Family Economics Conference 2012 - Maxwells, Dougie and more

I noticed that the Maxwells are booked for the Family Economics Conference in March, next year. They must be desperate for custom to associate with so many other real-life people for a weekend. I wonder if they will strike up an impromptu blue-grass concert as an alternative to the re-enactment party that Dougie will be leading...

Interesting. I think this is maybe the first page I've seen mentioning the Maxwells and Dougie together?

I mean, surely plenty of VF faithful are into the ChorePack thing, but I don't recall the Maxwells ever pimping VF product like so many of his actual fan families do.

"The Maxwell family lives in the Kansas City, Missouri area with 6 children at home and 2 married nearby"

Nearby? They practically have their own version of the Kennedy compound.

It says they raised BOYS. Guess the girls raised themselves. They also cut 2 kids out of the picture.

It is an economics conference. The girls don't count. They are not raised to earn an income, so what role do they have in economics?

They said they raised their two oldest boys to buy their homes debt free. Does that mean the other boys are not being raised the same way?

Oh, wait. None of the rest are being raised with the goal of them actually leaving the nest, so why bother with that stuff for the rest of them?

O.M.G.

If I was in America I would go to this. I would so go. So much snark material in one place.

I would also take my friend who is an economist. And a Marxist. She could ask them questions to make their heads asplode.

The frumper wearing would be worth it. Hey, the ends justify the means!

I would love to go and see them at a 'real' conference, where they cannot control who asks questions about what. I wonder if they will get away with their usual scripted crap. Their usual line to questioning is to close the conversation because they detect an 'unteachable heart'.

I desperately want to attend this conference....but I'm intrigued by this "Thrifty Couple"-- why not Money-Saving Mom?? I know Crystal and Jesse have been in big with Dougie in the past- this seems like the ideal conference for them to hawk their product. I know there has been some speculation that Crystal is distancing herself from the crazies, but I don't know if I really believe that. Thoughts?

This. I have always believed they don't participate with others for this very reason - it could remove some of Steve's control. In this economic conference thing, Steve is not the organizer; Steve is not the planner; Steve is merely a guest speaker at someone else's event. Sooooo far removed from normal.

But, I think it also speaks clearly about what we've been discussing - they're self-promotion tours in Uriah are drying up. No Steve controlled conferences scheduled for 2012 and they have to do something, so they're lowering themselves to join with others.

I wouldn't go to this thing unless I were offered a huge amount of money in exchange. My brain would explode.

OMG, I can't believe it. The Maxwells give conferences, they don't attend them! Think of all the godly young men and women Sarah and John might meet at a VF event! Conversations that Steve can't control! Acquaintances that he can't vet ahead of time! It's all so terrifying! He's going to be a nervous wreck the whole time. He and Teri will be policing their kids 24/7 to keep them separate from the others.

I so want Sarah to meet someone. This could be her big chance!

Plus, it's at a college. Classes s/be in session in March. Wheaton is a good school, too.

It's great to hear that the Maxwells are going to see people outside of their comfort zone. Maybe Sarah will finally meet someone!

The family conference sounds like a big snore. They talk of starting family owned businesses, add in a dash of reclaiming American spiel sprinkled with some "socialism is evil" crap and voila!---reclaim America for those God-fearing Christians once again! Whatever floats their boat. We all know the real reason these fundies are so big into family businesses. It isolates them from horrible heathens and secular Christians. It means they can discriminate against gays, and not take orders from feminist, baby eating women, and keep their kids in a controlled environment. Dad's in charge and there's no argument. Perfect for any patriarchal advocate.

Most small businesses struggle and many fail, especially in this economy. I'd wager many fundies, with their hatred of real education, their closest isolation, their large families and young marriages are financially struggling. I wouldn't be surprised if some have used gov't aid to feed their kids or pay doctors' bills. I wonder how some feel about participating in organizations which tell them only evil nonChristians use welfare? And that real Christians, blessed by God, would have everything provided? What goes through those cash strapped fundies' minds?

Indeed. I'm quite looking forward to seeing the posted schedule of sessions once it gets up there.

Add me to the list of people hoping Sarah can meet someone (or even just see the regular Wheaton students walking around and doing their thing, apart from the conference - it might make some impression, one would hope, just to see independent young people. People younger than she is, even, operating ON THEIR OWN. Not walking around in family units 24/7.

(Nothing wrong with families, but most families are only ONE of the networks each member is independently involved in, even if the most important one for a lot of people. Normal 30 year old women even living at home belong to clubs or workplaces that their mothers are not a part of. They can talk to Mom about interesting stuff they did or heard that Mom has not also already heard live, just imagine!)

When the Maxwells give one of their own conferences (and I agree with FundieFan too, I think this is a sign those gigs are drying up) they do meet people and see people, but always as entire family units, given the sort of churches they perform at. No one sees independently moving young people at those.

I've got noone for Sarah, I am trying matching in the real world currently :)

I would consider going to this as the megabus goes to Chicago, but I am not paying $99 to go hear these fruit loops speak. If someone paid me $99, I would do it. :) We need to find a free one....

Could we not get together an FJ 'family' of Duggar proportions to split the family rate? :D

that's a great idea! and i would volunteer to be the pink-haired, pierced, "rebellious" one that they're trying to get back into the family fold...
