JEMISON, Ala. (WIAT) – What started out as an overgrown gully behind the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church has turned into a ministry, complete with guns, bullets and the Bible. so jesus would be fine using guns to promote his message?

Pastor Phillip Guin says the gully, once full of kudzu, snakes and other vermin, had been there since before he arrived at the church. Much of the dirt used as fill was from a recent expansion.

When brainstorming about what to do with the area, the idea of a gun range came up.

“We had quite a number of church members, some elderly ladies, for example, and some not so elderly women that had purchased guns, but didn’t know how to use them,†Guin said.

Originally, the range was used to teach firearm safety. But about a year ago, that changed. The thought of a ministry started becoming more and more clear.

Guin says there are many in the congregation who either hunt or are gun enthusiasts. The safety training morphed into the Rocky Mount Hunt and Gun Club as a way to try and bring more members to the church.

The was a Southern Baptist church about half a mile from my house growing up. They had a bit of a gully behind their church, too. They dealt with theirs differently: they had an outdoor baptismal pool behind the church. That's a much better answer than a gun range.

It's cool they know their community. I don't see how this is any different than the churches who go out and recruit young people by using fun music or the churches that have installed soccer fields or buy lake front property to have "retreats" that consist of what some may call vacation activities.

Nothing says Jesus like handguns and hollow points...

I do get the thought of knowing what would be a draw in the community and making it work for you. I just find it easier, personally, to reconcile sports, music, picnics and hayrides with a house of worship than a gun range.

If they're going to do it I hope they at least offer a few free gun safety workshops so their church doesn't have any sad stories like that poor idiot who shot his wife while they were playing cops and robbers in the house.
