Mark Driscoll On The Enviroment

Perhaps he was joking but the comment does say something about his theology.

“I know who made the environment and he’s coming back and going to burn it all up. So yes, I drive an SUV.â€

Anti-environmentalism aside, believing that you don't have to do your part on earth because some deity will destroy it and being gleeful about what you believe will be the death of perhaps billions of people makes you a crappy person. Even when I was a Christian, the joy that some of my fellow Christians took in discussing the deaths and suffering of a great number of people always disturbed me. I know not every Christian has the same end times believes but there is a minority who almost sound like sociopaths when they discuss how nonbelievers will suffer. Do they not understand how cruel that they come off?

Several of the listeners to Driscoll's speech, retweeted the line

Driscoll followed that line with: “If you drive a minivan, you’re a mini man.â€

What happened to being good stewards of God's creation? Sometimes (most times) I think Driscoll is all style and no substance, and I don't like his style a bit.

Even if they knew, they wouldn't care....

Mark Driscoll is truly scum of the earth. His views on women make me want to puke.

Driscoll is a huge douche and his comments about the environment don't surprise me. They remind me of that crazy Kelly C posting from a year or two ago where she said not to worry about oil, "because God will make more".

I'm new to this guy's ranting. Ugh. That whole "who gives a rip what we do because Jesus is coming back soon" mindset is so distasteful to me.

My personal theology as a Christian turns me in the complete opposite direction of these yahoos. I look around me when I'm out and about, taking a walk, whatever, and I am so utterly blown away by the beauty and the diversity of this world that all I want to do is sit down and observe it for hours, discover it, research it, PROTECT IT.

We drove large vehicles for 13 years (first a minivan, then an SUV) when we had four kids to tote around. Now that the oldest is 19 and we never all six go anywhere at the same time anymore, we got a Hyundai Sonata. The thing is a dream, it gets 35+ mpg for us in town and usually over 42 on the highway. I love that it's more efficient and lowers our footprint at least a little.

Yeah, but in the meantime, you're living in the NOW, asshole, not in some nebulous future. Even if you don't give a royal flying fuck about the non-believers, what about your fellow fundies? Do you want them breathing toxic air? Drinking contaminated water? Eating food that's been tainted with environmental poisons? No one deserves to live in swill.

By his reasoning, if he shits his drawers, he should be just fine sitting in it until his ass rots. Somehow, I don't think so...

We live just outside Seattle. Driscoll's church has numerous congregations in the area. One of my colleagues attends his church; let's just say we don't discuss it. He's a misogynist, for starters. Why would any thinking woman agree to marry him, let alone attend his church?

I seem to remember Bible verses about judgment. (Removing the board from one's own eye before removing the splinter from someone else's, for instance.) I know listening to someone else detail how all who don't follow JEEEEEESUS will suffer horribly makes me want to join them. Uh, no. It just shows me they have no reading comprehension. And yeah, I agree with you: Those who rejoice in the potential suffering of people who don't adhere to the same religious beliefs they do are sociopaths.

We're also commanded to be stewards of the Earth, if I remember correctly.

"Mini man", huh? Driscoll hates and despises gays almost more than he hates women. He's a bully and a blowhard. His penis must be microscopic.

Anyone who'd like to read more about the magic that is Mark Driscoll should check out the investigative articles in The Stranger.

Sometimes I wish I believed in Hell so people like this could burn in a CO2-filled environment afterlife. But I just can't.

What is this minivan hate? We have a Clinton-era Ford (my Mr. Babe commutes with it to work) because it's roomy enough to haul the things we need for my profession and our hobbies, plus it gives better gas-mileage than Bush-era "economy" vehicles.

I've always thought SUVs are penis-compensation vehicles, so I wonder who the mini-men really are here? I mean think about it...if minivans are "feminine," wouldn't it take bigger balls to drive one? Whereas w/an SUV, you let the vehicle do all the man-work for you.

This.

Sonatas are excellent cars. We had one for 10 years. It was totalled once (by my DD), put back together by DH and 'untotalled' by the DMV, driven for awhile longer by DH, then passed on to his dad (long story I won't bore everyone with here), who drove it for a little bit and then gave it to my niece, who's been driving it for almost two years now. It still looks good, drives great, and gets fantastic gas mileage. It will probably get her through four years of college if she takes care of it. We're considering another Sonata when the time comes to buy a new or semi-new car again.

/Hyundai commercial over.

Christians have been expecting Christ to return shortly for the last two thousand years, and it's really starting to make Him look inconsiderate. He couldn't call? Or text?

But man, what an asshole Driscoll is. If God gives you the earth and you are expecting to eventually have to return it to him, even basic decency requires that you return it in good condition. Remind me never to loan this guy my lawnmower or anything.

This makes me damn glad I just ordered a bumpersticker from Gypsy Rose that says "Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned, and the last fish has been caught, we realize we cannot eat money". I also am a member of Earth Justice, the National Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club.

Save the Earth! It's the only planet we've got!

So Mark shouldn't mind if I go in and vandalize his house and turn it into a big fucking dump. Because Jesus is coming and it doesn't matter! Right, Mark?

I don't get the minivan hate either. My family had a mini-van for several years when I was growing up. I'm a bit surprised that Driscoll went there with the min-van hate, some of his followers are families who probably have mini-vans. Many men drive the family mini-vans to work or around for different reasons. One of my relatives is a high school music teacher and he uses a mini-van to haul instruments and equipment.

So Jesus will be happy to return to a shithole of a slum? No wonder Jesus does not want to return Christians have ruined his Edan.

Actually, according to the bible we were kicked out of Eden. It's like God decided, "ok humans, if you're going to pollute the rest of the earth, fine, knock yourselves out. But you are NOT touching my Garden of Eden, thank you very much."

Driscoll is a sweaty, narcissistic buffoon. I will never understand how anyone can take this pompous clown seriously.

That said, IIRC, nobody can know the day or the hour of Jesus's return. Could be today, could be tomorrow, could be ten thousand years from now. (Or, if you're like me and not a Christian, the answer would be "never.")

So for Driscoll to do as he likes, with no care for the environment (God's creation) or the suffering environmental degradation will bring to all people--including his fellow Christians--is despicably arrogant.

Driscoll followed that line with: “If you drive a minivan, you’re a mini man.â€

That he has so much of his identity as a man wrapped up in what vehicle he does or does not drive shows just how insecure and shallow this swaggering manchild really is.
