Finally, a nice looking, modest, fundy wedding gown

I think this is a nice example of a good looking, modest wedding gown. Though I was sort of surprised the bride chose it, as it is "revealing" compared to what she usually wears.

My mothers, married in the 1960s, wore a dress almost exactly the same but the neck is higher and it was ivory not white. She had it made as a copy of her grandmothers dress, who was married around the turn of the century. I wonder whether this girl has been looking at old family photos for design ideas? It is very pretty. :D

I was wondering something similar, it might even have even belonged to a family member. Fundies seem to like to borrow wedding dresses.

That's just the kind of dress I'd like to wear if I ever marry. It's gorgeous and it flatters her.

I think it's very pretty, but most fundies would think it's not really modest cuz it shows the shape of her breasts. Steve would be defrauded for sure.

It is very vintage looking and I agree, very lovely. It's not really modest though, she's not wearing a shapeless sack or a paper bag.

Is it possible she bought it off the rack, and had the lace covering added to it? It looks like many of the strapless gowns that are out there. It truly is beautiful.

I also like the dress worn by someone in the background.

The purple one, or the grey one? I was thinking that the grey dress was outdated and unattractive. Reminds me of something from the 80's.

Oooh, I love it! I would wear it too. I want a fall or winter wedding so probably would either do something with sleeves or add a cape or shawl. I also like her hair.

I think I saw that dress someplace when I was shopping. If I'm not mistaken the see through top is actually removable (buttons in the back). I've seen so many dresses so I could be wrong.

There's some return to boleros and see through sleeves. ANd there are lots of lace sleeves. I think it wouldn't be considered modest because the sleeves are see through though.

Anyone have opinions on Drew Barrymore's wedding dress? The minute I saw it on the cover (even before hearing her husband's very Jewish name) my first thought was "Did Drew convert?" INdeed she had. I liked the dress sans the ruffles around her neck, it was modest and fit her pregnant belly well, but didn't have the thick satiny material that seems to be de riguer for modest dresses.... I always feel like the material looks crunchy and shiny in most dresses that modest brides have available to them (unless you're like Drew and can buy Chanel or go to the modesty specialist at Kleinfelds).

That is a lovely wedding gown! I frankly am tired of so many strapless wedding dresses and it's not because I'm a prude. It's just because that's often all that's available and they are just not flattering to every bride. It's funny, too, over at Tom and Lorenzo. when they had posted both some Chloe Dao's gowns and Oscar De La Renta's bridal collection, many people were thrilled to see some gowns with sleeves.

I personally think that Pnina Tornay gowns are taaack-kee.

I wouldn't be surprised that Drew's gown was designed just for her by Karl Lagerfeld.

Some similarity to Duchess Kate's dress.

*sigh* People are going to say that for years about any woman who wears a wedding dress with sleeves...

(And technically, she's never "Duchess Kate" or "Princess Kate" but the Duchess of Cambridge or Princess William--I'm sure the fundies, if they ever talk about her, would use the latter title!)

That is really pretty.

Add me to the list of fed-up-with-strapless-wedding-dresses please. They look awful and are not. flattering. at. all. on some brides. Do none of these ladies have mirrors? They look like they just got out of the bath and wrapped a towel round themselves.

Modest, yes, but I dunno about nice-looking. The bustier doesn't seem to connect with the lace overlay, so it looks like a strapless dress with a lace overshirt than one complete garment. To my eye, it's sort of jarring and throws off the overall effect. Maybe if the under-dress had straps of some kind, they would blend together more fluidly. But what do I know from wedding dresses?

Agreed with the frustration in re: lack of sleeves, though. Not all of us can have triceps like Michelle Obama (and more's the pity, because dayum, girl's got two tickets to the gun show going on).

When Kate Middleton stepped out of the car on her wedding day, and I got that first good look at her dress, I wasn't sure I liked it (though it did grow on me). But I did say, out loud, to the assembled cats, "OH YAY, IT HAS SLEEVES!" Because not only did that mean an end to the long, awful years of ubiquitous strapless wedding dresses, but it potentially means that sleeves will return to evening wear in non-frump form, too.

So the dress pictured is nice. There's something weird about the way it's put together that's bugging me, though. I think it's mostly because the fit around the shoulder and armhole isn't right. The "strapless" part fits her like a glove, but the sheer top doesn't. And the loose fit at the shoulders makes the neckline look too wide (whereas it would look fine if the shoulder fit correctly).

I also think she could have used some jewelry and a more formal hairstyle; she's adorable, but looks like she's wearing her grandmother's dress from 1963. As a complete look, it's not really coming together--she's missing certain elements that would make it all "click." But given how aesthetically impaired fundies tend to be, and how relentlessly unstylish? I'd say she did a fine job. It's a far, far cry from the usual Bad Satin t-shirt dresses (or Meredith's shiny thrift store nightmare).

Yeah, I like the idea of it, but the execution leaves something to be desired. It's way too obvious that they added the lace bit afterwards. Not that there's wrong with making alterations to an existing garment, but a good dressmaker should be able to make an addition to a dress look a little more natural. The sleeves, in particular, look like whoever was working on them just gave up.

OK, so this fundie bride is channeling Princess Grace instead of that other person. Honestly, who cares whether I call her by her correct title. :hand: :hand: :hand:

I like the dress. But I'm very partial to vintage dresses and/or vintage inspired dresses. Count me in as hating the strapless thing so much. I have boobies. Major boobies and they just don't work well with strapless; I always look smushed together in a horrible way. I'm sure it may just be the dress, the fit, blah, blah, blah but I miss at least cap sleeves.

As for Kate Middleton's* dress, I loved it immensely, not just because I hoped it would be the end of the strapless crap. I thought it lovely and yes, obviously inspired by Grace Kelly's dress.

*she'll always be Kate Middleton to me. When she's the Queen of England she'll be Queen Kate Middleton. But I'm a gauche American so I can get away with ignorantly flaunting the finer points of royal titles.

Maybe the dress isn't as nice looking as I thought. Well, not from this angle anyway.

Also I fail to understand how people who are so hell bent on modesty have no qualms about taking "such photos" and flaunting the fact that now since they are married it's okay to show it in public. I would think this would be a no-no (in public anyway) for people who preach modesty. WTF? This is one reason (among many) that Michelle & Jim-boob really bug me too. Dang, practice what you preach fundies!

I love the overlay, the sheer fabric. It seems a bit more individual than some of the shapeless satin sacks some fundie brides wear.
