The Lock In - a Christian horror film

thoughtful

Recommended Posts

Just in time for Halloween -- well, it actually came out last January, but I didn't see any discussion of it here, so . . .

A teen sneaks a dirty magazine into a church overnight lock-in, and the demon spirit of pornography creates an alternate universe in which kids disappear or throw themselves into the baptismal font, and drawers don't open. And they mean this all very seriously, as a warning against demonic porno.

I kid you not.

More of it is shown here, accompanied by a sarcastic narration which I find annoying, but it does let you see more of the film itself:

LOL That's awesome.

Lock-ins always freaked me out as a little kid.

My closest sisters and i were in AOG girls' groups that used to do Rock-a-Thons where all the kids in Daisies, Stars, Gems, etc. had to get sponsors and rock the night away in rocking chairs in a darkened fellowship hall, watching movies all night long. (pre-fundie years)

The spooky dark foyer, the empty sanctuary, squeaking bathroom doors and empty bathroom stalls. Total horror film gold. i couldn't watch the previews for the movie, though.

ok i watched the previews, it was way less scary than i imagined. Actually hilariously pathetic. :D This isn't done by the same youth group that did the tacky orientation video is it? The one with the girl getting hit with a baseball bat for not throwing away trash? Looked about the same.

My parents made me go to a lock-in that was a Left Behind movie marathon... and it was a lot scarier than this sounds.

The trailer made me laugh so hard. Most of those kids look related. Was this film made by one family? Probably. At least they finished their movie, ARNDTS.

Has any teen in the last decade used the word "dirty mag"?

I wasn't allowed to go to lock-ins. Though I was allowed at a late night youth event where they turned off all the lights in the old part of the church that had all the windows boarded up and we played this game where one group of teens were soldiers, some other groups were helpers that would take you to "safe houses" and then another group were Christians trying to escape persecution. The Christians had to navigate through all the "safe houses" and escape the building without being caught by a soldier and do it all in the pitch black. It was one of the more fun things I did at church. I sadly was caught and killed for my faith.

Wait -- there's another one!

When I found The Lock In last night, it was due to a google search for a Christian "found footage" horror film about pornography. I'd had @midnight on, and was only half paying attention to it. They had a gag about such a film, but I didn't hear the title, and The Lock In was all that came up in the search.

I looked at the video of @midnight online today, and found out it was this one! Yes, there are two such films! In this one, porn takes over a family, and it's . . . dun dun dun . . . A Generational Curse!

Here's the trailer for the one they were talking about, Harmless:

Here's the @midnight episode, which is not one of their funnier ones, but Ari Shaffir's line from this segment is a fun reference, and the episode does include a picture that might be familiar to FJers -- the bacon bra!

we did something similar at one of my churches for a lock-in. although it was more extreme hide-n-seek, and if we were found we were put in prison for a certain amount of time and then let back out. there were designated people that i guess were supposed to be preachers or something and we had to find them before the soldiers.

we knew one was in the dark auditorium, but we also knew that there were a few soldiers lurking in there, so i went in as a distraction to draw them out. worked like a charm. and i didn't even get caught! at that time, at least, i was later caught hiding under stairs.

We just played a lot of Sardines, and watched movies. But, being a liberal church, we got to watch anything less than an R rating.

There's another movie coming out about being hunted by demons or something during the rapture. I don't think it's biblically based... Can't remember the name. Saw the trailer during The Maze Runner.

Ok I googled and they say it will be "biblically accurate" (yeah, the PP will differ with you, you pre trib heretic) but its not a Christian movie.

Our lock in were awesome. We rented a community center about 1.5 hours away. It had an Olympic size swimming pool, a bowling alley, tons of other stuff too. They also bought lots of pizza and junk food that was available all night.

I never went to a lock in. The Catholic parish my family attended hosted them, but I never went as a teenager because I wasn't in the youth group. My two older brothers and sister went to them. They said the lock ins started with a decade of the rosary and then a few Bible verses and then different activities like games/icebreakers. My sister said at one of the lock ins, they did vision board projects and they made crafts. I had friends in other religious denominations who went to lock ins. They mentioned movies, games, and bible study at their lock ins. One of my friends went to a mother/daughter lock in.

We had multi-church lockins. Boys and girls would start out at the same church for games, dinner and worship. Then the boys was move to a different church to spend the night. I look back now and realize that we didn't do anything that was really that fun- but just a break from my usual routine was so exciting.

It was a chance to socialize with other girls and have a fun time. I got to meet girls from other churches and had several pen pals who I would see at lock ins and summer camp.

We were always given a strict list of things not to bring which included magazines, walkmans, tapes of Non-Christian music, etc.

We did a lock-in once when I was in campus ministry in a liberal church. There were a lot of "team-building" and trust activities where someone is blindfolded and led around, etc. We prayed and listen to and sang gospel music. Party hardy. It might have been more fun if someone got possessed by porn.

I kind of want to see these full-length films now, not just the trailers. "Gee, Billy. A dirty mag? I don't know. Pastor Bob says Satan lives in the bosoms of harlots."

me too, kind of like the b-grade horror movie marathons that used to be featured on the sci-fi channel before they changed to syfy.

OMG! How awesome would this movie be if the MST 3000 guys got hold of it.

I have no words for that trailer

I only ever went to one lock in with a friend's church, and it was actually a lot of fun. They rented out an indoor play place at the local mall. It had slides, tubes you could crawl through, a ball pit, that sort of thing. They also played movies, and there was a separate semi-dark room you could sleep in if you brought a sleeping bag. I got huffy about something one of my friends did and hid in the far reaches of the tunnels, and everyone was mad at me because they wouldn't serve the pizza until I showed up and everyone was present so they could say grace  It was the first time I stayed up all night too. Of course if it had been at a church, it probably would've been more creepy and much less fun.

Every time I see the title of this thread, I can't help but think of L. Ron Cupboard locking his wife in the cabin/shed. :?

Drawers won't open? **faints** There must be dirty mags in my house! A drawer on hubs bedside table won't open! Maybe I should call CSI to check for KY residual. And that might explain why my washer keeps getting unlevel on the spin cycle and shrieks like a spirit of the Damned! Or, it could be just because daughter in law washes the queen sized comforter in there.

I once overheard people talking about how much fun their kids were going to have at the lock in at church. I was so fucking horrified, not because lock ins or church, but because this particular lock in was at the church where the pastor is a convicted murderer (no, not kidding. I've mentioned this here before, but if you haven't seen it: http://www.nashvillescene.com/nashville ... id=1201523 ).

That's about the last place I'd send my kid, but I wouldn't ever attend that church (we call it The Murder Church) anyway.

Locking kids in a building at night with a convicted killer would make a better horror plot than the dirty mag one.

A convicted murderer?! Why was he out of jail, let alone still allowed to be a pastor?
