One of my family members linked to this. On facebook, I posted a link to the court documents and still my family obnoxiously supports her.

I'm almost tempted to start a..".Paula Deen isn't freaking innocent, you dumbasses facebook page."

The comments on that page will page you stabby. What the hell is wrong with my ignorant family?

This seriously makes me sick

Claud McGaughey you find me 1 person (black or white born b4 1960 that hasn't used the n word

I was born before 1960 and I have never used the n word. My parents would never allow it and I never allowed it in my home. I did live in Alabama for 3 years and heard it sometimes but most of the older people there used the term colored.

"What Southerner has never said the N word..."

*Raises hand* This one. Call me a liar all you want, but I can barely bring myself to think the word, much less say it, it makes me cringe.

I shouldn't go to this FB page, but it's like the car wreck I saw this morning up by the 7-11 on the corner near my house. It was pretty bad, and I couldn't help staring. So off I go. :?

I was raised in the south and I actually don't think I've ever heard anyone casually use the n word (I've only heard it in quotes, in talking about the word itself, or in a similar context). I've met plenty of racists, but they all seem to know that word is off-limits (maybe some people use it around like-minded people, but never around me). It's definitely a shock to see people acting like it's no big deal.

I'm not a Southerner, but there's plenty of racism in the North. That being said, I've never used the n-word.

I don't care for Paula Deen, at all. I'm one of the meanies who got pissed when she revealed she had Type II diabetes solely for personal gain and profit from drug companies.

The deposition is pretty damning and can be found here: http://www.scribd.com/fullscreen/148813 ... share=true

Some greatest hits?

Page 20-21 where she defends her brother's "sense of humor" after he admitted to permitting racist speech and pornography in the work place.

Page 21 where she defends his "off-color jokes". (As an aside, what's most egregious here is not necessarily that he told the jokes, it's that he told them while in a position of authority. He's running the fucking business and running his mouth at the same time. That's not okay. Paula doesn't seem to understand that.)

Page 26, answering questions about her brother putting pornographic image on the table during a manager's meeting. His behavior wasn't inappropriate, no ma'am.

I could go on, but it makes my head hurt and my blood pressure sky rocket.

Paula Deen doesn't think she's done anything wrong. Her rabid fans don't think she did anything wrong. That's probably what disturbs me the most about all of this.

Another case of the cult of celebrity. The famous get away with a hell of a lot.

That's it in a nutshell. Why do we excuse behaviour in celebs that we wouldn't tolerate in the people we know? :?

I can't wrap my head around the whole cult of celebrity. I remember when Mel Gibson had his Jew hating and sugart*ts comments blow up and can't figure why anyone would want to work with him or see his movies. There's always someone like Joe Esterhause that will work with just about anyone. And there are consumers who have to buy The Passion because they expect to get a blessing out of it. It confuses me. This could just be the cold medicine fogging my brain. I have a nasty cold.

I agree that Deen doesn't deserve positive feedback for her actions, but perhaps it would be more prudent to nuke the names captioned in the first post? I strongly disagree with their opinions, but don't believe they deserve hate mail from internet strangers for them simply because their names are given here.

Paula Deen isn't a bit sorry for speaking & thinking the way she does but she's awful, awful sorry she got caught doing so.

Her leghumpers on that FB page are disgusting.

I think you are being very considerate. However, when they put their names out there on facebook IMO they are fair game. If you don't want people disagreeing with you, don't post.

And this is also true. It might just be the fact that I'm unclear as to what's okay to post in terms of real names on Free Jinger. There was an issue awhile back where a poster got in trouble with admin for posting names of FJ members from Facebook. I also sometimes see Facebook names blacked out when someone here takes a screencap of something on Facebook, for example, anything written by Ex-Gay Greg. On the other hand, Josh's instagram has plenty of followers that post, and their names aren't blacked out, and surely some of them use their real names. And also, lizziesmom, as you said, these people did put it out on the internet for public viewing.

Hmm, perhaps I just need to re-evaluate the situation and learn where the boundary lies, if there is one.

I apologize if I came across as handslappy to Debrand or anyone else, I didn't mean to be that way.

[*]The 'everyone has said/used the word' argument/defense is so overplayed. I don't use the word. I'm black and I don't refer to friends/family like that either.

I'm not surprised by this either. PD had never struck me as a classy lady.

R&M : You didn't come across as handslappy at all. I hope I wasn't abrupt in my reply. People who put all kinds of personal, political, and opinionated things on Facebook and then get all pissy when people reply to them with disagreement or opposing viewpoints are among my pet peeves.

Oh not at all, I thought you made an excellent point. :) I think it's great when people have strong or opposing views on Facebook, and they definitely should be able to discuss them. I was just wondering if there was any rule about the posting of real names here that I should be familiar with.

When Michelle Duggar became pregnant with Jubilee, I posted a rather strong opinion about how she could be risking her life after getting through such a dangerous pregnancy with Josie. A fundie-lite friend on my page got upset and deleted me, no disussion wanted on her part.

Being a lawyer, I had to read the deposition transcript. Not only does she not believe she's done anything wrong but neither has her darling baby bubba. Instead, she's throwing 'her dear, friend' (and the most moral man she's ever met per he biography from several years ago) Karl Schunacher (also her bookeeper) under the bus. She describes him in her deposition as "the most judgmental person I know." I wish I could find his deposition and that of brother Bubba, because I suspect Karl's testimony is favorable to the plaintiff and not Paula and company

Like you point out, her brother is a part of this mess. Not sure why he isn't tagged along with Paula in all the press?? And, in my business, cursing is not allowed either!

It is a good point about not posting names so I don't think that you were being hand slappy. Maybe it is an issue that we should discuss. However, if you click on the links, you see the names anyway. I'm not certain which way to go with this but I'm glad you brought it up.

Paula was talking about planning a wedding "old southern style" and used the N word - Horrors - Frankly my dear, I'm getting tired of being "downtrodden" Why is it okay to have a Black History Month and yet when we want to honor our Southern Heritage by raising Confederate Flag - we are accused of being Racist"?

My mother grew up in the South and never EVER used the N word and taught us never to either. I don't care what prompted Deen to use it, it's just never okay. If you're quoting someone, you should insinuate. She deserves what she got. She is not innocent. And one of my friends (who just happens to be African American and from the South) said on her FB page that Paula has been stealing food ideas from her culture for years. Something to think about.

That's the trouble in this country; we worship celebrity too much.

Fuck Paula Deen....and fuck these people for supporting her. Old Biddy got what she deserved.

First, it's filmed in what appears to be a nail salon. Interesting choice.

Second, she mentions HERSELF first. She's caused pain to HERSELF, she's pulling HERSELF together, she's spent the best of 24 years to help HERSELF and others. Me, me, meeeeee!

And just for the record, my mother is 78 years old, raised in SC, and has never used the N word. Her mother's SC hometown (population 900) still boasts a white funeral home and a black funeral home on separate sides of town (I wish I were kidding). But shame on Paula Deen for taking advantage of the public and cooking up a storm of food on national television based on a culture she doesn't even begin to understand or respect and harboring racism. Grrrrr.

She got what she deserved. I just hope she invested well because she offended a lot of Americans and she's going to need an income stream.

Lots of people are jumping the gun everywhere (including the Food Network). In America, we are innocent until proven guilty. I read Paula's legal deposition last evening. Yes, she admits using the "n" word in the past; and yes, she is remorseful. However, what the media has not shared with the public is another employees role in this mess; a man named Karl S. (I cannot remember the spelling ). His degree of participation with Lisa Jackson and the Deen/Heirs family has not been revealed to the public. I only read Paula's side of the story concerning him; I'm not sure if he has made a deposition, yet. There's always more to a story than meets the eye; especially initially! Stay tuned.

There is more than just using the "n" word in the past. Her justification of using it in the 80's is enough to get her fired. I was living in the south during the 80's, people knew better then. My dad is older than Paula, he did use the word when he was very small, but he knew by at least the early 70's that using it was wrong. Hell yes he knew by the 80's not to use it when you got mad at a black person.
