Athletic roots?  He played some baseball in high school but wasn't the best player on the team.  Since then, all he does is cheat at golf.  Dinesh is hoping for a cabinet post.

Yeah this isn't a surprise.

Bad bridges - There are thousands of them in Iowa. A new report from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, an industry trade group ranks Iowa as having the most structurally deficient bridges in the US.

Nearly 1.5 million people cross the 6,616 bridges that need to be replaced every day. The Iowa Department of Transportation says that number doesn’t tell the whole story.

“Well, we’ve been number one in that category for a few years unfortunately,” Scott Neubauer with the Iowa Department of Transportation says they’re aware of the amount of bridges that need to be replaced, but says most of those bridges don’t have much traffic on them. “The majority of those bridges that are poor condition are on the local highway systems, so the traffic volumes are very low on those structures. Half of the poor bridges in Iowa have less than 35 vehicles a day,” Neubauer said.

Part of the reason Iowa ranks so high is that Iowa has more bridges than most states - mostly going over small creeks and culverts - but the low population makes repairs hard to pay for. There’s an average of 120 people per bridge in Iowa.

I think Iowa wouldn't have the most bad bridges if Covid Kim and the Branch Trumpvidian legislature would focus on taking care of this state instead of fighting culture wars over and over.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this but I've been re-reading Orwell's 1984 recently.  This time, it seems a lot scarier because so much of the behavior described in the book is what we're seeing from the MAGA heads now.  Here's something I bookmarked:

In a way, the world-view of the Party imposed itself most successfully on people incapable of understanding it.  They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening.

Orwell even pointed out that "the Party" liked to meddle in sex.  It was just for procreation.  If people found pleasure and joy in sex and relationships, they would have less energy to devote to hate -- and the Party was all about hate.

Right now, this all sounds uncomfortably familiar.

:my_confused: So who wants to tell her which party is actually in favor of more medical assistance, and how her state policies play into it?  This charming lady probably hates the ACA "Obamacare" and thinks socialism is bad, too, so let's tell her about those also.

Oh, never mind - There is no getting through to these people. Maybe she thinks Trump himself is going to pay for her surgery.

It's like the interview with the northeastern fisherman recently who was saying since Trump is such a great guy for business it would benefit him, an independent fisherman.

Er. Trump is not a great business man...and um....he does not care about small time independent fishermen.

What world do these people think they live in!?

I had somebody post on a financial forum I follow recently asking "hey since all these billionaires and banking companies are promoting crypto now, does that change how you feel about it? Does it make it seem like a good investment now?"

and I'm like. NO. the fact that billionaires are promoting it - just means that the billionaires see some way to get profit out of regular people buying it. Whatever billionaires are into is not something I will benefit from. And the way they got to be billionaires is by scamming everybody else into giving their share of whatever to them.  Wake up! Nobody promotes anything out of the goodness of their hearts

The latest from Jon McNaughton:

Quote

“Trump Stampede”

Amidst the tumultuous storm, lightning rips through the sky like heavens fury, and a new painting unfurls itself upon the canvas of American history. A stampede of angry donkeys, their mocking brays reverberating through the very bones of the land. The US Capitol looms in the darkness, a once unassailable bastion of hope, now a haunting witness to a brazen dereliction of duty and lawlessness. Amid the torrential downpour, Trump rides unwavering, clutching the American flag, its defiant stars and stripes a beacon of unbroken spirit. Against the stampede's fury, he leads the charge, a resolute commander in a storm-borne revolution to Make America Great Again.

Inspired by Fredrick Remington’s painting of the old west, I strive to capture a time in American history that is without precedent. A sitting President wields his political powers to unseat a leading rival in a presidential election. The people will never forget and will always remember the courage of those who lived at this time.

Jon, you dipshit, it was Trump's people who turned the capitol from "a once unassailable bastion of hope" into "a haunting witness to a brazen dereliction of duty and lawlessness."

Oh, and lest we worry that Jon will starve this winter - calendars are up for sale:

As usual, with McNaughton there are just so many questions.  What are all those black things sticking out of his back?  Strings?  Ends of black zip ties?  And what the hell kind of hat is he wearing?  It looks like a fisherman's hat but maybe it's just his hair melting in a weird way.  And where is the rest of Trump?  Jon chopped off about 100 pounds of him.  I guess that was to make sure it looked like the horse could carry him.

Also, I'm not clear on the danger of a stampede of donkeys.  Were they trying to get into the building?  It looks like lightning hit it so I don't think they'd be interested in entering if it's on fire.

I think I'm just going to call this painting "Trump and his Army of Asses".

I'd guess the latter.

I'd actually wondered that myself, but cut it out of my previous post. All I could think of was the Gloucester fisherman statue:

Dontcha know? All democrats are dangerous.

Trump is going in the same direction as they are. But, besides being a nod to the original painting, I guess that's supposed to make us think that he's going to get in front of them and bravely head them off.

I think Donald would be scared shitless on a moving horse...which could explain the missing 100 pounds.

Also, how can the horse be kicking up all that dust in a torrential rainstorm?

LOL all these paintings are hilarious. Trump won't even step out of his limo if it's raining, much less jump on a horse.

I just cannot understand these people. They seem to think that Trump loves them, wants them to succeed, will help them out (while not helping out the "undeserving" people the democrats want to help), and is one of them. Meanwhile Trump is very open and clear that he considers himself above them, has no use for them beyond their votes and their money, and wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire. He did literally nothing to help them while he was president (other than fail to entirely destroy the ACA). And now, if he somehow managed to get elected again (Rufus help us), he'd stomp them all down quicker than they could say "lock her up"!

It'd be one thing if they were honest, and said "Trump's a rich bastard who wouldn't bother to look at me on the street, and is against anything that might help improve my life. But because his policies hurt people I hate, I'm willing to suffer myself just to make sure they suffer more."

But it's not. They're like, "Trump helps us, the common man!" when the reality is that Trump helps Trump, and any of his millionaire buddies he thinks might help him.

They're all like little children who, when sent to their room for misbehaving, imagine they are really the royal child of an unimaginably wealthy king somewhere, sent away for safekeeping, who very soon will be rescued and returned to their life of infinite wealth and privilege. Any day not. It'll happen. They'll be ultra-wealthy. And when they are, they won't want to have to share any of that money, so they better vote for what's good for the ultra-wealthy now, so when their ship comes in they will be able to hoard all their wealth, too.

Any day now. Right now they can't afford necessary health care and are struggling to put food on the table especially after buying up the Trump hats and flags and sending him donations toward his campaign, not to mention travelling to go see him speak. But it'll all be OK once they are rich. Someday. Sooner or later.

It's literally madness.

It's cognitive dissonance that's been spoon fed to them on a daily basis for years now, by the Fox News propaganda machine. They want to believe in a knight in shining armor (on a horse, surrounded by stampeding donkeys) who will come to save them from everything they've been told they should fear.

Is it madness, if you've been indoctrinated?

I blame the lottery.  Of course, everything has gotten worse since Fox and since people can pick and choose their own version of truth on the internet.  The problem was that states needed more money and decided they couldn't raise taxes.  Instead, we ended up with lotteries and scratch-offs with low odds of winning and most of the money going to the state.  In the beginning, it was earmarked for specific areas like education.  Now, it mostly goes into the general funds.

People think that they'll win the lottery and, per the Republicans, they'll not be over taxed for it.  They'll live like kings -- or like Trump.  After all, he talks a lot like they do but he just has money.  Once they have money too, they'll be just like him.  Moreover, he hates the same people they do.  They have no intention of giving to the poor, housing the homeless, or feeding hungry children once they have a fortune of their own.  Those people can just buy lottery tickets and take their chances.

The federalist society decided to go after Taylor Swift after her voter registration campaign signed up a boatload of young voters. I don't think they understand the passion her hardcore fans have.
