I wonder how many fundies with choose Harvard ? It seems to me the online classes will let students avoid those ungodly visuals of tattoos and women in pants. And its cheaper than college minus.

Let's think of it this way, Lard Lad could go to Harvard Law.

Quote
...Harvard University has teamed up with Massachusetts Institution of Technology in an "historic" partnership to launch the online education centre "edX". The project, which launches this autumn, aims to offer education on a mass scale.

Anant Agarwal, president of edX, called the initiative a "revolution".

"There is a revolution dawning in Boston and beyond. This revolution has to do with the pen and the mouse. It's unbelievable. We will have students around the world all collaborating and working together."

Agarwal, who dubbed the partnership the "next big thing", says edX will be available to anyone with an Internet connection and is currently absolutely free.

"Our goal is to educate 1bn people around the world..."

I can't imagine the free classes having the same usefulness as the ones you pay for, though. It would be great if they did, but if you could just get a degree for free, Harvard would go under because no one would be paying tuition. I see nothing about admission requirements, either. This just looks like a fancy new way of disseminating information. So I don't think Josh could get a law degree through this.

Is it like other open courses? Like the ones from Stanford, etc? You do the classes but don't get credits. My 14 year old has done a couple. The last 2 were Model Thinking (he got 90%) and Computer Science 101 (they did quizzes etc, but there was no final mark). He has signed up for 1 for the summer as well. And has 3 in mind come Fall (History from 1300, Physical Science and American Poetry). We consider it part of his homeschooling curriculum and he basically just picks whatever interests him.

Ultimately it won't mean anything in terms of credits or university acceptance, but it is a great way to learn new stuff.

I don't think degrees are included in the free price tags. But I for one will take a Harvard course or two. I think it's great academic discipline for students and those of us who want to be life long learners.

I would love to take a Harvard course or two online free since I'm the kind of person who loves learning things for fun, and want to take something I know I'd love but would never have had the opportunity to take as part of my degree.

Though if fundies hear of this they'd probably say they "went" to Harvard by doing this. It's all about image to them, so it doesn't matter that they can't use it they're not allowed anyways. Though Smuggar is probably too lazy to take even one online Harvard class, even when grades don't matter.

On YouTube, I'm currently making my way through the lectures of a Yale history class on Tudor and Stuart England

I don't pretend it's the same thing as actually being there and doing the work, but when I get tired of Pandora at work, it's a nice alternative for this history buff.

Oooh, I'll have to look for this.

The American Poetry one my son is looking at doing sounds really interesting. Student discussions on a forum (as part of the course work), essays and quizzes. He doesn't really love poetry, but is super excited about this. Can't wait to check out the Harvard ones :)

Look at the opinions on this thread. Folks here are purely interested in learning for the sake of it, or learning about topics that interest them. SODRT kids like the Duggars et al, don't have that drive or that desire. You graduate SODRT at 16 take a couple College Minus classes and they're done with it.

Their parents are scared of them learning too much, though. It's not like they'd be allowed to take a real history or science course even if they wanted to.

I just had this weird vision of Josh sneeking off to the back room at the dealership to take an online anthropology course

The only online courses Joshie boy is taking are in how to get free porn. That's mean, but I'm reasonably sure its true.

The courses sound fascinating. I'm in school right now but I don't get to take arts or history courses as part of an engineering and MBA dual degree program. It would be nice to fulfill a certain intellectual curiosity. I'm truly jealous of kids these days who can take advantage of this, in my youth there were no interwebs :-(

I'll do you one better! It starts here:

I found it via Open Culture, which lists online courses in a bunch of different areas:

http://www.openculture.com/freeonlinecourses

Hopping from the free online courses link has me investigating podcasts on itunes from different universities-including Liberty! I'm tempted to get their English language courses (place in the world, etc) to compare with a more "liburul" school...

Thanks for posting this! I'm definitely going to have to check out some courses. I only have 2 more semesters to go for my undergrad. There have been many classes that I've wanted to take, but can't because my major is very narrowly focused.

Thank you for this! I did a Miss Raquel :::squee::: when I clicked on the second link. I'm currently trying to decide where to start. I want to cover basically everything in the geography, history and literature sections. Oh, and learn some more advanced Russian and Spanish too!

Thanks for posting this. I'm having to put off real college for another year or two, but I signed up for several courses through [link=http://www.coursera.org/]Coursera[/link]. Maybe that'll help get my brain ready to go back to school.

There are also tons of university lectures on iTunes U. I've taken a bunch of seminary classes that way for the info.
