They want to stop their children and themselves from thinking, and isn't that really the point of imaginative books? I am not a huge Twilight fan but it was not a horrible read and not something I would be concerned about my daughters reading. Because if you can imagine someone who lives on blood as a somewhat good and morally complex person, your mind has grown a little. Ditto with other unusual and/or supernatural books. Harry Potter is about an entirely different world but you can see good, evil, and in between. You can step outside of the paradigm and see good and evil as something separate from societal mores. And that thinking is what takes you away from fundamentalism.
