Stupid Stuff People Post on Facebook

There was a topic about Fundies and Facebook. What about stupid stuff that non-fundies post. Here's a few from my news feed just in the last few days:

1. When there's a bombing, we blame the bomber; Where there's a drunk-driving, we blame the driver; Why, when there's a shooting, do we blame the gun.

2. Hypocrisy; Blaming every law abiding gun owner for the deaths of children while supporting abortion.

3. The Boston Marathon bombing wasn't real. Just the governments way of controlling us.

4. I posted a saying that a pastor said homosexuality is no more a sin than divorce is. My step-dad responded back that I needed to read my bible because Genesis 18 & 19 talk about God destroying Sodom, not to believe everything I read on the internet and asked why I was on pro homosexual websites.

One of my friends was complaining about her job & got this in response: "The way things are looking, you ain't gonna need that job much longer!!! Jesus is coming back!!"

My ex-husband (the in-the-closet newly ordained non-denominational preacher) is always posting conservative, anti-women, anti-abortion crap on Facebook. I see it because he tags my kids. My daughter recently posted a funny status asking why her university gives out condoms for free but she has to buy tampons. Ex responded with an abstinence-only, anti-abortion, anti-socialism rant, then posted a link from a crisis pregnancy center offereing free diapers. :angry-banghead:

My daughter's college-aged friends wiped the floor with him.

Can't wait to have that transgender conversation with him.

Stupid stuff people post on Facebook? I predict this thread is going to be a multi-parter.

I know this is terrible of me, but I no longer have any conservatives on my FB except my cousin, who is pretty mild and not really into the social issues. Plus, bless her heart, I don't think she even knows what critical thinking is, so I give her a pass. Otherwise, I don't really have any conservative friends to begin with, simply because there are very few of them in my universe (academia; northeast of the U.S.) I just don't want my blood pressure to rise every time I log on. I read plenty of other crazy conservative bullshit elsewhere on the web.

With all the stupid shit posted on Facebook you could publish several books-an encyclopedia set of stupid shit posted on Facebook.

This one has been making the rounds on my conservatie friends boards. I so want to say umm do we not remember the lobbying efforts of MADD to make drunk driving a more criminal offense. The whole we can not have laws because criminals will still break them is such a logical fail. Also did anyone watch the great John Oliver interview piece on the Daily Show last night?

Do they not realise that we do blame the murderer when people shoot people.

Bombs are illegal, you cant just walk into a store a buy one, because we need to restrict peoples ability to make things that explode and can be used to kill.

We have a lot of restrictions on cars, like how old you can be before you can have one, you have to pass a test to get a licence to drive one, then theres also restrictions like speed limits, seatbelts, not being able to drive when drunk to stop them being dangerous.

But yet they want it so anyone can get hold of a gun. Any attempt at making it so the kind of person who is likely to murder others cant get hold of one is seen as against human rights.

The newest is about Timothy McVeigh didn't use a gun, but killed 168 people and you can still buy fertilizer.

I wish I wasn't surrounded by conservatives or people who think the Democratic government is evil.

the next time i see someone's friends "hack" their facebook and post hilarious!!!! statuses about how they're gay, i will personally drive to their houses and flush pads down their toilets

I also know someone who shared from and changed her picture for about a month to content from this shitty pro-life page. I think most of the conservatives have either been pruned or self-pruned themselves from my page by now, though.

In addition to the conservative stuff, there are people on Facebook who still post things about urban legends that Snopes has debunked. I'm not talking about the Boston marathon or 9/11 conspiracy theories either, but legends that have been going around before Facebook. One I saw just yesterday was a variation of the "helpful stranger" turning out to be a potential rapist or murderer that was said to happen in a mall parking lot involving a woman with a flat tire. Some of those people even think that Snopes is biased, or in on the 9/11 conspiracy theories. The person who posted that urban legend is a cousin who is in another state whose husband has managed to isolate her from everyone, especially after her mom died of cancer. We've seen red flags about her husband being potentially abusive, but since she won't see it or speak to any of us, there's not much anyone can do about her.

Yeah, I get tons of those urban legends on Facebook and I actually got deleted once by someone because I kept linking to Snopes and telling him that these things are fake.

Theres also tons of chain status updates going around. "COPY AND PASTE THIS TO YOUR STATUS IF YOU HATE CANCER" and stuff like that. Usually with a "Most people wont because they dont care about helping sick children, share if you have a heart".

Theres also graphic photos going around, I wish people would stop sharing them, even if it is to help for a cause (like abused animals, aftermath of a drunk driving accident, a guy in a pool of blood with his legs blown off...). Also some of the pictures of sick kids people are asking others to share saying that Facebook will donate money to go towards their medical treatment for each share (like that would ever happen) have already died and the parents are upset by seeing the stolen pictures of their dead kid being used in this way.

I also have a right wing conpiracy theorist and a fundie lite.

I HATE those. No one loves cancer, idiots. We just hate copy and posting stupid shit.

My ex posts a lot of urban legend crap.

And I HATE those stupid pictures that say, "Like if you love Jesus" "Keep scrolling if you love Satan"!

I have a couple of fundie/ fundie lite/conservative cousins, and some old friends from church days on my friends list. I posted about Republicans being as bad as the Taliban when it comes to women, & one cousin commented, "Really, cuz, really?" An old friend from church days made a hateful comment on a quote by Michelle Obama. Usually I delete the comments, & I've started restricting who sees my posts. My IFB sis is not speaking to me already. I've lost a few of my old church friends, too.

It's not a secret I'm a liberal feminist; it's right there in my profile.

Why don't I unfriend them? I dunno. Our grandparents & some of our parents are gone, & I'd like to keep in touch even if they are fundie jerks.

Yes, this. My MIL puts up the world's most logically flawed urban legends as gospel truth and it makes me crazy.

There's a ton of this on my news feed too. Urban legends as far as the eye can see, some days. The thing that drives me up a wall about it is that when you link to Snopes, they refuse to delete the status or even admit they were wrong - they just double down and dig in deeper.

I've actually gone on a hiding/blocking tear this week because I just can't take it anymore. Now banished forever from my page are such winners as:

- Dude who constantly posts pictures of abused animals because it shows how much he cares about eliminating animal abuse, apparently

- Woman who linked to a bunch of Boston Marathon bombing conspiracy theories because "even if it's not true, it's something to think about"

- Extreme leftist guy, regionally known for dumping a beer on a state representative, who believes every conspiracy theory in the book and constantly posts about how his relatively unimportant Midwestern city is on the verge of being destroyed by drone strikes because I don't know Obama something or other

- My best friend from kindergarten who can't stop flogging every NRA talking point in the book

- And more!

And that's why Facebook is terrible.

My conservative family on Facebook can be wrapped up in one fake word: brownpeoplephobia!

Are we related? Because that's mine, too. Especially this week. Although, they've been pretty quiet since we found out it wasn't brown people in Boston. They are holding out hope for guilty brown people in Texas, though. :?

I have gotten rid of most of my fundie conservative friends who post stuff, so I don't see a lot of it. But this one older lady that I've known my whole life posted something about how there was a reason to put up a fence to keep the Muslims out. I don't think she posted it, I think one of her kids did because usually her posts are like I DON'T KNOW IF I AM DOING THIS RIGHT BUT I NEED MY GRANDSON TO CALL ME., like five times in a row.

I do have the people who never check snopes and are always posting fake stories. They usually get offended if it is pointed out that the story is made up.

In response to Boston, someone on my Facebook news feed wrote, "Too many people have the devil in their heart. That's what's wrong with the world." And as a reply someone said, "The moral fiber of this country is deteriorating at an unprecedented speed. Wake up people."

I know these people, so I don't know if the smugness comes across as well as it does for me.

I've gotten the, "Gang members are planning on murdering a woman your age and race tonight at [insert local grocery store here] as part of a gang initiation ceremony, and the police know about it but haven't closed [local grocery store] or made any announcements warning people on the news and they're also not planning on posting officers at [local grocery store], but one police officer mentioned this plan which is definitely going to happen to a friend who helpfully sent out this email to everyone he knows and that hopefully your friends sent you because that's an efficient way to do law enforcement or anything" chain email about twelve times. And once I got it as a text message. The text message was listed on the local news website as a prank, but multiple people still sent it to me.

But I always have to temper my annoyance with remembering that people only send me that stuff because they care about me and don't want me to be shot in front of [local grocery store].

I'm not sure because I'm kinda knew to facebook, but I think I've been defriended by someone because I pointed out the holes in her Oklahoma City vs gun violence argument. And I am devastated. See all the eff's I give?

Ahh...mine think they are Communists. But it is Friday night in Appalachia and one of them has a birthday, so they've forgotten the whole thing for now.

I had someone defriend me once over me always linking to Snopes on their stupid stories. She did not like facts.

Add homophobia and liberal-phobia and that sums up a good chunk of my fundie FB relatives. I should delete them, but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.
