Bates Gypsy camp seriously?

I've heard it's supposed to be derogatory, but I always just hear it as being shorthand for someone who travels--Roma being the specific ethnic subgroup of people who travel.

(although, tone says a lot. we were called gypsies when I was a kid [traveling cross-country in an RV--no, we don't look Roma] and often it was a good-natured way of referring to travelers. Other times, it was clearly meant to imply that 'overnighters' [us--only staying 1 night in a location] were unwashed thieves who they wouldn't let their children play with.)
