Saryniti on Toddlers & Tiaras

So the "mom" (in quotes because she married into the family only months ago) Ca'Trina had a vision from god that she would marry into a family with a 5 year old daughter so she could put her in pageants. Sure enough, she meets her now husband - who looks like a real winner- who has a 5 year old daughter. Seeing this as a sure sign she marries him and promptly begins getting Sarynity (pronounce serenity because spelling it different makes her kool) ready for a GLITZ pageant.

BUt, of course, being a bible believing christian mother, she has to pray about absolutely everying. She puts this little kid in a dress and then has to ask the "head of the household" if its too immodest (because her shoulders are showing). He couldnt give a shit and says its fine. There are various scenes showing them praying about this or that - and they did do a good thing in having her make goodie bags for all the kids, win or lose.

Mom and a friend show up (without a brush or rollers) but with T-shirts that say "pentecostal beauty" and try and get this poor kid in, but she's just not on par. The poor little kid cries when she's not called and it wasnt her age group... but she gets a crown in the end so she's happy... and gives out candy...

I'm totally baffled by this woman. I cant stand pageants for little kids for so many reasons, but this one really takes the cake. You want your daughter to me modest and faithful, but YOU want her to also prance around and be judged solely on how she looks. You encourage her to wear clothes and makeup WAY above the age-appropriate range (and lets not leave out that this was a HALLOWEEN pageant so YAY DEBIL!) and stand up to be judged. Then you pray about it so its ok. In the end its still all about winners and losers and superficial bullshit.

I believe in G-d and prayer, but the idea of G-d as a micromanager is so strange to me. It's like in Jesus Camp, when Becky blesses each chair and the sound system. If you pray with equal intensity to both cure someone's cancer AND find the perfect parking space, doesn't that diminish the power of it? It just looked exhausting, and it showed when Saryniti bawled hysterically when her name wasn't called, even though it wasn't her age group yet.

She's still a kid and kids like to win, JOY or otherwise. No one likes putting themselves out there and losing. If she wants to put her kid in a pageant, just say so. To say youre doing it to honor god or because god wants you to is ridiculous.

I was so glad to see that woman on this episode, because a friend of mine was also on it, and you never want your friend to be the featured crazy.

:laughing-rollingyellow:

Does she atleast recognize that she was very lucky?!

No, I don't think this is inconsistent at all. Fundies are the most judgmental group, so of course they'll support something where girls are judged on their looks. What else are girls good for, in their worldview? Her only jobs are to please her future husband, and to advertise her religion. Pageants are a great way to do both of these things. If her whole life will revolve around being a good wife, she might as well start practicing how to look good now. I think most pageant participants lean to the religious conservative side. Whether you're judging a woman as slutty for wearing immodest clothes, or judging her as an ugly hag for wearing clothes that are too modest, the judging is still basically the same process.

And I can't really give them credit for giving out the goodie bags, since they most likely did it as a way to convert others, and not out of any genuine caring about the people they gave them to. Don't get me started on this type of faux charity. It's all for show and it's one of the big reasons I left my church in the first place.

Perhaps a business idea... christian pageants. There can be a beauty, talent, and household section. The talent section will be defined as quoting bible, playing an instrument, or singing a jesus related song. For the household section they can cook a dish for the judges, show off laundry folding skills, get a stain out of a bathtub, or change a diaper (even if its their own!)

Overwhelmingly I started to feel more and more like she was following the religion so far as it didn't interfere with what she really wanted to do.

And then throw a couple of "please Jesus" and "thank you Jesus" in there to keep it holy.

I was thinking about how ridiculous it was getting when she said she had spent something like 3 hours praying over whether to get the girl a spray tan. But, in the end, she seems like a sweet mom and seems to love the daughter a lot. And I'm not pro-pageants, but she seemed to have a nice bond with the duaghter. My boyfriend was watching with me and was cracking up and was saying what a winner the dad looked like- and that Ca'Trina must have only married him for the adorable kid.

The step-mother kept saying things like "we worshiped on it" which I thought was just odd. I get praying on something (I mean, it might be in poor taste to pray on certain things, but at least it makes sense - you're asking god for an answer, an outcome, etc.) Worshiping, though... maybe I'm just an ignorant atheist but that word... I do not think it means what you think it means.

Every time I see the name Saryniti, I think it's pronounced "Sarah-nee-tee," to rhyme with the wine Riunite, and I think of this commercial from my childhood:

I tried to look up this name on Google videos and they autocorrected to "Knights who say 'Ni'". That is all.

I didn't watch this as I'm always forgetting to watch tv. But I have a question, where is the bio mom? Wouldn't she have a huge say if her daughter could be in pageants at all? If mom was able to have say and said no, would this woman have looked else where for another victim daughter? I am really surprised by this woman and can not believe that she is so,... so... crazy. Why didn't she want to have her own baby to raise for pagentry? Why someone elses?

Haha! I'm glad someone posted on this. I was thinking of it but never got around to it. The best part of this entire episode was seeing a grown man in a batman costume. You know he's probably gay and since there isn't any real theatre in that town he's settled for pageants hoping one day he will get discovered.

I like the emcee's color descriptions of the dresses. Either the tape needed some serious color correcting or he should not quit is day job to become an interior designer.

RE: The biological mom

They explained it that she married a "single father."

The emcees of ALL these things, male or female, completely freak me out. What kind of adult wants to hang out with unrelated little kids and watch them dance around half naked? I sort of get the parents who enter their kids (can we say living vicarously?) but the emcee/host? Ugh

The mom totally squicked me out. First off, the random apostrophe is always the fist sign of a wing nut. A well grounded adult would have had that left off. She's very "religious" but hot catch of a daddy couldnt care less. She wasnt knocked up when they got together, so why the rush to get married? He didnt come to the pageant, unlike some of the other unwilling dads who atleast go to support their kids/wives.

As for the bio mom, I'm guessing shes either dead or in prison. Saryniti called Ca'Trina "mom" - which no real mom would allow if they were involved in the kids life.

Looking through the YouTube comments, I saw this:

Serenity's mom is AWSOME!!!!!!!!! FINALLY a pageant mom with a concience and morals!!!!!! -applaud-

mrsbrowne2013 8 hours ago 2

Is this our very own Mrs.B? I bet she found the link from here lol. Yes, it's fine to pimp out someone else's child as long as you give Jesus the credit.

It looked like Saryniti and her stepmom were both modesty-junkie/long-skirt-wearers. Yet they do pageants?

As someone who has an apostrophe in their name I object the claim that it is the first sign of a wing nut :naughty: ! I certainly am not a wing-nut because I choose to continue to include a character in my name that my parents gave to me--much like people whose names have accents aren't crazy for continuing to use them. You never know why the apostrophe is there. Ca'Trina could be like me, whose name is a combination of my grandparent's names--the apostrophe separating the two halves. The decision to do that was certainly NOT random.

As for the dad, maybe he had to work. We didn't see Chloe's father at the pageant. To be quite honest, I was pretty surprised at the small crowd that was there (notwithstanding Saryniti's comment that there were so many people that made her nervous to perform).

Off topic but little Chloe looks a clone to my youngest son's girlfriend! They are the same even and seem to be the same type of wild child. My youngest even asked if it was JC, his girlfriend. Wow, I'm going to have let JC's mom see this one and see if she sees it. The only diofference I could see was eye color, Chloe's are brown and JC's are blue.

I can't see any Christian mom wanting her daughter to be involved in these kiddie "PORN" pagnents. Those poor little girls are so over sexaulized.
