Elizabeth Smart coming to Northwest Arkansas

She's a very nice girl, who takes her 'fame' in stride, and she seems every modest about everything, but I wouldn't pay to hear her speak. What is the topic?

I just hope she doesn't end up on 19 kids and Counting. She's a famous person that is a strong Christian...the kind of people the Duggars like. With her in Arkansas, I have a feeling the Duggars may try to use her as part of one of their episodes.

I don't think that will happen. The Duggars might not want to get involved on a personal level with a Mormon. Elizabeth or people that she is working with could do research on the Duggars and find out about Josh's comments on Mormons.

Would you mind pointing me in the direction of these comments? I did a brief search, but was only able to find references made by FJ posters, and not any actual quotes. Thanks.

Here's one where he implied that Romney's headquarters was an LDS temple. This was when he was still campaigning for Santorum.

I find Elizabeth Smart's parents to be incredibley creepy. After their daughter was kidnapped and raped and held in a mini cult they wrote and published a book (of which they kept part of the proceeds) and they made it clear that they never got any sort of therapy or counseling for their daughter.

I wonder if they withheld counseling for a reason? Something creepy in their own home?

Her parents just struck me as being too Stepford and weird. THey didn't seem very upset by their daughter's abduction. My mother still gets choked up about a burn my brother got when he was little, and he doesn't have a single scar left over from it (nor can he even remember getting the burns on his hands). So, you'd think that they would be less calm and smiling when discussing their daughter's kidnapping and rape.

She did get "church therapy" whatever that consisted of. As well, I would take the reactions of a mother with a grain of salt. I know my mother loves me, but she isn't an emotional person. She is more the something's wrong, let's fix it and get over it. Could be a personality thing for Elizabeth's mom plus I think the "keep sweet" mantra of the Mormons probably has messed with her emotions. I also feel that you never know how your going to react in such a horrible situation that many haven't gone through. I can think about how I'd react but truthfully I'll never know unless I was put in that situation.

Seeing pictures of Elizabeth Smart makes me feel really sad. She looks so sad and empty behind those eyes. I think I've only seen a couple where her smile actually goes to her eyes.

It's very true. It sadly is probably a combination of what happened and her upbringing in Mormonism. It's just sad. I see even Jaycee-Lee Dugard's smile go to her eyes, and Elizabeth's just isn't there.

All I can say is that Elizabeth is one hell of a kid, if only for the awesome way she gave Naggy Graceless [nancy grace] a smackdown on live TV. She gets props for that.

I worry about her -- I don't think any of the "'therapy" she's gotten has anything much to do with actual life. I think she's been forced into this "survivor" role for public consumption.

I hope I am wrong. Honest. I wish her the best.

I met her, once, before she was married. She was dating a guy who was friends with some coworkers. I'm not sure if it's the same guy she ended up marrying, as it was a number of years ago. Anyway, she seemed pretty genuine when I spoke with her, and she did not appear fake, nor her smile empty and forced. I'm not jumping to her defense, and I don't know her beyond one meeting, but I know photos can be deceiving.

I feel the same way. I hope that she overcomes what she went through and lives a decent life.

uber-Mormons, like her family, creep me out, but given how devoutly she was raised & appears to be staying devout, I hope she's finding peace in her religion. Maybe the rituals help provide her with some stability and the ability to give her intangible experiences a tangible outlet.

I worry that she'll have issues with intimacy now that she's married. I hope she doesn't. Some people are able to take what they need to from a horrendous experience, and turn it into a positive thing. Some people are also just able to say "what's in the past, is in the past" and force themselves to move on with life. I really hope that's the case with her.

I'm glad she's found her calling as an advocate for survivors. I think this probably gives her a lot of strength to move on. Regardless, I hope she's happy and living the life she dreamed of now.

hell, I'd go see her if this was near me. If you read the bottom, your $25 ticket gets you a free casino dinner, plus a goodie bag and $20 to spend in the casino. That's totally worth it, even without the speaker!
