Israel Wayne is having a Pity Party

Has anyone else been watching Israel Wayne whine about how he feels like he doesn't belong because he hasn't rejected fundamentalism? Apparently he's getting all judgey on twitter. "Never judge a system by its abuses. Judge it by its tenets and core values."

What a humblebrag. Sounds like he has it tough being so much holier than the rest of us. 

Also he characterizes the differences between himself and other ex-homeschoolers thusly: 

"I’m not in a recovery group, to mend from the wounds of not being able to play X-Box, and having to do chores, when I was growing up."

Yeah, all those people speaking out about child abuse, educational neglect, and the twisted effects of purity teaching are just mad that they had to do chores.

I recently stumbled across his homeschool pioneers blog, where he interviews homeschoolers of the late 70s and early 80s.  One of the questions he asked is what current trends in homeschooling they don’t like.  Almost to a one the answer was that they don’t like the proliferation of co-ops, open and go curriculums that allow too much time for socialization, and things like that. Basically what these people are decrying is that homeschool families today are not homeschooling to keep their kids safe from peers, but overwhelmingly homeschooling(not fundie homeschooling) has shifted to parents focused on academia.  If you really want your child to have a good grasp of chemistry and your local homeschool co-op offers a lab chem class taught by someone with a chemistry degree, that’s where you’re going to go.  But Israel Wayne and his interviewees are upset by this shift in homeschooling.

Alright I followed the link, and then clicked on the "Danvers Statement" hyperlink in his "I Apologize" text. And I am absolutely baffeled and enraged by that Danvers Statement. I'm just sitting here with a 'you've got to be kidding me' expression on my face. I can't, I just can't with these people. 
The statement is about biblical manhood and womanhood nonesense which just absolutely infuriates me, and it starts with this: "We have been moved in our purpose by the following contemporary developments which we observe with deep concern:". You know what I observe with deep concern? The patriarchy! Religious fundamentalism! Theocracy! People who try to shove their religious beliefs down other people's throats! People who use their religious beliefs to justify the oppression of other groups of people! People who claim they believe in religious freedom for all while simultaneously trying to restrict my/other people’s freedoms because these freedoms are not in line with their religious beliefs!

On his fb post about his blog, Darcy Sproul has been arguing with him, and he actually said that being 23 with no birth certificate, SSN, or drivers license isn't abuse. Then Debi Pearl jumped in and consecrated him. (This is all public, btw.) Well, that's  a ringing endorsement to convince me this system isn't abusive.

Ugh Israel Wayne. My parents were never part of that branch of fundamentalism, although I was familiar with his name. Then as an adult - well after awakening to the horror and distancing myself - I met him and his wife at a wedding. I couldn't believe he has attracted such a huge following over the years because he is NOT charismatic in person. Except for the fact that I recognized his face, I wouldn't have given him a second glance. He was extremely quiet, which of course is fine, but I found it hard to believe he was the same person who speaks to thousands and posts all kinds of judgment on the world. I actually never spoke to him directly, but tried to discreetly keep an eye open. I saw very few people speak to him. Brook, on the other hand, was very friendly and initiated a conversation with me at one point when we were near each other.

 

Israel, your pity party is not fooling anyone and only makes you look more like an idiot.

I think he's deleted the comments. But he has put up a new post saying that he condemns actions that meet strict legal definitions of abuse, he just thinks that most disgruntled folks are whining about nothing. Cool clarification bro!

That is so sad to me. It's how branched out and wonderful it can be when you leave religion out of it, that is making Mr. & I rather hopeful about *maybe* homeschooling our own children, should we have them. I know many secular non religious people who are homeschooling and doing a kick ass job. My homeschool experience was crappy and  religious driven and I don't ever want to repeat that. But discovering a whole community of people "doing it better" has been very inspiring for me.

At this stage it sounds like they're wanting a Maxwell-like existence for their children: no socialisation, no hands-on learning, no questioning of anything that doesn't make sense or people in authority etc. In other words a great disservice to their family.
