Family with adopted special needs kids moving to Guatemala

The Twietmeyer family came to my attention on a fundie blog I read because they're asking for money (raise your hand if you're surprised) to help fund their move to Guatemala to work alongside the family running the Village of Hope in Guatemala (they've previously naturally turned to the "body of Christ" to fundraise for their foreign adoptions). Now, fine, if you want to pick up and move your whole family to do missionary work in Guatemala, that's your deal.

I however, think it is the height of stupidity and irresponsibility to do so when you've JUST (within the last year) adopted a severely special needs child from an Eastern European mental institution, and have another adopted kid who has Downs' Syndrome. Do these people have any realistic idea about what their services and therapy needs are going to be like in Guatemala? I really damn well hope so, but I can't help but think the answer will be "we will trust in the LORD and he will make everything fine!" Like magic. Because that's how it works with special needs kids in 3rd world countries.

Bonus points: Mom sells some kind of ridiculous sounding herbal supplement that's based off of Biblical passages in the Book of Isaiah. Whoever comes up with these snakeoil supplements and makes them "Biblical" is a freaking genius.

Edited to properly break link. Please simply leave off the http://www at the beginning, no need to substitute DOT for . or insert spaces. lilith

Christians love to scam other Christians in the biblical tradition.

At least with mckmama there's no way she could adopt with their history. As far as curing things, she has claimed her pills & supplements have fixed all sorts of ailments..such creativity:-/

Even if the services and therapies there are great I'd still be concerned that they're spreading themselves way too thin. Parenting special needs children and moving to another part of the world to become missionaries are both huge commitments. All the snake oil in the world isn't going to help them pull off both successfully.

Edited for clarity

Oh my god - no! Guatemala does not need you. Seriously, I grew up there. The whole country is overflowing with missionaries. And, unless they will be living in Guatemala City, the health care is pretty poor.

They link to EACH a site that talks about how adopted children deserve the same rights as biological children and EACH's statement of principles came up and I found these interesting. It's like a different tune then most fundies play with the submit and fall in line with the ranks you have no identity group think.

All children deserve a permanent family and home.

Adopted children are to be treated as if the “natural issue†of their adoptive parents. They are due the same rights, duties and responsibilities as a biological child.

Both domestic and foreign-born adopted children of American citizens deserve equal treatment under state and federal laws.

Neither federal nor state laws should show preference to biological children over adopted children.

Federal law should not treat foreign adopted children of American citizens as immigrants but rather as dependent children of American parents.

Families formed or enlarged by adoption deserve the same treatment under state and federal law as families with biological children.

The adoption process must ensure that safeguards remain in place to protect birth families, orphans, homeless children and adoptive families from fraud and abuse.

The adoption process should be as simple and streamlined as possible in order that more children who need families can be placed in a permanent family and home.

They sound a bit like the Inions. They have 4 birth children and 4 adopted extreme special needs children. They've lived all over the place (Philippines, Taiwan, Mexico and Belize ). I do wonder if the kids had access to any needed therapy. They always looked well cared for but you never know.

Can someone explain to me why it's okay for them to ask for money but they are critical of anyone who accepts financial help through the government? Is it about control? Objections to how tax dollars are spent? What? At the end of the day both are truly 'socialist' once could argue -- money from the group going to help individuals.
