Fanfiction.net's future removal of "bad" stories

Fanfiction.net is talking about removing stories that have violent situations, sexual situations, inspired by a song, and much more! Now I understand if they remove stories that are like totally bloody with graphic violent details or just plain pornographic, but some stories have violent situations that aren't totally graphic or have sexual situations that aren't entirely from a porno film. Fanfiction.net is going to be removing good stories! This is an invasion of free speech! There's a reason why the site has a ratings system where you can choose to not read the "M" rated stories!

ff.net was merely reiterating an existing policy when everyone started freaking out about this a few weeks ago. It's not new. It's been in the rules and guidelines that you just click through (at least I do) in order to post something. They probably got a complaint, and they need to repeat the policy...but they don't have the staff to be able to go through the thousands of stories and see what doesn't adhere to guidelines (unless a specific story has been complained about). Hell, they don't even have the staff to keep their servers working all the time...

I can't get too worked up over story removals in the pit of voles. And as Aerial said, it's my understanding that the policy hasn't changed. If people want to post adult stuff they can do it at Archive of Our Own or at loads of fandom specific sites that welcome R or NC-17 rated content.

**ETA: Unless fanfiction.net is the government, this is not a free speech issue. A privately run and hosted website can set any rules they like. If authors don't agree with the rules, they can post their work elsewhere.

Hardly the biggest problem with ff.net. The real issue (which underlies this one) is that they are horribly inconsistent with enforcing the rules. Even when legit complaints are made, they rarely bother to do anything.

I heard about this petition recently from a friend and I also saw a thread on a TV show forum that discussed this. Last year, I was checking out the Glee boards on IMDB and I remember there were posters who complained about ff.net allowing Glee fanfics that featured rape storylines. I read some of the fanfics that those posters mentioned and a couple of the rape scenes were very detailed but it wasn't anything that would need to be removed.

Another site that allows very adult type fanfics is livejournal. I know some fans that prefer to read fics from LJ or archive of our own.

I wish they would remove the stories that really ARE bad. You know, the ones that start like this:

"I can't believe he's doing this" Harry sighed angrily.

"I know me neither" Ron agreed crossly.

"It's just unreal" Hermione chimed in madly.

Or anything whose description goes something like: sorry for any mistakes this is my first story about how blah blah pls read the story I suck at summaries lol

Jumping in to say, I wouldn't trust LiveJournal very much anymore, and certainly not as an archive or primary posting site. Ever since SixApart and then later SUP came in, it's policies concerning creative and adult themed content have been inconsistent, hit or miss at best; the Russian management especially is quite open about the fact that they don't like and don't want that content anymore and fandom is only going to slowly dwindle on there. Pretty much the only fandom people I know who are still there are either permanent account holders or clinging to their old journals for sentimental reasons (count me and my partner of six years in both of those - we met on LJ).

Dreamwidth or Tumblr is apparently where it's at! Or of course the Archive.

And seriously, not to be rude but my first reaction to the threat of ff.net removing good fic... um, is there much of that in the first place? The place is crap, and I don't know many authors who would wish to be associated with it at this point. Man, it's been years since I'd seen "Pit of Voles"... brings back memories!

I can still remember when they actually changed the policy to eliminate songfics, highly sexual or highly violent fics, real person fics, etc. That was years ago. It really is nothing new. I dunno why people are getting to wound up about it now.

Did they get a change in management recently? Or just an influx of people complaining about all the naughtiness? It's so frustrating, though. If it's going to be a "K-T+ fiction only" site, then don't even offer the R-NC 17 option and, for Dog's sake, be consistant with the rules!

"Her mother had rented a house in the forest to make sure the Death Eaters couldn't find her. That technically made her a coward"

I love the thought there's a technical definition of a coward. :D

And of course Dumbledore shouting "MOTHERFUCKERS!"

QFT. Some of the stories on there are so terrible, you've got to read them. It's like watching a train wreck, then you look at the clock and think "What the fuck did I just read?" I could have summed up that story in two sentences. For example,

Harry gets help from goblins. Goes shopping. Finds Molly doses him with potions for Ginny. Has (off screen) sex with Hermione, (whose love of Ron is never mentioned) and walks off into the sunset with more money than Merlin and more power than the ICW. That is, if it isn't abandoned four chapters in.

Okay, three sentences, sue me! But don't BCUZ I DNT OWN HP!!!Eleventy!!! And I can write a paragraph proving it that is very phunny!

I may be slightly biased in favor of the Pit of Voles, since that was my first exposure to fandom, but if this gets all of the quality porn to migrate over to AO3 or LJ/Dream, then I'm all for it! Well done!

I've seen some script fics that were decently written, and for some media could just work better than a traditional style. In other script fics it's clear that the writer was being lazy.
