Gift-Giving Gone Very, Very Wrong

Not exactly a hobby, but falls neatly into "Shit I Fucked Up". Roommate 1 and I put together a package for Roommate 2's birthday. Roommate 2 is basically Sheldon Cooper when it comes to sexuality - like, she doesn't understand why people find other people attractive. She's not exactly prudish - it's just not on her radar. (Yes, this is relevant.)

 

After we graduate, she has decided to go travelling around Europe for a while, so we decided to put together a whole bunch of items that might be useful travelling. Universal plug adapter, cute luggage tag, ring that doubles as a bottle opener - things like that. While shopping in a kitsch store one day, I saw what looked like a perfectly normal deck of cards for sale and thought "Throw it in, she can play with them in a hostel or something". It looked normal. I swear this cross my heart and hope to die Girl Guide's honour. It...looked...NORMAL.

 

So the big night was tonight. Roommate 2 was very touched, thanked us profusely, exclaimed over how useful everything would be. And then she suggested we play a card game. She opened the deck...

 

...and it was porno. Filthy, filthy porno. Like, this stuff wouldn't be sold in gas stations, let's put it that way. Each card was more horrifying than the last one. Roommate 2 just about died, Roommate 1 had to leave the room because she was crying from laughter, I was apologizing and explaining that I TOTALLY didn't know, I SWEAR!

 

I suggested that she could take it with her to Amsterdam.

 

She looked at me like I had three heads.

I'm dying of laughter! Aw, it was a thoughtful gift.

A few years ago I wrapped a last-minute white elephant gift in one of the free newspapers that I grab to line my bird's cage. The person that picked my gift exclaimed, "I'll take the one wrapped in porn!" It turned out that I grabbed the classifieds section.

She did make sure to take them with her when we moved out...and the story's been trotted out at every party since, so I suspect that is the reason why.
