Fundiest Church in Toronto?

Recommended Posts

I will be travelling to Toronto for business later this month, and spent a bit of time this evening online trying to find the most 'interesting' church to attend (for curiosity purposes). I found a list of IFB churches in Toronto (IFB or UPCI are always a great place to start to look for the cray-cray), but don't really know anything about them.

Wondering if any FJers in/around Toronto have a Fundy church they'd recommend for the experience?

lol.... i'm about 1.5 hrs from Toronto...but unfortunately can't help you :( maybe if/when you figure something out let me know... i WOULD LOVE to see how they function...

I live in an amish/mennonite - and i'd say fundy - region but never ventured in there

when i go anywhere nowadays i have to think where they belong -- today i went to the local discount retail store and i saw 2 of them... i mean it's nothing unusual but it sort of has a different meaning when i think of everything that people think on here... so i did have to look twice

these 2 girls/ladies looked and dressed like the seven sisters

I'm a Toronto girl and I can't think of any that are spectacularly fundy in the sense that they'd be entertaining, though check out the "free thought centre". Creepy, creepy place.

OH and we do have the scientology centre on yonge street between Wellesley and Bloor. You can take a personality test and watch informational videos. It's pretty weird and my friend and I have had great successful fun there learning about how asthma comes from loud noises scaring you as a child or something.

By freethought, do you mean the place just south of U of T? On McCaul, I think?

I can't think of anywhere fundy, OP, just conservative Anglican, which is not particularly conservative at all. Toronto is not the most fundy city on Earth.

Are you talking about the old Pagan Palace?

Friend google found me this link with several IFB churches in Toronto:

http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Miscella ... canada.htm

Yep, thanks. I actually used google too when I found that list of fib churches, but I was wondering if FJers had actually been to any (just bc I couldn't tell for sure from the websites which were the fundiest... Although the Scarborough one witha kjv only bookstore sounded promising!)

Edited to correct autocorrect mistakes.

Try this:

gfcto.com/

This is one of the pastors:

challies.com

He writes a blog and frequently deletes comments asking questions or quoting scripture he doesn't like.

Authoritarian, calvinista, partriarchial. Tight with calvinista big dogs in the states, C.J. Mahaney, Driscoll, Gospel Coalition. Read their church membership covenant. Doesn't get much better.

Oh, do go to this one. Tim Challies is a first class asshole, and I'd like to know about the church that encourages this kind of behavior.

I too, live on the outskirts of Toronto (in the area of Mennonite country, memmy are we neighbours). I attend U of T, where I am a doctoral student, so I am in T.O. frequently.

I avoid fundie churches like the plague they are so I can't comment on any. But, if you want a breath of fresh air, check out Metropoliitan United. Liberal and affirming. I haven't been there in years but last I attended it was wonderful. If you just want some nice architecture check out the church named after Timothy Eaton or any of the chapels at the University Colleges (Trinity is lovely).

Toronto is a pretty great city. Enjoy.

I am sorry I mean this in the nicest way possible. You really want to spend your precious time in a fundie church instead of sightseeing, visiting one of many interesting Toronto's musea?

I'm from Toronto and our version of fundies aren't nearly as entertaining as the American version. At least you wouldn't find any that call Obama a socialist and say that universal health care is of the devil. I think they've even gotten so used to gay marriage being legal that although they probably hate it they're not really vocal about their beliefs here. You should definately try the scientology centre, i've always wanted to but been too scared. Toronto is an awesome diverse city so i'm definately sure you can find many more non fundie things to enjoy if you happen to be there on a Wednesday night the AGO has free admission. I believe either Thursday or Friday night the ROM is half price. We don't really have American style fundies, so i don't know whether a fundie church visit would be worth it. We do have some spectacular looking old churches though.

If you want a beautiful church that most people don't even know about? St. Anne's Anglican just NE of Dufferin and Dundas. Byzantine style - only one in Toronto. And all the art work is by members of the Group of Seven! Absolutely stunning. I used to sing in their choir years ago.

I agree. Don't waste your time with fundie churches. The ROM and AGO are great. Go to the top of the CN tower or catch a play or the symphony.

Have fun.

GTA, outside the city limits, but compasspointonline.ca was my grandfather's church, although it looks like it is more fundi-lite mega-church now.

LOL, feel free to judge me Latravista(as you should!), but I do indeed want to spend my time that way, I really do. Fundy churches are like a museum unto themselves. I've also been to Toronto before, so have already enjoyed the touristy stuff and museums. I know they are excellent, but nothing fills my mind with awe and wonder (and bewilderment) like a good Fundy service.

Creaky Mom- thanks for the great recommend, that might be my winner. :)

DaisyJane- There is something about liberal churches that they just don't "grab" me like the Fundy ones do (most Fundy churches 'grab' me emotionally... the odd one will literally try to grab you though). I haven't been to the Metropolitan United church before, but I did go to the Metropolitan Community Church- beyond awesome. Best liberal church ever, hands down. A church that is predominantly gay in membership, AND has a praise and worship evening service?!? Sign me up! (if I lived there)

I also love that the Metropolitan Community Church denomination has the much sought after web address of Jesus.com Mostly I love it because I know it drives the fundies crazy that such an 'ungodly' and non-kjv church own that web address.

agree with skipping the churches - Toronto is not that fundie (although must be pockets of right wing nuts - after all Rob "I've never read a book and I'm proud of that" Ford did get elected)

go to the ROM or the AGO or see a show (a friend just saw the Penelopiad and liked it)

if you like to run - a great place is on the board walk at the Beach

if you like to shop: Bloor is good for higher end stuff, Eaton centre for your standard mall stores, Queen street (east or west ) for a bit more unusual stuff

if you like tea - go to David's tea on Queen East

Toronto has some pretty good clubs but I don't know too much about that so you'd need to ask someone younger

I'm biased because I live here but I really like Toronto

Toronto just doesn't have the same kind of fundies as there are in the states. American fundies would probably call our version of fundies liberal heathen socialists :D Sure there are pockets of crazy, but their level of crazy isn't even close to the level of American fundies, and they'd have drastically smaller numbers. So it wouldn't really be the same level of fun to go to a fundie church in a city full of 'godless heathens' and I kinda doubt we have anything like that here.

I'm a used-to-be fundy, and my church supported missionaries to Toronto who worked with Lighthouse Baptist Church. I have a CD from there, called "Songs from the Lighthouse," and it's solidly in the "no beat, rhythm or note-sliding" category of fundy music."

Charles McVety is probably the closest thing that we have to an American-style fundie, but I don't think he leads Sunday services.

I had a client whose family was involved in the Church of God: http://cogtoronto.ca/what-is-the-church ... n-toronto/

It sounded fundie-like. I should mention that I don't know of any predominantly non-ethnic white fundie churches in Toronto itself. The evangelicals that I've known here were generally Filippino, Korean, Chinese or Jamaican.

You are welcome HTY.

Act interested enough and someone might even invite you home for lunch.

It's happened to us every single time we've been at a church in TO.
