Farm Hijabi

Ok, maybe this isn't worth it's own thread, but I think it's kinda funny, so I'm making a thread for it. I was looking at the testimonials on a hijab site today and came across this-

Michelle - Scotland

"It's interesting... for years and years I've hated my body because the kind of body that you need to have in order to fit into (and look good at it!) popular fashions is nearly impossible to obtain, Therefore I never bothered to spend any $$ on decent clothes and stuck with jeans-and-t-shirts frumpy slob-wear.

But then it finally clicked and I realized that God wants me to dress **modestly** and no matter what shape or size body, modest clothes work. So I've spent the past three years building up a tidy, modest wardrobe that fits my figure. And now I've treated myself to a gorgeous assortment of fantastic hijabs! Wearing hijab gets me into all kinds of trouble. I might as well reach into my closet and pull out a fab hijab and feel good wearing it seeing as how it's going to get me into trouble for the rest of my life. I've even had to shut down a blog due to excessive harassment ~ and one of the women knows where I live! (I've already had women here send someone to my house to tell me off for hijab.) Check this out:

Because of me standing by hijab and denouncing immodesty: "you are sick, michelle; i am no way what you call a "feminist" how anyone can have so much hatred in their mind as you so is unbelievable;poor erland and elspeth"

Okie-dokie... but like I said, she knows where I live and I have no idea what kind of freaky stuff she might try and pull. (And her comment was actually the most, uh, moderate.) So I shut down one blog and made my hijab blog private. I'm sick and full of hate because I believe that women should obey God and dress modestly. I'm Catholic ~ What would they do if I was a MUSLIM?? Dare I ask? Sheesh. (At church several women tried to get it so that I was made to sit in the back... good gravy!!)

I love all of the scarves! All 10,000 of them!! I know, I totally splurged ~ but why not have lovely hijab scarves when you know that wearing hijab is going to bring endless harassment for the rest of your life? Might as well be harassed while wearing something shnazzy on your head!"

Is the harassment referring to FJ? Did we snark her? I can't remember. Anyway the testimonials can be found here

al-mujalbaba.com/testimonials/ Hers is #17 on the page.

ETA- Found another a little further down.

Michelle - Scotland

"I LOVE your colorful, fun, pretty, and funky modest clothes and head coverings! I'm Catholic, not Muslim, but I believe in hijab (thanks to living off and on in Bahrain!) and I'm going to love wearing these fantastic headscarves!"

Of course we snarked on her, but I think it was more one week she was dressing Amish, then the Hijab, then Amish again while pushing her designer triplet stroller to town on a very rural Scottish Island. I think she wore medieval clothes in there somewhere too.

I liked reading her old blog, seeing how she was decorating the place for her and the kids. She was a little crazy, but in a fun way.

Don't forget the porntastic Transformers fan fiction she wrote! That's my favorite.

She's said a lot of super nasty "pro-life" bullshit also, but haven't they all.

I have mixed feeling about Michelle :?

I sometimes like her, she seems to struggle a lot with her health and she has 3 kids one year apart (a daughter and one year later twins), she lives in a very remote part of Scotland (Orkney), I used to like her homemaking posts when she was learning to be a farmer wife and a mother...

... but there are the multiples posts full of hate about gay people and anti abortion and so on...

She is a bit off and I don't think it's people from this board who "harassed" her, it was several years ago, though...

Ah Michelle. Now she's the voice of Catholic Orkney. She's crazier than a loon. I think she has to have some kind of outside income to keep buying all the crap she buys for herself. Her husband is taking care of the 3 kids ( little girl and boy and girl twins) because she has a bad back. Doesn't stop her from taking how to write and draw comic classes. She's on Deviant Art and she is still doing transformer fan fic ( )

There's a picture of the family on a post at catholicorkney.blogspot.com where's she is dressed in an ugly cape dress with a Little House on the Prairie hat. She's posting on gay marriage in Scotland and going to a meeting with the MP I guess, and she's not even a citizen. She's freaking American. And she rants on and on.

She's not keeping up her blog much these days. And the persecution is from her husband's family who thinks she is bat shit crazy.

I remember her mostly because she once said on her DA journal that she couldn't understand how cross hatching worked. That is basic, basic stuff. :? I'm not saying it's the easiest thing ever (I kinda suck at crosshatching because I don't have the patience for it), but if you can't grasp /how it works/ you are going to have a very, very hard time in art classes.

Ole Scotty (Erland, IIRC?) is tendng to the kids while Michelle plays, eh? Hm, a far cry from when she was begging him in letters to understand her need to have his respect and affection.

She's so militantly Roman Catholic, I don't get it. She whined about how Romanists were treated shabbily in mostly Protestant Scotland but from your reports she doesn't seem to have much respect outside her own denomination.

I've sometimes wondered if she won't eventually just embrace Islam, and not a middle-of-the-road, thoughtful version of that religion.

Michelle was a co-participant on a discussion group I belonged to around the time she got married and moved overseas, that's my history on her. I do appreciate everybody's looking at her blog, because I can't. If I were lucky enough to live in Orkney, I'd be enjoying myself a lot more than she seems to!

Oh god, and it's not even GOOD Transformers porny fanfiction. o.0

(Why do all the weirdo people in that fandom have delusions of being sheepfarmers? Really?)

Michelle is one of my really good friends. We've known each other since about 2005 and we talk on the phone several times per month.

She actually does take care of her children. Erlend works hard on the farm day and night, so the times you may hear her mention he is watching them, might be the time she has to take a shower, write, draw or just sit down with a cup of coffee and gather her thoughts before Erlend has to go back to work.

She does the best she can, just like I am sure all you moms do. ;)

I think she was snarked on long before FreeJinger found her. I remember her first on the Choosing Home Forum, and then on the BBC's Island Blogging where she was quite an oddity and took a lot of stick. She had several blogs before Farm Hijabi and on a very small island she was easily identified and upset quite a few local people who made their dislike of her quite clear.

I must say, if I have a 'pet fundie' at all, it is probably Michelle, because she is one of my gateway fundies. I think her behaviour is very often horrendously hateful but, at the same time, I find her writing strangely compelling and bizzare-ly hilarious. There is something very vulnerable about her and I keep hoping she will get help and break out of the strange version of Catholic Fundieism that she seems to have created for herself.

So... I looked you up, biblegirl, and it seems that you are called Dawn, and are quite possibly The Dawn with whom Michelle had a very public falling out a while ago.

I actually don't find it hard to believe that Michelle is good at the day-to-day care of her children. I think that she is very down-to-earth in many aspects of her parenting, and I used to enjoy the blog posts where she taped paper to the floor and let the kids paint all over it etc. She does seem very vulnerable and a bit quixotic though and I hope she decides to send the kids to school when they are old enough, so they can all have some space and time to themselves.

Welcome to freejinger!

Yep, that's me! :P We never really fight though. I just let her say what she has to, then I say what I have to and we move on. With my latest blog post, she tore in to me in the comments section. So I let her get it all out, then I finally got in to say what I needed to. It's funny, over the phone and letters, we aren't like that at all. We're both fairly normal...honestly. LOL. Maybe she just always wants to be right or have the final say in things, ya know? Some people are like that. That's okay. We still live in a world of free speech.

Her eldest daughter has begun Pre-K this year.

I guess it's nursery school then. She had posted a pic of Elspeth on her FB a few days ago saying she was starting pre-K, so I guess that's Scotland's version of nursery school.

No, she's translated it into American. Pre-K = mums and toddlers' group or playgroup. Kindergarten = nursery. Quite often you just have a nursery and they take all ages from babies to 5 year olds (that's when they start school).

Although, who knows with Orkney. Bloody teuchters ;)
