Rape Victim Arrested And Denied Contraception

my mom was a nurse in a jail infirmary. only nurses can administer medicine and then only on a doctor's orders. she should have been to the nurse for a health screening before she was booked. the nurse should have made notes and called the doctor, even if it was after hours. all facilities have 24 hour medical care available, even if they have to call someone in.

the guard should be reprimanded/fired for not passing on such a urgent need. but he would not have been able to administer a medication to her under any circumstances. if he did, he would be guilty of practicing medicine without a license.

i hope she's not pregnant. she should sue the facility, as well as the guard himself personally.

On the one hand, had the victim showed up for her court date and paid her fines, she wouldn't have been arrested. On the other hand, surely someone in the Tampa PD had the power to escort the woman out a side door after she had completed reporting her rape, instead of arresting her.

In a perfect world, Michele Spinelli will develop type 1 diabetes (if she doesn't already have it), and get locked up for a minor infraction only to be guarded by a Christian Scientist (or anyone who's religion believes in prayer over insulin).

It may be my normal morning fog, but why do you wish Diabetes on this woman? She made a very poor choice, but Diabetes is a horrible disease and can be life-threatening.

On the refusing to give a prisoner medication note, this is something that freaks me out - being arrested for some crazy reason and not having access to my medications. I am on so many different meds and take them throughout the day, that even a few hours (not to mention days) can be detrimental to my health. I've watched some of those televisions shows that depict what happens after you're arrested - the processing, the paperwork, the wait to see a judge - and during that time, a lot of the people arrested are left for hours and hours before seeing someone.

It's a huge, if irrational fear of mine, but there's always a chance you're in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This was my initial train of thought. "Where was the jail nurse?" I have a few friends who do jail and prison nursing and I'm more inclined to think that some mishmash of miscommunication and probable underfunding for prison healthcare resulted in the woman not getting her Plan B -- but I also live in Kansas, so I can also totally see her getting denied Plan B based on religious beliefs.
