Comments on a VF book by somebody who seems to 'get' Doug!

Doing research for my attempt at a review of "League Of Grateful Sons," I chanced to learn about a 2009 book by Doug Phillips, The Little Boy Down the Road: Short Stories & Essays on the Beauty of Family Life, available used on Amazon and with the following 3-star review here:

I'm not up on my "fair use" rules so I'll just post the paragraph, here, that made me think this reviewer is a FJian at heart if not in fact. The entire review - as well as those giving the book a higher rating - is worth your time, IMHO, and a new source of examination of Mr. Phillips' methods and media.

Reviewer JR Corry "Jenny" wrote:

That's the funny thing about Phillips, in fact: in just about all of his articles and speeches, he either tries to be clever or amazingly empathetic, and the result is just embarassing to anyone who isn't already composing love letters to him (Phillips' followers are pretty much like Obama's: if he says anything stupid, they either defend it or develop rapid amnesia). With Phillips, a great deal of his dialogue sounds pretentious, even if he's sincere. Since womanhood, for example, is so downgraded and limited by him, he attempts to pull out the trick of many complimentarians before him to make up for it: over-compensation. When he speaks of women or daughterhood, he pours syrup, honey and sugar into his words, the mixture of which sounds more like a recipe for a diabetes attack than anything resembling real feeling or empathy. Since he thinks manhood, on the other hand, is the most holy thing under Christ Himself, you can practically see him flexing muscles and waving a flag for Viagra when he speaks of it. Topics from his blog include, "Manly men write manly letters. Matt Chancey wins the Art of Manliness Man of the Year Award!" Really, why all this stressing over the fact that he's a man and thinks of manly things? Does he think we'll forget this? (Well, maybe he does; after all, he did nickname a feminist he hates after a villain from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and that would give some people reason for concern...)

Yeah, JR Corry posts (or used to post) a LOT on Amazon, trashing the books put out by VF. She likes to mix it up with x-treme fundies. My sense is that she may be a former, but disgruntled, member of the club. IIRC, she had a lot to say about So Much More and Return of the Daughters.

Doomed Harlot, you have given me a treasure! I'm in the midst of JR's review of "Passionate Housewives Desperate for God" and while I don't want to use a sigline, if I did, this would be a contender:

It always irks complimentarians for Christian egalitarians to spread their truths, but nothing makes patriarchals more concerned for your soul than when you actually prove the source of those truths in the Bible.

She posted a very strong one star review on Created to Be His Helpmeet, too.

Oh, she is one of my favorite Amazon reviewers! Her review on Quiverfull is another good one, by the way. She seems to really get the mindset in a way that makes me think she grew up either in or not terribly far removed from it.

Love JR's reviews, her comments are actually how I became aware of the whole patriarchy thing.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole while checking out MJB's link (as I often do while reading Amazon book reviews and accompanying comments) and found this little nugget:

Has this been discussed? Looks like it has some heavy hitters in terms of Patriarchy Wives.

I went to the film festival (SAICFF, put on by Vision Forum) the year that slop won. I didn't watch it. I flat-out refused...Even though all the people I had gone to the festival with were watching it. utter garbage. :-P
