Most Over Used Fundie Words or Phrases

"God gave me a word for you." Meaning god has "laid it on their heart" to tell you something. Also referred to as a "prophecy." Usually spoken by a nosy old biddy who just wants to tell people how to live.

"Sweet fellowship" is the triggering one for me, mainly because sometimes fundies are just talking about visiting with friends, but during one instance, I think it was the Kelli Bates that used the phrase on their blog to describe sex with her husband.

"Headship" and "defrauding" are the ones that just crack me up. I refer to both my cat and husband as my headships, and I've told friends when a good-looking guy has seriously defrauded me. In return, I get some very odd looks.

"Convicted" is a big one.

I loathe Christianic jargon based on misquoted Bible verses with a fiery loathing.

"Laid it on my heart." Misquote of Psalm 119:11, "Thy word have I laid up in my heart, that I might not sin against thee." Means, "I have memorized Scripture in order to avoid sinning against God." Misquoted as "I have a strong positive feeling about doing this."

"Helpmeet." Misquote of Genesis 2:18, "And the LORD God said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.' " Uses the same word of the woman that is used of God in passages about God's saving help. Misquoted as "My wife, I think I'll keep her." :angry-banghead:

"Convicted." Misquote of John 8:9: "And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst." Means, "They slunk out because Jesus had punctured their mob mentality and reawakened their sense of right and wrong, thereby saving someone's life." The main problem with this one is the application of a neologism to something that was not invented by modern U.S. conservative Christians. No, you're not "convicted." You're convinced, you have a strong feeling about this, or perhaps you feel guilty. Unless you are directly quoting this verse in a situation where you had temporarily shouted down your own conscience, you're not convicted.

Take (or taking) dominion.

Season of singleness, when used by SAHDs.

God's plan (for me, for you, for the world...)

Having our children's hearts.

Sweet relationships.

Covenant wedding.

I bought a used copy of Steve Maxwell's book, and can only read a few paragraphs at a time. If only I could be paid a nickel for every time I read the word "heart" I would be wealthy.

It is so repetitive and robotic and repetitive and robotic and . . .

:angry-banghead:

Just thought of one more:

Kingdom work. As in, "Homeschooling our children, sheltering them from the world, and keeping their hearts, is KINGdom work."

What ever has already been said, it is a strange lingo indeed.

But also the very, very strange ways a lot of these people sign their blog-posts, the Maxwell "girls" have practicly made an artform of it:

Serving Jesus, Sarah

Joyfully His, Sarah

Jesus' girl, Mary

Only for Jesus, Sarah

-allthough lately they seem to be less "creative", sticking to "Joyfully His", perhaps they weren't frugal enough with their language

God's plan (aka Gothard's or daddy's plan)

Precious blessing (aka the n+1th kid which is a result of having sex)

Up to God (aka no responsibility for their actions)

You all hit most of my favorites from the old fundie days. A few more that set my teeth on edge:

"mutual submission" - used to describe traditional gender roles

"under the cover/authority of (father, husband...)"

prefacing major bragging with, "I am so blessed that..."

A season can be as little as a few hours.

Or in the case of Ken Alexander and the whole "wife ministering to hubby via sex" thing, a mere ten minutes or so. :nanner-sex:

Defraud/defrauding makes me want to scream. THAT'S NOT WHAT THAT WORD MEANS.

Exactly! Ttrust me, if I'm wearing a low cut shirt, I am most definitely not defrauding anyone. I am, in fact, laying it all out there, and since I wouldn't be letting them touch it even if I were wearing a caftan, there is no deception or fraud anywhere. :D

I also can't stand "sweet fellowship". It just sounds like they're all having some sort of big, fundie orgy whenever I hear it used. Or maybe my mind is just in the gutter... :P

And please, for the love of god, do not "witness" to me. On the couple of times it's happened to me, I've considered needing witness protection.

"WE ARE BEING PERSECUTED FOR OUR CHRISTIAN BELIEFS!!!!11!!111"

This one is what annoys my husband. His question is, why are Christians so insecure? There are like 3 gajillion of them on the planet, but they're so crazy upset about any perceived "threat" to their worship, like if they can't pray whenever, wherever, that's it. Christianity is finished. God's done. He's funnier about it (and louder), but that's the general idea.

Sweet Fellowship - bleugh, it just makes me feel bleugh

Praying!!!!!Eleventy!!!

Modest - when the family are totally not modest

Servants Heart - not necessarily a bad thing for the majority of us to do things for others. But when this is used for the children (old and young) about serving no one but their parents and basically doing all the hard work for them, it drives me nuts

LIBERALISM!!!! SOCIALISM!!!!! EVIL EVIL EVIL!!!!!

EVIL FEMINIST SLUTS!!!!

"Praying for the state of our country.....lets bring this country back to God!!!! And be how we used to be!!!" (a state that the fundies believe was all fine and dandy but really wasn't and their fairytale picture really never existed)

That needs to be re-phrased somehow and put on a T-shirt!

"Religion-pushers, if you 'witness' to me, we're gonna need Witness Protection" maybe?

They're also obsessed with "sit down and have a cup of coffee with me" in blog introductions/about me.

Gleaned.

One of the doctors I type for always talks about "gleaning" information from lab tests. Every time I type it, I think of Pecan Thief David Waller.

So much this! "Defrauding" means "promising someone something while stealing from him/her, and not delivering." A woman in a bathing suit isn't promising you ANYTHING, you dickwads.

Yet another misquote, this time of 1 Cor. 7:5, which discusses sexual agreements between two people who are already married to each other with the presumption that marriage is a mutual promise of sex on tap. "All the bodies I desire belong to me by right" is nowhere in Scripture and I think this is the most poisonous teaching to come out of fundamentalism by far!

Yep, their definition of "defrauding" is completely wrong. I can just envision my linguistics professor in college going ballistic over that one (she was also and English prof).

I hate the constant use of "witnessing" as well.
