I've seen several of these before, just not all together.

That said, "one of these things is not like the other." That would be number 3, where the young boy appears to be reciting the Qur'an and not actually preaching. The crying, I believe, is supposed to indicate a particularly heartfelt recitation.

Reminds me of that Simpsons episode when Bart becomes a preacher and "heals" people. This is the first episode my dad accepted to watch, and he almost choked laughing when the footballer's leg flew up.

I watched it ages ago, in pieces. I think this is the whole thing in one link, though there's some commercials in this version (perhaps this is a TV broadcast that was uploaded?).

Every time I see this, it reminds of of Marjoe Gortner.

The guy was a 3rd generation preacher's kid, and his parents had him going around preaching at 4 & 5 years old. They claimed he had a vision from God, but it later came out that they were training him on what to say and how to "preach" and enforcing it all by holding him underwater and pretending to drown him (because beating would leave bruises that might be seen in public). He made about $3 million by the time he was 16, and his dad took the money and ran off.

Marjoe left shortly after, moved in with an older woman, and became a hippie. He went back to preaching and would spend 6 months out of the year traveling and preaching at tent revivals, and then spend the other 6 months back in California partying. He got tired of the whole double life thing and made a documentary exposing both himself and the whole racket, letting a film crew follow him around.

I just got a chance to watch that, and it made me cry. Those poor children.

Samuel's father is giving him such a warped, nasty outlook on life (complete with a focus on death and burning in hell that would make Steve Maxwell proud). Dad spouts Pearl-esque crap while his wife wallops him, puts him in situations where his fear of anyone who is different is reinforced, and tops off this fucked-up-by-religion sundae with the "we are persecuted just like Jesus" bit.

Anna's father may be destroying her voice and throat with that yelling she "feels called" to do, and the kid from Mississippi is just a money-maker for his family.
