Revenge Porn

Revenge Porn has been in the news a lot recently because it seems that prosecutors are finally starting to do something about it. Unfortunately it's only big-time offenders, but it's a start!

This woman is a former private investigator, so when her daughter's picture showed up on one of the sites, she presented a foot-thick folder of evidence of the perpetrator and his other victims to the FBI. Bonus: No Slut Shaming her daughter!

Here is a radio interview update. Hunter Moore (isanyoneup.com) was arrested due to her investigation.

Interview from 2011 with Hunter Moore. Surprisingly, he sounds like an ass.

And then today I saw this: http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/20 ... ising.html

Another website runner, Kevin Bollaert, was arrested in California for extortion.

A friend of mine recently posted something to Facebook about this case.

Totally bonks.

And then I got sucked down the rabbit hole looking up "Hunter Moore," and was slapped in the face with wave upon wave of disgust. First, mostly because of Hunter Moore and his troglodyte asshat followers. (To get a good sense of this guy, check out the Rolling Stone article on him: http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/new ... t-20121113).

But then just simply because of the society in which we live, and how it continues to construct this "Good Girl/Bad Girl" dichotomy. Those poor women. So disgusting to think that they (and others like them) were in deathly fear of losing their kids and losing their jobs because ZOMG!!11eleventy teh boobiez!

If it were a man, I doubt the fear or potential to lose so much would even be there. :angry-banghead:

Oh, and I also discovered this Hunter piece of slime lives in the next town over from me.

ETA: The link to the Rolling Stone article and grammary fixes.

Wow. This is insane. I've heard of this guy before--I think I saw him on Anderson?--but I'm still reading all your links, and the links they lead to.

I also agree with EyeQueue--I can't see why women should fear for their livelihoods and families because of a naked picture. It's also disturbing how many of these men think the women "deserve" this.

Glad to see this loser getting arrested. However, I'm still bothered by the fact that women can lose their jobs or custody of their kids if there is a nude pic posted online. Revenge Porn won't go away so long as slut shaming is OK in our society.

This is interesting because the guy(s) who run that cheaterville site (which I assume you are talking about since you mention Hunter Moore), also run bullyville, I believe.

Bullyville is the site which Kate Gosselin was trying to get to take down her haters over the summer and they said they were going to file a class action lawsuit against the haters, getting the fans all in a tizzy about the money they were going to win from the haters or something like that.

Also, I believe, the attorney that filed Kate's recent lawsuit was the attorney for one of the BV owners when he sued the other guy (I think Hunter Moore, who "lost" the suit when he didn't show up for court. BV guy..McGibney, I think his name is...calls this a win, but really he won by default, so I'm not sure it's truly a win.

That attorney is apparently good with SLAPP lawsuits (which is essentially what Kate's suit was, IMO).

This is all from the dark recesses of my memory so may be a little fuzzy on the exact details, but I think it's all pretty close.

I wonder what would happen if we changed the law, so that the subject in a photo, not the photographer, has the rights to the image?

What if the law said that you cannot post or host any nude image, unless there was proof of a signed release from the subject proving that they were over 18, mentally competent, and were releasing any rights to the image and allowing it to be freely distributed? You know, took another stab at rape culture by actually showing that consent matters. [There could be an exception for genuine news stories not meant for sexual purposes.]

Your first suggestion would be disastrous, unless it could somehow be limited to nude pictures. So much news relies on photos and video.

Your second suggestion sounds much better to me.

What about normal porn? Who watches hundreds of millions of videos/photos to make sure the law is actually enforced? Nude images especially are copied and distributed so quickly it's unbelievable. I like your idea, but it's the same old problem with the internet, things like this are impossible to control.

Oh HAL NAW! If something like that happens to me, I'm taking the son of a bitch down with me. So far nothing like that has happened to me. This is my list dos and don't:

* I never take or let anyone else take nude pictures of me.

* I never allow myself to be taped having sex.

* My WiFi is secured with a random password.

* My laptop and tablet are password protected with random password.

* My email account is protected with a random password.

* I keep my windows, android system, web browser, an antivirus programs updated.

Now if somebody is able to get through all of that, I'll track down the bastard with help from my employer and the sheriff's department.

The articles said that 20%(?) of the pictures were women's heads Photoshopped onto someone else's naked body.

Of course, it's really, really hard to control anything spread around the internet - but the current state of the law makes it almost impossible.

Just read about the nightmarish saga of Erin Andrews: http://content.usatoday.com/communities ... q9nNuKmb31

In response to RosyDaisy - Erin Andrews didn't "let" anyone take her nude photo. She was in her own hotel room, and a creepy stalker videotaped her through the peephole. He then posted the images online. The crazy part is that she couldn't get the website to remove videos of her, because she didn't own the copyright! The perv was the legal owner of the images, and she would have to buy the rights from him in order to sue for copyright infringement.

Lack of full consent in porn IS an issue. Linda Lovelace was abused and coerced into making Deep Throat. Viral images taken of women and girls - often without their consent - ruin lives. Yes, it would mean more regulatory effort and paperwork, but documenting informed consent is standard in other industries, and I'd hope that legitimate players in the adult entertainment industry would see this as a chance to show that they use professionals who are freely consenting adults.
