  • Coconut Flan changed the title to Mortons 5: Terrible News from the Smith Home: Sitara Killed while Helping Bret Cut Down a Tree

Jacqueline posted about the memorial service. I really generally feel bad for the siblings. And I hope that the police investigate this negligence.

There's something even more senseless about a child dying in these circumstances. She was 17. She should be preparing for 11th grade to start next week, and the dreams that come with being so very close to adulthood.

Instead, she was adopted from one broken family into another, raised in a viciously ignorant cult by pedophile apologists, and denied even the sham of "adulthood" granted to a Fundy daughter. She died because Craptain Bret didn't want to pay for a tree cutting service. Because her life and all of the vitality and independent hopes she may have had were less important to her "father" than the convenience of using her to back him up in a dangerous home improvement project that he had no right to involve her in.

The church memoriam was almost right. The smiths didn't "lose" the life of their daughter. They squandered it.

Jeeze-this poor girl's death is killing me. I seriously choked up reading the end of your post. Squandered, indeed. They didn't value her enough to protect her; to keep her out of and away from labor she has no skill or experience in.

No doubt Craptain Bret has protected her virginity; guarded her heart & kept it safe til someone stupid enough to go through his rituals came along wanting her as a helpmeet. But her life? Meh, she's cheap labor. Now, no bride price for handing over his daughter & her only worth-a (presumed) in tact hymen to the higest bidder.

RIP Sitara. For your sake I really do want to be wrong about the heaven thing. I want you to be in an emotionally & physically pain free place with nothing but love, warm hugs from loving arms, sweet, soft kisses on your head from an adoring mouth with only sweet words and surrounded by adoration & wonderment over the prescious, wonderful, most important & special person that is you.

I‘m heartbroken. That poor poor girl.

The Captain and Jackie are beyond disgusting and I really hope they‘ll face some kind of consequences for their actions!

I‘m also quite irritated that Kressant is back at posting her usual everyday life posts on IG. I know that grief is an individual process, but this just seems odd to me.

What a senseless death. We see fundies using their minor children for construction work constantly like it is not big deal and i dont think it is mentioned enough how dangerous it can be. Gil Bates has been using his minor sons as labor in the tree cutting bussiness for years.

It seems Sitara birthday was in june, so she was already 18, but i dont think it makes a diference in the negligence, she was still a child.

Thanks. I was trying to figure out if she had turned 18 yet. I’m guessing this was going to be her senior year at school since they never mentioned graduation. I remember a post a long time ago from Jackie. She talked about having a hard time with Sitara when she was like 13. I just figure they broke her somehow. Her smile never reached her eyes.

Kressent has always struck me as cold; heartless; completely void of emotion. She is entirely wrapped in her religion and she eats, sleeps & breaths it. The only things she's ever shown any kind of passion for are things other people do. She's a tRumper through and through; pretty sure she finally found her "place" when he came along. Everyone else is a communist, or socialist and she knows all about them because her dad told her and you are stupid to not see it. She's anti vax & anti mask, but doesn't seem as passionate; she just follows the crowd on that one, posting what the Mortons back in Georgia posted. She was actually one of the first I stopped following because she just regurgitated what others had shared. She's very shallow and doesn't try to think too much. it probably hurts.

Plus, she takes her kids to construction sites without shoes on- she clearly sees nothing wrong with what happened. Her god wanted Sitara in heaven and that's that. No use wasting a tear over her god's will.

I fully admit I could be off base about her, this is just the impression I've always gotten from her. And because of it, I am not surprised at all that she's gone on her merry way when her little sister died doing labor for her father.

I’ve always thought she just wasn’t bright at all. And I hate how she lets her children “play” in dangerous situations. To be honest, if you asked me which fundie in the Morton Smith families would have a child die by negligent accident, I would have said Kress, not Craptain.

Oh, she's definitely not bright. That's a large part of what makes her so infuriating. She takes what other people say/tell her and screams it like she knows what she's talking about. But, she couldn't discuss her way out of a mouse trap. There is nothing to back up anything she says. It's just what she's told.

It's why she's shallow (in my opinion, of course). She is incapable of depth because she doesn't think or reason or process; she parrots.

I can't pretend to have any insight into Kressant's emotional state (and frankly it makes me uncomfortable to judge a person's reaction to tragedy). But I would totally put money on seeing more pics of her small kids running barefoot through construction sites within the week.

After I read Tara Westover's 'Educated' I saw an interview somewhere with a few of her other siblings, and it was just stunning how blase they were about the dangerous conditions described in the book. "Sure we had broken bones and third-degree burns, but that's just part of life, were we supposed to stay inside all the time?" etc. I'm sure that's the attitude we'll see from the Mortons. These things happen, no way to prevent it, can't spend your life worrying.

I agree that Kressant likely has that way of thinking. I have a lot of people in my extended family that live on farms. Yes, they do things some people may be uncomfortable with but they actually take safety precautions. They would never use a teen girl with no tree experience to help with falling a tree. Sure kids help on the farm all the time. But with appropriate tasks and chores.

That picture of the roof and the tree looked like an accident waiting to happen.

RIP Sitara.

I get the DIY ethic. My late FIL was an archetypical DIY-er but I never, ever saw him do something without taking safety precautions, whether it was protective gear or ensuring that all equipment was in working order and correctly placed for safe use. That also included maintaining his working gear & spaces. While he welcomed the "assistance" of his grandchildren when doing things around the house, he NEVER put them in danger and certainly never involved them in tasks that were clearly beyond their capabilities.

I also used to wonder how Kressant et al could let their kids "work" on the new house or play in deep, open pits with sidewalls of loose dirt. With Sitara's death, sadly, it's obvious that she was raised by parents with equally poor or worse judgement. This also makes me wonder how she could possibly home school anyone.

Arman posted a description of the event schedule for Sitara's memorial service. It's to be at their church on Saturday, with a "visitation to follow with the Smith family at the house".

I get that it's tradition to host a visitation at the home of the deceased, but... holy hell it seems tasteless and needlessly macabre to host a visitation at the house where she was horrifically and mortally injured just a few days ago. The tree is almost certainly still there. Maybe I'm pearl clutching, but I would host the damned visitation literally ANYWHERE else.

I'm just wondering how anyone will fit in that cluttered house.

Bret Smith will officiate. He has the gall to preside over the funeral service for a child he killed through neglect and aggressive pomposity. He was sure he knew better. Why oh why couldn’t his horrible decisions have killed him instead.

"Reverend" Bret Smith will officiate? He can't even get his head out of his ego filled ass for his own adopted daughter's funeral.

What is he going to say? How the fuck is he going to religious-ify his role in her death?

Seriously, this has me shaking with anger. He is such a horrible excuse for a human being and he's going to make the funeral of the adopted daughter his negligence killed all about him and his god.

Did you notice how Sitara was the daughter of Bret (Jacqueline) Smith? She wasn't Jacquie's fucking mother in law where you list a spouse in parenthesis, she was her damn mother, yet she's relegated to a side note after the great and mighty Bret. What disgusting turd wrote that? Never mind, I'd bet my life it was Bret himself.

And is it just me or is it beyond morbid to "plant a tree" in her name? WTF? Of course they tell you where to buy flowers to send to them; no "in lieu of flowers" for the Smiths; they want it all because it's all about them.

And really, how the hell will anyone fit in that house?

I hate Bret & Jacqueline Smith more each day and am not ashamed to admit it. I refrain from "hate" as much as I can because to me it's very strong, but I fucking HATE them.

**I read another posting of the obituary and in it they say in lieu of flowers send donations to the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry in Atlanta, where apparently Sitara wanted to attend. So I scale back my disgust on that part, although only partly.

That obituary says absolutely nothing of her personality. It’s like they don’t even know her. They disgust me more and more by the minute.

"School of Supernatural Ministry"?!

Yeah, this is part of its schpeel.

We want to run with people like you

At the Bethel Atlanta School of Supernatural Ministry we will equip you to live a thriving life in Christ that releases the transformational power of God through everything you do and wherever you go.
As a BASSM student you will discover who God is to you, who you are to God, and who you are to the world. You will be trained in the gifts of the spirit, discover your God given destiny, and be equipped to impact the world with the power of His Kingdom.

Here's a link. It looks to me like an indoctrination program, but what do I know, I don't have any gifts of the spirit.

It's part of a "chain" - around the country. Buzzfeed didn't like them much four years ago.

Thank you! I always forget they're Charismatic and into the Woo. They're a particularly odd corner of Fundie life.
