Father Martin McVeigh was giving a talk to 26 parents and one 8-year-old kid when computer disaster struck. He connected his USB drive into a PC to start his Powerpoint presentation and, instead of the word of God, a hardcore gay porn slideshow started—thanks to Windows' autoplay.

Some parents—who were there to hear McVeigh talk about First Communion—were angry. Others were in shock. Just like McVeigh. He was so embarrassed that, according to witnesses, unplugged the USB drive and walked out of the room without uttering a single word. Later he declared to the press:

I don't know how it happened but I know what happened. There are people making innuendoes who weren't even there but in this day and age these stories grow.

The article didn't make clear whether he was a Catholic priest or an Anglican/other priest. If he was a Catholic, you bet your life this will be the end of his career with the Church. I feel awful for the guy  but maybe he'll get a better life out of the bargain.

He's a Catholic priest because the Anglican church doesn't have First Communion separate from Confirmation (and in the Catholic church kids are 7/8yos when they have First Communion, which would make the 8yo being there make sense).

At least it was adult porn.

Excellent point.

He should use this opportunity to learn about safe file sharing. I mean, he had to have lent his USB drive to someone and they put the porn on there, right? He never would downloaded that to view for himself when he got some alone time and could really relax....

Always keep separate USB drives. Personal vs work in all cases. Such a simple security precaution but so easily overlooked.

I had an embarrassing thing like that happen to me my last year of school! I was supposed to be doing a presentation, so I was waiting for my name to be called so I was looking at fan fiction. I forgot to close it off, and set up my computer and bam for all 100 students to see in huge letters what I was reading...and it was a pretty steamy scene. Oops....

He really ought to keep his porn separate from his work material!

I feel bad for the guy, though. Catholic priests are not only expected to refrain from having any kind of sexual relationship, even masturbation is considered to be something that breaks their "vow of chastity."

Me too. It's hard enough being a gay lay member of the Catholic church, let alone a gay priest.

Whoa. Times have changed since I was a tenth-grader in 1968. In CYO (Catholic Youth Organization), we had a hip young black future priest, a seminarian named Brother Bill. We bought him a Supremes poster (positively prudish by today's standards) to hang in his dorm room, and he told us they wouldn't let him hang it up.

I can't believe they wasted the cops' time by calling them about a bit of porn. If someone who wasn't the Archdiocese called the cops over something so obviously legal, I bet they'd be slapped with a fine.

He really should disable autoplay on his computer. You can get viruses from having it enabled.

You know, quite apart from the gay porn issue. :D
