to the Internet. Which btw there's always a way around it. So Jimbob us saying he himself can't be trusted because he can't control himself. How the hell can men be leaders when they need their damn egos stroked and have to be babied. I don't blame Josh for trying to get laid and get the hell out of there.

These kids probably do a ton of shit JimChelle doesn't know about.

JB watches that fundie porn. :cracking-up: I could really see Jim Bob like Josh. Doing certain things and hiding it from Michelle.

Well now that we know - we can have a drinking game in support - we can call it the FPOSSG (flip phone of shame support Group) because they need support they don't need shame

:D

this whole confessing thing is a way for Michelle and JB to be in control all the time. They actually I believe don't care that Jed or Jer has sexual feelings for say Anna, what they care about is knowing about it and making them feel bad about it.

lording things over your children in their life is the ultimate power which apparently they need for some strange reaosn 24/7

IMO jason, Jed and Jer all seem like nice young men, opposed to Josh, JD and Joe who all seem arrogant and cranky again imo - maybe those later three are learning how to act from the older three and they see and act differently.

it's like a science experiment.

Leaders are the worst - they have the issues - clearly JB has the issues - he reeks of it IMO

I'd love to see both "flip-phone of shame" and "personal pornography theater" as user titles.

One of many things I found troubling about this whole exchange is the feeling that Jim Bob might almost be the more rational and supportive parent if not for Michelle's influence. We go from him stating that desire and temptation toward sin are normal and need to be avoided/curbed in many cases (which is something I can actually get behind, depending on what's tempting you) to Michelle saying that Satan is using temptation and desire to distract you from God's will. She states that if you admit Satan is working in you, it gets easier to admit you have a problem and find someone else to hold you accountable so you can resist. Jim Bob goes on to completely backpedal and agree with her after stating TWICE that it's completely normal to be tempted. And then JB gives Michelle the credit for her "A-ha!" moment where she brilliantly figures this out and works with the kids.

And if everyone is tempted how does having an accountability partner really help?

I remember parenting teens (and being a teen). What one kid wouldn't do, 2, 3, 4....certainly would. Like the brain power decreases as the impulse factor increases the more kids that are involved.

So, since the Duggar offspring are mostly perfect. I wonder what the heck JB and M did to those kids along the way.

What did JB and M do to nullify and eliminate all those developmental stages along way? Because that is what they did- and we see the end result. It's not pretty folks. Kids need to go through those stages to be able to build coping skills needed for adult life. Really, JB is not that much better than Steve Maxwell. So he lets the kids get married...all the more people to control.

It's brainwashing and cult life.

One of my friends has a teenage son with an iPhone. We've talked before about the challenges involved with raising a teen. Maybe the Duggars should purpose to spend some time listening to her approach.

Instead of being HORRIFIED that her baby was curious about pornography and sex (because he's a normal teenage boy with hormones and a sex drive, thank you) she sat him down and explained the reasons why he shouldn't be accessing that material on his iPhone instead of flipping out. Porn is not real life. In other words, the images are generated to excite and not instruct. She told him why it's important to NOT open or look at images he might be sent by another teenage girl for any reason. She's also talked with both of her sons (the other is a pre-teen) about consent and why it is important to treat women as equals. This has been an ongoing effort. I also know he's talked with her about issues I'm sure other parents (looking at you, Duggars) would freak out over, she's remained calm, answered his questions and done her best to keep a dialogue going.

This is a parent that will make sure condoms are available to him and encourage him to use them when the time comes, as well as making sure the young woman in question is consenting.

I think she's doing an incredible job. And I'm sure her calm acceptance of his impending adulthood and the reality of the fact that it's normal for a sixteen-year-old to have a sex drive has gone a long way to ensuring he thinks before he acts in all instances.

And I agree that "personal pornography theater" and "flip phone of shame" should be added to the post count pantheon. ;-)
