Bakers to Alaska

Coconut Flan

Recommended Posts

The wife looks like she's about 15. So of course I went and read back in the discussion and found out she's 31. Okay, so she just looks super young. Then I was like, wait... she's 31. THIRTY ONE. She's one year older than me and she has ten kids?!

I think I just crossed my legs and felt my ovaries retract up into my shoulder blades.

I’m the same age as Esther Shrader and I’m pretty sure I can feel my ovaries in my throat when I think about having a gazillion children like her or JillRod, who is only a little bit older...

That woman holding the baby is the mother of all those kids?! Holyyyyyy crap. She does look 15!

It's the genes, man. The husband can hide his babyface with a beard, but he looks pretty damn young too.

I didn't notice the bit about one on the way, though it would just be a matter of time anyway. They must be planning an unassisted birth? I know someone who worked in one of those villages accessable only by plane. They sent pregnant moms to a birthing home in their 3rd trimester. There was no midwife or Dr available in the village and not practical (or safe) to wait until labor to fly someone in. Other option would be for Mom to fly to the lower 48 to deliver.

In theory, it's because the local heathens and polar bears need evangelising.

In practise, it's because land is extremely cheap and they can work on their fundie wet dream of homesteading without any bothersome government interfering and demanding they provide the basics for their children.

(Funny how fundies are all so anti socialism and anti government, unless it involves things like the Alaska Permanent Fund payments)

WTF we have hospitals in Alaska.

Most Fundies stick to certain areas with other Fundies, and AFAIK, Wainwright is not a hotbed for that activity, which makes me think they actually want to evangelize. If their kids go to public school, they will be able to go to Barrow/Utqiagvik (or however it's spelled now) for events. There is a hospital in Utqiagvik as well as restaurants and a college.

I was thinking she would  go home to family to stay and wait for labor and watch the younger kids.   Do they know people in Alaska to stay with?

They're in Palmer right now, which is one of those fundie hotbeds, so I wonder if they'll ever actually make it up north, or just decide to stay. They've been hanging out with the Hales, but I don't think they're staying with them.

This made me laugh. There are two bears at our local zoo, but they are not polar bears. Please tell me if brown bears and black bears need Jesus as well, thanks. I have not seen anybody attempting to evangelize them yet.

Seriously. There would be no reason for her to fly to the lower 48 to give birth.

Wait What? Ya’ll seriously don’t all live in Igloos  and have random Moose wandering through your towns? Get out!

I don't understand? If she's in Wainwright, she'll go into labor and either take the 14 minute flight to Utqiagvik (previously known as Barrow), or go to Fairbanks or Anchorage (it's a 3 hour flight from Utqiagvik to Anchorage, I've never been to Wainwright). Utqiagvik also will arrange travel to the hospital in the event of emergency, but I honestly don't know how billing works for non-native people/non-shareholders. Or deliver at home, I think ASRC provides mobile midwife service as well.

I do, actually have moose wandering through town.

IDK, Palmer seems pretty tame compared to Glennallan which was rather frightening. And Lake Clark School District didn't even attempt to pretend that they weren't in violation of church/state separations. So. Much. Maxwellian music.

To be fair, that can happen in the lower 48 too. A family friend totalled his car hitting a moose in Vermont (thankfully, he was fine). Moose just don't give a shit, no matter where they are.

Ah, good to know, thanks for the correction. Are they still closer to Alaska fundie central than they would be in the north, though?

Oh, I wasn't trying to correct you, I don't know, really. I know North Pole has some, I know they are in the Valley (which includes Palmer) but I think they tend to live in the outskirts. Valdez, too. And possibly Bethel, but I only know of Jesuit and Mormon missions. Alaska is huge, it's remote, and it's diverse. And for some reason, people like to come "help," by bringing God and not much else.

It's hard for non Natives to live in Native communities like Wainwright. It's hard for anyone, but Native folk have the advantage of family and history and native corporations. Granted, I haven't been to Wainwright, but Utqiagvik is harsh. I doubt Wainwright has flush toilets outside of the school,it's below freezing for more than half the year. In January and February, I had to wake up every few hours to make sure the pipes didn't freeze, and that my car battery was running. We left all vehicles unlocked in case someone needs to jump in if they see a bear. And since there are no roads in or out, it doesn't matter.

Everyone's relationship is important and it's hard for outsiders.

11 kids. She’s pregnant again. She is only 31 and has a little over 10 years of fertility left. She could easily beat Michelle Duggar and Kelly Bates. I could see her having over 20 kids very easily. I have mutual Facebook friends with her.

I just read Pilgrim’s Wilderness, by Tom Kizzia about the Hales. It was quite fascinating. It does contain vivid accounts of incest (over 18) and child abuse.

Yeah, moose do wander randomly through town. Across highways. In your garden. On your front steps to eat your jack-o-lanterns. (That was a fright to wake up to, let me tell you!)

I’ve  never really considered Palmer a fundie hot bed lol, but it gives me a lovely laugh....”we’ve now entered a hotbed of fundie....turpentine!” :laughing-jumpingpurple:

Okay, sorry, that makes more sense. But flying out of state gets really pricey.

Ok, sorry. The people I know who lived in fly in villages must have been more remote. The ones I mentioned already did not have regular access to a plane. It flew in and out once a week with mail and groceries. Any additional flights had to be arranged ahead of time. Which is why all the pregnant local women went to a maternal house in a different village with access to the hospital. They did have a midwife come in monthly for prenatal visits, but not for deliveries. My friend flew home with her younger children to stay with her parents when she was due, then went back to the village when the baby was a month old.

My guess is that they think it is a wilderness and a bunch of "uncivilized" people who have no contact with the outer world.  I've seen that in people that do mission trips to parts of the world like Africa.  They want to "save" them.

We don't have moose in NE OK. But we do get the occasional mountain lion as it wanders through! I've never seen them, but they have been spotted in the area.  We do get deer in this area.

I know someone who had to do that. She lived in Larsen Bay on Kodiak and her OB and the hospital were in Kodiak. She flew back and forth for her prenatal appointments, then went to stay with friends in town a couple weeks before her due date.

I am a Facebook friend of hers. We have mutual friends. She has 11 kids and is only 31, with the first born at 20 and none of them are twins.   I think she has been offered a reality TV show but turned it down. She is actually very funny, kind, and is quite pretty but has a baby face and looks no older than 18. She says she gets funny looks when out with her kids because of how people think she is still a teenager. She’s a second generation fundie from a family of 9 kids but her husband was only one of 3. I definitely see her having at least 20+ children. She will beat the Bates and Duggars.

Since Bakers to Alaska is public, I’ll share her public photo.
