Mmm I know. I just write my second name and then my last name. Then I take a random street in my city. I also feel uncomfortable with sharing way too many details.

That's what I did, too. But, given that willing signatories don't grow on trees, they should know better than to squick out the ones they CAN find.

Brought this thread back from the dead. It's my little obsession...to see this book go down. Anyway, I noticed there is a Spanish edition with three reviews. The two one-starred reviews are in English but the one Spanish review is glowing. Anyone with a good command of Spanish want to leave a negative review of the Spanish version of the book? It would be a good public service. The fact that Pearl thought his book would be a runaway hit in another language is a testament to his huge ego.

I share your obsession but sadly have no command of the spanish language!

I share your obsession, and, sadly, lack fluent Spanish skills.

I do, however, check Amazon and GoodReads periodically, to see if there are new negative reviews I can vote up, new positive reviews to vote down, and to look for opportunities to comment.

I want those who comment against the book to be able to say honestly that they read the whole thing. I trust that anyone here who did so wouldn't suddenly be in favor of the Pearls' bizarre methods.

So, for anyone who is interested:

Thanks! We were talking about this in one my classes about child abuse and I brought up the book but I'd only seen parts of it. The prof is really interested in what these people are preaching since he'd never heard of anyone advocating using plumbing line against their children, let alone books telling people to do so.

Just skim reading the book from the link and had to post this:

"Let me interject: All children's dolls should be BABY dolls, not "Barbie" dolls. The fantasy arising from playing with baby dolls causes the child to role-play mother. The fantasy arising from Barbie dolls causes a child to role-play a sex goddess."

Crazy talk!

My favourite quotations

"If you leave your sons for the women to rear, don't be surprised if at sixteen they act more like daughters."

"Gender role distinction is demeaned in modern education. Don't let a coven of Sodomites and socialists, hiding behind the badge of professional psychologists, reprogram your natural feelings on male and female distinctiveness. A boy needs a man's example if he is expected to grow up to be a man."

"For your childrens' own good, teach them to maintain control of their emotions. If you do not want to produce a sissy who uses adversity as a chance to get attention, then don't program them that way. When your toddler falls over on the floor, don't run and pick him up, speaking in an alarmed sympathetic voice."

"When still a youth, I saw a teenage girl, jilted by a boyfriend, feign being hurt. I know an adult who hurts herself every time she gets emotionally disturbed. If, in your family, these extremes never occur, it is nonetheless more pleasant to live with a child or teenager who is not a "crybaby." Also, your daughter's future husband will appreciate your having trained her. And your sons will be better men."

"Hollywood is not for God's children. Don't allow the brainless, subversive Sesame Street type propaganda to come into your house. Your children's thinking should be molded by the word of God and Christian example, not by sex perverts and socialists. If you want to destroy your family then get yourself a good TV and VCR to keep the kids company."

Gah. That was harder to get through than the preview for Birth Control is Sinful in the Christian Marriages and also Robbing God of Priesthood Children!!

You are welcome. I would love to hear what your prof says about it (and the class, if it gets discussed there).

It sickens me that anyone on the planet thinks this book is useful, and I want the word about it spread far and wide, especially to people who can intelligently pick it apart.

I'm not surprised that one of the reviews on the Spanish is a glowing review. Spanking is common in Hispanic communities, but many Hispanics don't go overboard with physical discipline. There are some that can brutal with discipline.
