And this is what scares me... Anti-Abortion Extremists

I completely understand your fear FIC, and I hope that both your mother and all of the other people associated with the clinic stay safe. I just wanted to say that for safety's sake, you may want to go back and edit out some of the details about the clinic's history and how many clinics there are etc from your posts. I think you have enough in there for most people to figure out which clinic you are referring to, and someone more savvy than me to possibly figure out who your mother is. While I am not really a prayer type of person, I will keep them in my thoughts today.

That's awful and stuff like this is why I have little tolerance for anti choice people. I understand your worry for your mom, they seem like they are getting bolder in their terrorism. But I do think she'll be fine.

And while treating an ectopic pregnancy is not an abortion, religiously affiliated will not always treat them to the best of the their abilities

I've only had experience at 2 Catholic hospitals, both of which treat ectopic pregnancy as a surgical emergency.

Interestingly I saw a documentary a few years ago about a woman in England who delivered twins, and then a 3rd baby was found totally outside the uterus, its placenta was attached to the bladder and outside of the uterus.

And there was another documentary about a Russian woman who was found to have a long dead baby inside her uterus.

I saw that documentary about the women who had the dead fetus inside for years, but I could have sworn she was Indian.

And I'm sure not all hospitals have the restrictions, but the fact even some do worries me.

Didn't a nun get excommunicated not too long ago for okaying a life saving abortion? I believe we discussed it but I can't recall which thread it was.

Yes, a nun in Arizona was excommunicated for okaying a medically necessary abortion. Then there was the case in Brasil where a nine year old girl's mom and the girl's doctors were excommunicated when the girl was pregnant with twins and had an abortion. The pregnancy threatened the girl's life if carried to term. Now how on earth did a 9 year old girl get pregnant? Her stepfather raped her. Was he excommunicated? Nope.

I think there was a woman in India with a similar story. Time for google. OK, here it is:

I think I'm going to have nightmares about that fetus.

FireIsCatching, I don't blame you for being concerned. The church where Dr Tiller was shot is 10 minutes from my parent's house. I believe some people can and will do anything their crazy ideology tells them to. The whole protesting schools thing is terrifying; that's mafia tactics. Better not keep renting that land, or we'll do something to your kids... Like something out of a comic book, even.

So, now they're taking a page from the play book of animal rights nuts? (Note: If you're involved in animal rights and not a nut, you're not included in that description). I suspect it will work about as well for pro-lifers as it does for animal rights types. It just shows people how extreme they are.

This is relevant to my interests ;)

Tertiary terror is actually rather effective and the goal is not "make people agree with you" but "make people so scared they stop doing what they are doing or don't start in the first place". There are other parts of the AR (animal rights) movement to do the nicey nicey bit, just as antiabortion activists have "think of the sweet baybees" types and praying nuns as well as abortion clinic bombers. One goal, multiple tactics.

Indeed, some AR have praised extreme antiabortionists for their use of intimidation and even violence...google Dr Jerry Vlasak, he's an interesting guy.

(I am not AR but I used to work in a place targeted by them. We had serious security and the worst we ever had was death threats to my boss and "intriguing" parcels, but it gave me a strong interest in the movement.)

As someone who is pro-life this type of activity hurts far more than it helps. Why would you protest at a middle school? Abortion providers' homes and families should be strictly off limits.

I was involved in an estrogen study for a few years and the doctor doing the study was Dr. Mildred Hanson, who is also an abortion provider in MN and she was the only doctor doing abortions in SD. She traveled there a few times a month. During the years I saw her she always wore a bullet proof vest. Her office mail had to be screened for bombs. I felt bad for her and her staff. She was a practicing Lutheran and felt abortion was OK.

As for murdering providers it's absurd to think that is right. Murder is murder.

Nell

I was an escort at Dr Hanson's clinic when I lived in the Twin Cities area.

It's absurd to me that someone providing legal medical care has to live in fear like that. FIC89 and demgirl, please thank your moms for me.

Yep, this is the fucked up state of women's health and well-being in the Catholic church. I avoid Catholic hospitals for my healthcare.

I know we have liberal, pro-choice Catholics here that don't agree with this kind of crap, but I could never be Catholic because of it. Not that they would want my divorced, bisexual, feminist self in the first place.

This situation is so hard for me to imagine. I'm used to the secular public hospital network of France and most private clinics definitely do not display any sign of religion. No crosses or nuns running about.

The centres of Planning Familial are usually as cosy as their tiny budget allows them. If you go in for an abortion using the abortion pill, they make sure you're set up in a room with cookies, a pot of tea and an electric kettle to make some more, books, magazines, a CD player (they ask you to bring some music in to make yourself comfortable) and someone just footsteps away, on the other side of the door, if you need them. There is never anyone protesting outside them (except the once a year event staged by some tiny über-Catholic group who march in front of one and they get escorted away by police because of the moral prejudice they could bring to the people (yes, not just girls! Boys and men are more than welcome to accompany their partner whether it's for a pill prescription or abortion procedure). And if you came alone, they try to help you out as much as possible, including have a volunteer help you go home.

I would be so angry if people protested in front of these places (which are usually very anonymous, set in normal typical old apartments in buildings where normal people live too, just to morph the structure as much as possible into the "normal" ways of life, as part of the urban and human décor of all) and threatened to take violent action against those working there. I have a lump in my throat just thinking about it.

No, you can have abortions performed at other locations besides an abortion clinic. Actually, I think there are very few locations that only perform abortions and don't offer any other services. There's no particular reason to go to PP unless you don't have a primary physician, or just prefer it for some other reason.

Whether or not you can receive an abortion at your regular clinic most likely depends on your location and the preferences of your doctors. In states where abortion is highly restricted, you will probably be referred elsewhere. IIRC, Kansas and a few other states only have a couple of clinics in them that will perform abortions. In NC, they will not perform them past 20 weeks for any reason, so if you need a late-term abortion you will be referred to another state (Atlanta is the closest place to go).

Not every PP actually offers abortions. The one near where I live only does birth control/pregnancy tests and preventative care. They refer people to another clinic for abortions.
