Have You Heard Of Bob McDonnell?

Some people are saying that Bob McDonnell might be on both Santorum and Romney's list for vice president. In 1989 he wrote a thesis that he has since said no longer reflects his values. Because I have undergone changes to my own policitical and religious views, I understand how someone can undergo a drastic change in their thinking. I am not certain that he has changed.

For example, he tried to pass an amendment to the Virginia constitution that would prevent same sex marriage. He has said that he will sign an bill requiring women to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound before an abortion

You can read the thesis at the above link.

Because he is a possible contender for vice president which places him very close to the presidency, I think that we need to know more about this man.

If you don't want to read his thesis, here is a summary of it

As the paper noted, McDonnell argued, among other things, that working women and feminists are “detrimental†to the family; that government policy should favor married couples over “cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators;†and that the court decision legalizing the use of contraception by unmarried couples was “illogical,†because at the time non-marital sex was itself a crime.

and

Soon after calling the Supreme Court’s decision on contraceptives “illogical,†McDonnell blasts “the perverted notion of liberty that each individual should be able to live out his sexual life in any way he chooses without interference from the state†(pg. 15). It was essentially that “perverted notion of liberty,†of course, that the Supreme Court would uphold in 2003 when it struck down Texas’s anti-sodomy law

And he attacks the phenomenon of women working outside the home, writing that the proliferation in the day care industry was caused by the desire of some women “to break their perceived stereotypical role bonds and seek workplace equality and individual self-actualization.†Asks McDonnell: “Must government subsidize the choices of a generation with an increased appetite for the materialistic components of the American Dream?†(pg. 45)

It is also becoming clear in modern culture that the voting American mainstream is not willing to accept a true pro-family ideologue…Leadership, however, does not require giving voters what they want, for whimsical and capricious government would result. Republican legislators must exercise independent professional judgment as statesmen, to make decisions that are objectively right, and proved effective. (pg. 61)

He sounds like a modern Republican. To be honest, I must repeat, he has said that his views have changed.

Apparently getting mocked on The Daily Show and SNL has prompted him to change his mind. The story includes links to the comedy clips. :)

McDonnell, who has been mentioned often as a potential vice presidential candidate, had originally backed the bill but now a spokesman says he will not commit to it until he sees the final version.

This is likely going to get him crossed off Santorum's list, and Romney would be really dumb to pick someone else accused of flip flopping.

I think that bill caused a lot of people to pay more attention to him than he might have wanted.

We need a leader that wants to put in place results-oriented conservatism,†McDonnell told a friendly crowd of more than 150 huddled for warmth at the outdoor event. “That is: Stick to your conservative guns but quit making excuses. Just get things done.â€

It doesn't sound like his views have changed too much.

However, his daughter did serve in Iraq, which makes me wonder if his opinion on women working outside the house might have changed.

Either candidate would need to shore up their perceived weak point with a VP pick. Romney would need a social conservative - preferably from the south - to convince those voters to turn out for him in the general election. Santorum would need a more moderate candidate.

So McDonnell would be a better pick for Romney than Santorum. Sad as it is to say.

I used to live in VA and I voted against McDonnell. He won anyway and I was pissed. His misogynist essay was big news a few years. I don't believe he has changed a bit. He tried to claim he couldn't be sexist because he let his daughter join the military. To me, it just sounded like those racists who claim they can't be racist because they have black friends. McDonnell is as sexist as ever, but he's also powerful and privileged so his own daughters are an exception to the rules that he wants others to follow.

  • 4 weeks later...

Bringing this thread back, because Rachel Maddow was reading some of the wonderful comments women have been leaving on his facebook page, regardless of what he has posted.

Since he seems so interested in their personal plumbing, some have decided to ask him for advice!

For example:

Hi, Bob, just wanted to let you know what's going on since you've been so concerned about my reproductive organs. This is Day 2 of my period (so sometime soon I'll need to report that an egg was denied its right to achieve personhood. Is there a form for that or a number I should call?).

Hi Bob, actually, my period is 4 days late. Some might think, "wow, you got you a little varmint in there," but no, since I had that tubal ligation, late just means a little longer break between cycles, which is nice, you know how that is, dontcha Gov? I already have four children, so my husband and I decided after baby #4, to clog up my plumbing and just raise the ones we have.

You see, we might have had more children, but sadly, with two of ours being autistic, we simply cannot afford to pay out of pocket for the medical treatment of more kids, you know how that goes, right Gov? No wait, you clearly don't, or you'd not have worked so hard with the insurance companies to further delay autism insurance reform. Remember? The law that passed the legislature last year on 2-2-2011, that you have delayed until at least September of this year? yeah, that one.

This, from a man:

Hey Bob, any man taking Viagra or Cialis should have a transurethral ultrasound as well as a digital rectal/prostate exam. The man should also watch a video of the treatment for priapism. Needles of epinephrine injected into the penis. It is only fair that men taking drugs for erectile dysfunction be properly educated about their bodies.

He's my governor and he sucks like a Hoover. He's widely despised, but not so much as Ken Cuccinelli (the Cooch, if you will), who acts sort of like Sarah Palin with a law degree and an elocution coach.
