Fundie Daughters and Photography

It seems like SAHDs have a boatload of time to devote to photography. I work full-time and adore photography. I have a nice camera and I'd love to learn to use it better but I haven't had the money to take a course. I'm wondering how this SAHDs foster this photography hobby. Sometimes the girls post about the cameras they use, etc. Where the HELL is the family getting the money to pour into a SAHD photography hobby? One of the blogs I read the writer was saying how she spent $1,200 on a camera. This girl's a recently married Lina-esque individual. The Brookshire sisters often post about photography too. And Beth.any Wiss.man has a new lens post up too...

Sorry if this is a silly topic, but it's something I'm curious about. If they are SAHDs with no income... who's fronting the dough for their cameras and neato lens?

Some SAHD participate in family enterprises or have their own business on the side (like making clothes or whatever). Their room, board and food costs are all paid for. The money they earn on the side ("pin money") could be saved up over the course of months for camera. It's no different than any teen or adult child living at home who has a job. The difference is some SAHD may turn over their money to the family and get a small allowance. Other SAHD may not be allowed too much in ways of getting jobs, they may still get allowances or do something fundie approved that happens to generate income.

The Maxwells are good examples of all this. Both the boys and girls get paid for working in the family enterprises. Since most are still living at home while earning income, that money can be used to buy cameras, phones, laptops etc. In the Maxwell case, I figure having an older brother who is a professional photographer means they can also get hand-me-down cameras.

It's not too hard for SAH working teens/adults to save $1000 for a camera if they are judicious with their money and patient enough to wait. I mean, even the most fundie families that forbid working SAHD will probably give her allowances to spend on her person affects. I can imagine accumulating the savings over the course of months and years for a nice camera.

I've noticed that too (and some of them are quite talented, actually). I suppose it's because it's one of the few hobbies (besides "feminine" crafts like sewing, etc) they're allowed to do.

Raquel's photography drives me crazy. Not that she's a bad photographer, but the constant pictures of herself in the mirror and the naming-her-camera thing make me cringe. It's very childish, I think. Also the talking about her camera as if it's an animate object; no, Raquel, your camera doesn't "like" anything.

Many of them earn a little income through crafts, sewing, babysitting, or other small jobs. Earning a nice camera and lenses takes time but as someone pointed out they have no expenses. There is so much information available for free online through forums and blogs that I'm not sure a paid photography course would even be needed for the types of photos they take.

That wife has a photography business too, complete with the very expensive Canon camera.

It is kinda sad that if they weren't fundie they might be able to do something with their talents not just blogging i mean but an actual outside the house job.

Some of the photos on the blogs i read are professional looking really.

Did you see her latest post? It is pretty much all pictures of herself and she might just do more posts like that! But she is totally modest. I realize she is a teen and all, but even the teens I know aren't usually self-absorbed enough to do post after post of nothing but pictures of themselves.

Was it the blogger from unusual maiden that was really into photography? It seems to be a hobby for a lot of them.

a lot of them have professional equipment and seem to know enough and speak the language just like a professional would. it's just baffling some of them have thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of equipment, then they post photos of the chickens in their barn or close-up shots of one of their many siblings' children. I don't see many of them taking what could appear as a paying job involving photography. I'm just thinking.. if they are on a stipend from Daddy, it would take YEARS to save up enough for some of the cameras they own.

(I was looking for a link to the specific post where the main SAHD I was thinking of showcases her new $1200 camera but the post has disappeared from her blog)

Because how many customers want a photographer who has to bring a brother/father with her on every job, and who is not allowed to be a room alone with a man, or even talk to him unless said family member is present? Unless they set up business photographing only like-minded women and their daughters. but since every fundy family seems to have a daughter photographer already, there's probably not much of a market for this... :D

Now, they could get into online photography, with sites like Shutterstock or Etsy, that let them sell their pics online. Wonder if any of them do this under a business name we don't know about? :?:

If the family has a business, the camera (and other computer equipment) could be a tax write-off. I noticed the Arndts had nice computer/video equipment, but they have an online ministry. Even the Jeubs seemed to have some nice techy toys while struggling with food and clothing for their large clan.

The one I was thinking of does have a side business selling prints, but I couldn't tell you how well she does. Sites like Etsy have a bazillion users. Whenever I go on there, I have to search "Frog shirt for toddler boy" to find what I am looking for. Unless she's on Etsy and someone purposely searches for "black and white photo of soup spoons" I don't know how anyone would find her work. I think some of the fundie daughters do freelance-y work, either taking occasional photos for sites online (cooking sites, etc) and doing portrait work for fellow fundies. But I always wonder if they are paid for that. I know one of the Brookshire girls posted about taking some photos with the photographer at a fellow fundie wedding. I don't know if it was a mini-internship.

On a side note, those girls are both very talented. It's a shame the one who draws so well has no desire to go to college, she'd be a shoe-in at a prestigious art school, I'm sure. I wonder how the company/paper doll collection they started has panned out for them financially. I saw it for sale at Vision Forum.

I read the title of this thread as "Fundie Daughters and Pornography" not once, but several times. Yes, I am 12.
