Even Steven- A song by Nataly Dawn

I have been on a Nataly Dawn kick (from Pomplamoose) lately and her whole solo album reminds me of Free Jinger, but this song particularly:

http://grooveshark.com/#!/search/song?q ... ven+Steven

Lyrics:

If I could get even with steven

I’d sacrifice many other day

To tell all the people who worship his name

All the tales of his merciless ways

It’s sad not a soul would believe them

So think as the web that he spun

But I know the truth of his terrible tales

And maybe the truth will save one

Oh steven, you’re not a man

You’re not even a boy

You’re just one cheating, apple eating heathen

The truth will bring me joy, oh joy, oh joy

If I could get even with steven

I’d have 2 stoops of very low

A swift uppercut wouldn’t cut it

I feel so below, yeah on top we must go

I give you a reason for leaving

And tell your incestuous clan

To quit the charades and for once just behave

As the heavenly father commence

Oh steven, you’re not a man

You’re not even a boy

You’re just one cheating, apple eating heathen

The truth doth bring me joy, oh joy, oh joy

But I can’t get even with steven

I pray dear saint peter to spare

Now one feels the detail of your wretched ways

When you judge for you many affairs

Cause I cringe when I think that you’re thievin

Some poor helpless heart as I speak

But the handsome gets bastards

Are all in god’s grace

Till the craziest wake from their sleep

Oh steven, you’re not a man

You’re not even a boy

You’re just one cheating, apple eating heathen

The truth will bring me joy, oh joy, oh joy.

Anyone else listened to hr album and been reminded of fundies?

That is awesome!

Steven sounds like a Gothard or Doug Phillips kind of character.

What is the backstory on the singer? Has she ever had any connection to a cult that she might actually be singing about, or is she just into fundies like we all are.

I don't know her backstory, outside of wikipedia, but she has been with her current band for a while. From her solo album, it sounds like she has either had a run in with fundie-litism or has taken on that persona as a character study for the album.

A couple other fundie tainted songs:

Still a Believer:

Caroline:

Why Did You Marry?

Oh, wow! I used to be really into Pomplamoose, and kind-of forgot about them in the past few years. I am really excited to listen to her album now, especially with the possible fundy connection!

I did some googling and found this interview:

http://www.npr.org/2013/02/09/171398381 ... ataly-dawn

Apparently her dad was a pastor and theology professor (the host says "missionaries" but she didn't elaborate on that), some people in her family disapprove of her lifestyle choices now, and the album is about her struggle with faith and her relationships with other women in her family and how those all connect. They were talking about the song "Why Did You Marry?" and Nataly said it was about how some churches set that up to be the only option for girls and how it limits their potential, and the host was like "well at least it's an option to not get married in America". Nataly was super quick to jump in with a "yeah but..." about how in some churches, that type of choice is super restricted and doesn't seem like a realistic option to girls, which was super interesting. I would definitely guess that her family is fundie light just based off that comment alone. I'm glad she got out. I saw in another interview that she went to Stanford and her parents supported her making music after graduation, so maybe her parents relaxed a little or she got more of that pressure from other people in her family?

ETA: Could the Steven be... Maxwell????? This song is almost on the level of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" evilness :naughty:
