Coronavirus 5: Let the Vaccination Begin

The Episcopal diocese where I live had a joint chapter meeting for all the chapters this morning that I attended.  At one point during the call they were discussing the latest stats and how it will impact doing live worship again.  They said that they're looking at both CDC and Iowa data.  They said the CDC data showed a higher positivity rate than what the data published by Iowa showed.  I wonder how many other people on that (about 140) said to themselves "gee I wonder fucking why" when that was mentioned.  I behaved myself and did not go off mute to say that either.

Some good news

Quote

The US Food and Drug Administration authorized Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine Saturday. It is the first single dose Covid-19 vaccine available in the US, and is one that "checks nearly all the boxes."

With more than 28.5 million confirmed Covid-19 cases and over 511,000 reported deaths in the US since the start of the pandemic, and while the demand for vaccine still far exceeds supply, these vaccines can't come soon enough.

"A third safe and effective vaccine is very welcome news," Andy Slavitt, the White House's senior for Covid Response, tweeted on Friday.

The vaccine, made by Janssen, J&J's vaccine arm, is safe and effective, and it's considered flexible. It's a single dose, and it doesn't require special storage.

My partner gets his first jab tomorrow. A good friend who was high risk got her second jab on Friday. My highest risk in-law got his second jab last week.  And I am in the tier that is opening up in Colorado on March 5 so I hope I can get my first jab soon.

Sooooooo I offended people.

I was giving a presentation for work and at the end said something along the lines of ‘hopefully as we move towards herd immunity with the vaccination program, our vision for (workplace name) will be able to move forward as planned’.

You guessed it. Anti vaxxers in the audience.

Oh freaking yay. Did they comment at the time or just go the whole passive-aggressive route?

I got the thin lip look and a quick exit with no acknowledgment. Pointed it out to a colleague and we ever-so-professionally waited until they were gone to declare that zero shits were given by either of us ?

The Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans urged Catholics on Friday against taking a vaccine for COVID-19 manufactured by Johnson & Johnson because the vaccine is developed from stem cells obtained from two abortions.

In a statement on the archdiocese's website, the organization argued that Johnson & Johnson's vaccine was "morally compromised."

"The archdiocese must instruct Catholics that the latest vaccine from Janssen/Johnson & Johnson is morally compromised as it uses the abortion-derived cell line in development and production of the vaccine as well as the testing," the statement read.

"We advise that if the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine is available, Catholics should choose to receive either of those vaccines rather than to receive the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine because of its extensive use of abortion-derived cell lines," the archdiocese continued.

Sigh.  Nothing like being a bunch of horses asses in the midst of a fucking pandemic.

First shot scheduled for this weekend.  I know that messes up Easter weekend but I will be fine. I'd rather have both before I visit my parents again.

Today I received the second vaccination.  Some kind of celebration will be held on March 16.  At three and a half hours my arm started getting sore this time.  I've iced it and exercised it as suggested, but it seems to be getting worse faster.  No signs of fever or chills though.  I could admit to the slight beginning of a headache.  The nurse told me to stay home and watch TV tomorrow.  ?

I’m so happy for everyone of you who has gotten the vaccine ❤️ It must be such a relief.

Switzerland has managed to botch the vaccine rollout and exactly no one is surprised ? They ordered the vaccines way too late and then came the expectable delivery delays. They do vaccinate but very slowly and I just hope I’ll be vaccinated by Fall.

I am apparently one of the people where the second dose is kicking my tushie.  Muscle pain, headache, chills, nausea, and inability to sleep.  I prepared for this with meals I can simply heat up and nothing scheduled for the rest of the week.  The nurse yesterday told me to just rest and watch TV today.  I think she was right.

My daughter said cheer up.  This way you know it's working.

@Coconut Flan Your daughter is right. Your immune system is reacting to the vaccine and producing nice antibodies. I hope you feel better quickly!

Nothing more pro-life than putting already-living people at risk of death to show your disapproval of the (legal) abortion of a couple fetuses 50 years ago!

I think my group might come up as early as March 24 - my job is technically one of the ancillary "essential" ones, plus I'm fat so should qualify as "high risk" due to that. I'm on a couple notification lists and really hope I can get the vaccine ASAP. Preferably Pfizer or Moderna just because they seem to have higher effectiveness rates, but I'll take whatever is available to me. Once I'm vaccinated I'll wait a week or two for immunity to develop and then I'm headed to the gym. With a mask on, and using sanitizer and all that, but still. It's been a YEAR.

Also as of today it's been a literal year since I've seen my friends in person. We are having a distanced, masked meetup in a couple weeks.

There was only ONE car waiting at the testing site I passed this morning! A few weeks ago it was 50+ every day.

My co-worker's mother (74, has COPD) just got her first shot yesterday. Slowly more and more people are getting their vaccines, and I'm thrilled about it.

So - they had two days of a state vaccination event over in Cooper County (Boonville, MO) at the Isle of Capri Casino.

They have left over vaccine that the health department is now doing an emergency clinic for because people pulled no shows.  Speculation/thought is that the no shows wanted the J&J one dose vax not the one they were giving.  This annoys me to no end.

91 year old friend with early to early mid-Alzheimers has decided she only wants one injection.  She doesn't have an appointment or the capability to make an appointment.  She'll get what one of her sons take her to get, but that's some entitlement isn't it for those people.

Every week California changes the rules, this week is no exception. Yesterday the ‘new’ vaccination strategy was announced - 40% of the vaccine supply was going to be allocated to 400 ‘special’ low income/hpi zip codes.  https://www.gov.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Equitable-Vaccine-Administration-Fact-Sheet.pdf Last week 10% was allocated to teachers. I’m waiting for more %s to be given to other special groups. Indeed, math is hard, the Governor will most likely keep on allocating %s until he’s given away 200% of the supply to special groups.
My county was already doing the zip code dance and basing priority on where you lived if you were 65+. Finally on 3/3 they opened up for 65+ in my zip code plus all ages in certain industries in all zip codes. Needless to say w/ the huge increase in eligibility there are no appointments to be had. Fear not, to make sure that only the ‘right’ people get appointments to be vaccinated there’s going to be super secret codes texted to use when signing up. Just being old and in the age group where 80-85% of the deaths have occurred isn’t good enough to get a secret code, though. The teachers and farm workers already have their super secret codes. My niece, a part time coach currently on maternity leave for several months has her secret code.

I was feeling a tad guilty for grabbing an appointment on CVS (who get their doses straight from the feds & follow the state’s guidelines) & getting my first shot on 3/1 - 2 days early according to my disapproving sister. California’s myturn said I was eligible based on my age and county - even though my county wouldn’t let me get a shot at one of their clinics until 3/3 because of my zip code. I put in my correct zip code when I registered for the shot, the pharmacy I got the shot at was in my zip code, so I’m not gonna feel guilty anymore because California keeps moving the goalposts. It’s totally random, unpredictable, yesterday’s rules and priorities are upended on a weekly basis. It’s a clusterfuck.

The difference between our state government vaccine rollout and the IHS partners is staggering. Southcentral Foundation, a part of CIRI, which is one of the Alaska Native Corporations helps managed the Alaska Native Medical Center. They have been leading the area in vaccine distribution and opened it up to everyone in the Anchorage community over 40 and all teachers. The State just opened to essential workers and 55+. But signing up my over 40 partner was simple and quick. Trying to navigate through the states garbage website has left me frustrated and willing to wait for the Johnson & Johnson. Not surprising at all, it's what the current (garbage) state administration wants. To destroy government and privatize everything, because they are terrible humans.

Italy has blocked export of the Oxford covid-19 vaccine to Australia. Unsurprisingly this will have some impact on our rollout, although CSL should have the same vaccine in production by the end of the month.  The rationale is that Italy has a huge number of cases and deaths, while Australia is largely covid-19-free at present. This is true, although the reasons we are have partly to due with geography and partly with a lot of border shut downs (both internal and external) which is unlikely to change any time soon until after the vaccine is widely available.

Anyway, the roll out has started, with publicity vaccinations in Murray Bridge (FFS seriously - I get including regional/remote areas, but could we start with where the high risk of transmission is, which is not a town of nearly 23,000 people 74km away from Adelaide in a state that has 8 active cases, all in hotel quarantine.)

I read "We hate you now", an article on the split between people who did the right thing, and those who kept on as if nothing had changed. I don't think the split is as bad here, but I'm curious if it rings true elsewhere.

Having been on the receiving end of it, the judgementalism around all of this is ridiculous.

My husband’s job is essential and can’t be done from home. He never had a single day off due to Covid. We have been ranted at by friends and relatives who have determined that by their expert judgement, his job is either not essential or can be done from home. (He is the manager of parts distribution for a company that provides equipment for agriculture and food production).

I am a sub teacher. My districts opened this fall fully in person. We rely on my income as well and once school opened I am not eligible for any unemployment. So I went back to work. Same people feel that we should go ahead and not eat so I can stay home.

My mother is legally blind. We have seen her regularly throughout. She needs regular help with some household tasks. Her vision has declined during this year and for several months, we couldn’t get into the occupational therapist who assesses her assistive technology needs. So I’ve had to handle financial matters and paperwork. Grocery delivery is cost prohibitive and frankly so overwhelmed in her city that getting it is difficult. So I have continued to see her every 1-2 weeks throughout. Friends, acquaintances and relatives have all had to say their piece about how we should not be there even to drop off stuff and bragged about how they’re so virtuous that they will never see their parents again of it comes to that.

No one is willing to consider that everyone’s situation is different. We’ve all had to do what we have to to survive and care for our family’s needs the best we can. This pandemic shaming culture that developed has been too black and white and, frankly, needs to stop.

I am very fortunate that my school district is holding vaccine clinics for employees.  Shot #1 will happen later today. Yes this means shot #2 will be Easter weekend but I will buy myself a bag of Cadbury eggs and eat them for brunch and dinner. Finally I will be able to see my parents...well once the orthopedic releases me to drive long distances.

Well if she has Alzheimer’s I’d be inclined to give your friend a pass.  Especially if she didn’t act this way before.

And once again ?s because people suck.

Disney World workers have allegedly experienced harassment, been spit on and been subject to degrading comments for enforcing COVID-19 safety guidelines the company has put in place amid the pandemic.

According to Orange County Sheriff's reports released by the Orlando Sun-Sentinel, employees from Disney's theme parks, hotel and Disney Springs have been subjects of challenges from guests who were asked to keep their masks on and social distance amid COVID-19.

In one instance, a man who was staying at one of Disney's hotels spat on a security guard after he was asked to put a mask on. The man was never identified or charged, according to the paper.

Another man, Stephen Johnson, drunkenly yelled at a firefighter who was helping his injured wife after the firefighter told him to put on a mask. Johnson threatened to kill the sheriff’s deputy and took the deputy’s gun off his belt, according to the Sentinel.
