Murder charges for fundie parents

I've worked at a company where they fired people for getting arrested on a DUI, first offense. It was the getting arrested that did it. Even though the guy ended up not going to jail, and he never missed work due to the arrest, he got fired because he got arrested in the first place. So if a small time bank was that strict, I don't know what a huge multi-national corporation such a Boeing would do.

Huh. I work for a university, and one of my co-workers actually lost his license for six months because of too many DUIs, and he didn't get fired. I guess it depends.

I was thinking of it in terms of whether Boeing would have grounds to fire Williams *now*, and I think not. He's been arrested and charged, but he pleaded innocent and hasn't been convicted of anything. He's probably got enough collateral to get out on bail so he can go back to work.

I am disturbed that some of the kids are fostered by family members. I hope that the family there are with are not religious wackos.

Off-topic: I just noticed that I've become blanket trained! I can feel the natural childlike curiosity draining out of my body already . . .

Every time a Follower of Christ is charged in the death of one of their kids the remaining children are sent to other family members. In the case of the FOC they are all members of the FOC. This just pizzes me off to no end. Courts in Oregon do place restrictions on the fostering families that do include medical care and frequent site visits.

I thought the older children, like the teens, were with family members and the younger ones, and the adopted son, were with foster families.

I think he deserves all kinds of bad things to happen to him, but can your employer fire you for something you do in your own home, on your own time? The only reason I could see this leading to him being fired is if he gets sent to jail for a good long time and therefore can't show up at work.

I worked for a federal program, and if I got a DUI I'd be fired because the insurance on the federal vehicles won't let you drive, and a big part of my job was driving/travel, so I wouldn't be able to perform job functions.

There was also a clause about firing for embarassment- the HR lady gave an example of a domestic violence case that was very public and very very awful that involved a male employee. He was fired because he was an embarassment to the program.

Well this guy is an embarrassement for Boeing. And the rest of humanity.

Murdering his child could hardly be considered doing something "in your own home, on your own time" like watching porn or sending out mailers for the green party or something. He's charged with murder, for heavens sake.

An employer can fire a person for not showing up for work.

He has to have already missed significant days of work during the time he has (so far) been incarcerated.

Pending felony charges are enough to get you put on a leave of absence at my work. If you are found guilty of those felony charges, its an immediate dismissal.

They better fire this asshole!

Ol' Larry will have to cash out his Boeing 401k to make bond and pay for attorneys. Or else he will have to tell "Gramps" where the silver bars are buried on his property...either way, I bet he is mad.

I don't know if they have bail bondsmen in Washington state like here in TX. Here, they write the bond for you if you give them a certain percentage (usually 10%). They are responsible for you if you abscond so you have to check in with them, or they come get you. They are not the most savory of characters...

For us it's " bringing the name of [x] into disrepute". But it means the same thing. If you do something which associates the place you work with serious criminal shit, not even the best rep in the world can save your job.

I found this site while looking for more information about the Pearls. We were given their book when our first child was born, and promptly put it aside. I think I read to the suggestion that I pull my baby's hair, and decided that it was batshit insane.

However, the disturbing links to dead children made me want to dig deeper to understand just what the Pearls were teaching.

My firm conclusion is that the advice to break the will of a child with attachment issues is what has led to these deaths. No child should be broken, but most will "submit" fairly quickly to "training" outwardly. Children with attachment disorders will never be "broken". The Pearl followers simply hit more and more, because they believe that they must "win". They are calm and methodical, and they think they are saving the child.

It really scares me to no end. Until Mike Pearl is held accountable, we will continue to see dead children.

Welcome. I basically found this site because of the death of Lydia Schatz, who was another pearl victim.

On the nursing biters/hair pulling - most moms I know just say something like "no bitey the boobie" and delatch the baby for awhile. Since a healthy baby wants to and enjoys nursing, they figure out pretty quickly that "bitey" equals "no boobie" and quit biting. Anyone who'd pull a baby's hair is indulging in an adult temper tantrum.

Another technique for biting nurslings is to (gently) smush their face into your breast so they can't breathe through their nose. This makes them open their mouth and release the breast.

They can't get any milk by biting, so I generally just took it as a sign that they weren't hungry any more and ended the nursing session. There was no need to hurt them.

My son went through a biting phase, not when nursing but at other times, when he was two. I'd tell him "No bites - you can kiss me instead." That's another thing that punitive-discipline types don't seem to realize: it's much easier to substitute a behavior you like for one you don't like, instead of just trying to make the behavior you don't like stop cold.

Yeah, they don't have any concept of positive reinforcements.

When my kids bite I just say "Ouch, that hurts mommy. No biting" and remove them from the breast. They usually go right back to nursing without any more problems. If they keep biting (very rare) it's usually because they're just playing, so we stop nursing and go do something fun. No hair pulling required!

One thing that bothers me about these fundie adoptions is that the parents do not allow for differences in culture and language. Who really knows how much English Lydia Schatz and Hana Williams understood. At best English was a second language and at worst these children may not have understood what the parents said. Add to that the problem that the adopted boy was deaf. Could he even lip read English? Even food could be a problem. A child from Africa may have problems with an American diet like lactose sensitivity that would make eating American food difficult. It seems that parents like the Schatzs and the Williams expected their adopted children to turn into perfect American children and refused to address these issues. I remember reading in a mainstream magazine about an adoptive parent who had a child from China who would not eat the family's food. Did it ever occur to the parent to make the child food that was familiar to the child and feed it to her. No.

Welcome and kudos for being a sane parent researching things before instituting them! I hope that you share your knowledge with the fools friends that gave you the book!
