I just read a well-written and insightful article in which a formerly quiverfull woman details what it was like for her to grow up in that cult and how her upbringing was similar to The Handmaid's Tale.

I am SO sick of this shit.

The author of this story (not trying to minimize her pain) got to drink coffee.  As a SDA I wasn't allowed even this simple pleasure.  

When my mother was in the ICU in her last days in an Adventist hospital I went to the cafeteria in search of a diet coke.  They only had the caffeine-free version.  It seems like a small thing and it was, but at the time it felt like a slap in the face.  Does anyone remember the Suicidal Tendencies' song  "all I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me."?  It was like that.   

These modern fundies seem to pick and choose whatever old testament rules they can live with and they make them into religious law, and they discard the others.  And whoever does the choosing turns out to be male in most cases...
