People in 15 states start petitions to secede from U.S.

People are losing it in my facebook feed again. Are they upset because people want to secede from the United States? No. They are upset because they think that President Obama is going to hunt down the people who signed those petitions and do some unspecified terrible thing to them.

Dear people: President Obama does not have time for that! He is a busy man with actual things to do! I imagine he rolls his eyes at this ridiculous shit and then goes about his day. He probably feels kind of sorry for you because you are clearly very stupid.

I try to see this stuff as entertaining but come on. It's starting to look like mass hysteria/delusions. I actually feel concerned and worried about some of these folks.

I'm so glad I have my crazy birther cousin hidden in my Facebook feed, because I'm sure she's one of the folks losing her shit right now. For all I know, she's the one who started the Ohio secession petition.

My open letter to all the crazies: People, the President won this election fair and square. He won the electoral college votes, he won the popular vote. The masses voted, and the majority did NOT agree with you! I survived 8 years of George W. Bush. You can survive 8 years of Obama. If anyone is going to send this country to hell in a handbasket, it's not going to be Obama. It's going to be you loonies. Please get over yourselves.

Edited to correct a word

So, is "we're gonna secede" the new "i'm moving to Canada"? It's pretty much the only way they can get a 1st world non-socialistic theocracy. I recommend building a nice island just off the coast of FL (hurricane target), anyone who wants a Christian theocracy where there is no government (except for the church), and enough guns to take down the Death Star can move there and leave the rest of us the hell alone.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but the 25k signatures is only for the petition to be addressed by the president (as part of this website), not the actual procedure (is there even one?), right?

Yes, the 25,000 signatures only means that the president will look at it, not that there will be any concrete or legal actions as a result:

"If a petition meets the signature threshold, it will be reviewed by the Administration and we will issue a response."

And the response is likely to be "you all are morons who haven't thought through the ramifications of secession," except coached in more diplomatic language.

Add Nevada to the list. :P Kinda surprising since the state went to Obama, but there is a definite divide between the Democratic south, home to Las Vegas, which is where the majority of the population lives, and the north, home to Reno, which is solidly red.

Then again, this is the state that brought you Sharron Angle and voted for Ron Paul at the RNC this year, so anything goes .

Obama has routinely ignored petitions that have reached the 25k limit while addressing others that have numbers significantly lower than that limit (the beer recipe is a good example).

The secession wannabe states are like an 8 year old kid furiously packing his belongings to run away. We are the parents trying not to burst out laughing, we'll follow him down the road until he gets tired or hungry and realizes home isn't the worst place to be. Personally I'm all for letting these states out of the union, provided they lose all Federal funding and support as soon as they are "free", because I know they'll come crawling back for federal help.

And perhaps the angry children should listen to the words of their Lord Limbaugh (circa 2004)...

Shut up! Just shut up! Just go away! Bury yourselves in your rat holes and don't come out until you win an election.
:D

But out of all the states, isn't Texas one of the few that could actually do it, without needing to team up with another state? I know that they like to mouth off and say that, but is it actually true? Sure they got oil, and some other stuff. But to be a self-sustaining country? I don't know.

So, if this was to theoretically actually happen, what would happen to all the people in these states that are perfectly happy with being US citizens? Do they have to move? Will they put their house on the market (if they own one) for pennies on the dollar? Will the US still recognize them as citizens? Do the landlocked states realize it's a really stupid idea? Wouldn't the state (or new country) have to buy all it's land from the US?

I mean, let's be honest. No state has successfully left the union. It's kind of like the mob ;).

I saw a status on facebook about it being Obama's fault that states are so divided that this is happening. Yeah, it's totally not to do with those claiming he's a socialist/communist/Muslim/terrorist/threat to the country

I was going to write: You get Kirk Cameron; we get Neil Patrick Harris. But Alan Rickman is a good choice.

You get Victoria Jackson and Drew Carey.

We get Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

You get Bill O'Reilly.

We get Bill Moyers.

If these states are serious about leaving the union, they should really get to work on negotiating trade agreements with foreign nations and putting a tax structure into place before they call it quits.

Personally, I'd lobby for the UK to refuse to trade with any state with misogynistic reproductive laws, racist attitudes/laws, fundamentalist religion and legalised homophobia.

They should do well trading with some of the more Talibanesque middle Eastern and Asian countries, however, so good luck to them.

Yea, you are right! We'll keep the entire Valley. :)

Yipeee! I'm willing to give up the Doug flag as a concession and adopt the Jefferson Flag. Any objections?

As RosyDaisy says some of the objectors can't spell. One of Lady Lydia's fans says on this topic:

I too was disappointed by the election, but I don't know of anything I can do. I saw this morning that 20-23 states have petitions to succeed from the union,

can we add a tie-dye border?

Yes, it's apropos. We need to think about integrating Oregon Country Fair into the legislative process of the state. Also I think it will be necessary to have two departments of Agriculture, one for food and one for smokables, that should keep those hippies down in Ashland and Humboldt counties quiet.

Runs through waving the flag.

I'd add a tye-dye border but I don't have Photoshop on this computer.

Lady Lydia's squalling is absolutely adorable.

As a side note, I wonder why, since homeschooling has been well-established and well-proven for the last 30 to 40 years in our nation, that the impact of it has not been felt in politics in a big way. There has been enough time for these well informed children to become adults and run for office, and yet I hear of only one or two that have done so. When I first began homeschooling in 1982 one of my first thoughts was that the homeschoolers would soon be in Washington, putting things back the way they should be.
.

Um, it might help if you taught them logic or political science. Or, ya know, how to write coherently. Unfortunately, the religious right homeschoolers serve our country merely by making secular homeschoolers look bad.

In teaching your children and sharing your knowledge with others, it is important to know and pass on the signs of communism, socialism and marxism, which are very destructive belief systems and governments, bringing death and human suffering when they are perpetrated on people.

Okay, I take it back. Have someone else teach logic and political science because you clearly do not have even the basic vocabulary.

Serious leg-humping in the comments. "I love youuuuuu Lady Lydia, you are so bbbbbbrilliant."

So now seceding is the new version of "I'm moving to Canada" which was uttered (mostly not seriously) by at least my maternal grandfather when Reagan got elected and by a new coworker who said (as a joke) that she would if Romney won. Given that she stayed in the States through Bush, I don't think the chances were very high.

So now they don't want to bother getting themselves together and moving -- they'll just stay put and bitch about succession. Lazy, I say.

Probably because ignorant people like you aren't giving your kids a well-rounded education. Instead they are being brainwashed and indoctrinated by religious only homeschool curriculum. They way they should be. BTW, I have nothing against homeschooling where children are getting a sound education (like the parents here on FJ provide).
