2018: Hurricanes and Tropical Storms

Just located New Bern on google maps.  This is just the beginning; New Bern is at the confluence of the Trent and Neuse Rivers; the Neuse River at New Bern widens out to be more like a bay and the Trent River widens there also.  The are predicted to have a 10-foot storm surge combined with continuing rain causing the rivers to flood.  Scary situation.

Stay safe, y'all.  So grateful extended family on the coast decided to evacuate early and are safely inland.

Have been seeing a bit about Super Typhoon Mangkhut set to cross the northern Philippines, then across Viet Nam and into China.  Holy crap -- it makes Flo look a baby sister.  It's 900 km (600 miles) across and currently has up to 160-180 mph winds.

Mangkhut is the Typhoon that passed near us (direct hit on our neighbor island Rota). It was only a Cat 1/Cat 2 storm then and still did a ton of damage here at the time. We have some good friends in the Philippines so we are watching the storm closely and praying for them. They have already been hit with a few other nasty storms this wet season, so it doesn't take much to cause a whole lot of damage.

I hope everyone is staying safe and dry!

Second good morning! Just got the 2 younger kiddos off to school. Hope everyone is still safe, dry, and holding tight. My prayers are with you today!

Yeah, I recently read an article about how disaster plans developed by cities and such tend not to include people with disabilities (people with limited mobility, autism, etc). I’m sorry that riding it out is your best option. Sending you lots of good thoughts!
If anyone needs a laugh, check out this erm - graphic graphic from the official National Hurricane Updates Facebook page. Then read the comments. I have no idea how no one caught this very obvious issue before publishing it.

Yeah mind, gutter, remove.

Seriously, I hope everyone down there stays safe.

Just read about the Waffle House Index.  It's a thing!  Even The Economist knows about it! They explain about it here:   Waffle House Index

That is an interesting way to measure the fallout of a disaster! During Hugo I don't remember Waffle House but I do remember a local gas station/convenience store being open with flashlights and solar calculators!

Here near Charlotte, I woke up to sunny blue skies with puffy clouds, but as I headed east into the city the clouds got heavier and the wind was picking up. We're getting outer edges of Florence, but it's moving so slowly we shouldn't get the worst until tomorrow. Prayers for those on the coast - the longer it lingers over land the better it is for us, but the worse it is for them! I hope it starts breaking up at some point very soon.

Good morning, everyone! Checking in from Virginia Beach. So far nothing but gusty winds and occasional light rain. I don't think we're going to get much more than that--well, we're expecting several inches of rain before it's all over, but nothing like in NC and SC--but we will get some storm surge. I'm in Zone C, though, and we have never had water in the house in all the years we've lived here, so it won't affect us. We live near some neighbourhoods that were badly damaged by Matthew in 2016, though, so I'm really worried about them.

The winds aren't supposed to gust higher than 40-something mph, so I think my big tree will stay put.

Stay safe, everyone! :group-hug:

The house of extended family who evacuated could receive up to 40" rainfall total.  They have never flooded in the past. However,  I'm recalling an instance in Central  Texas maybe 17 years ago where the upper reaches of the Guadalupe River and tributaries received up to 25 inches of rain in about 24 hours.  The Guadalupe flooded to over five miles across in some of the towns downstream. Parts of town were flooded that were miles away from the river. If I'm recalling correctly, this was Oct. 1998.  Just saying, you can be miles away from a river or a creek and still be flooded when the water has nowhere to go.  Just ask Houston and the rest of the Texas Gulf coast.

Right now it is eerily calm! No wind, no rain. Just very cloudy.

Hi, I'm mostly a lurker (OK, like almost entirely) but are you and your family OK? Sending good thoughts your way.

Checking in at 1:17 Newfoundland Standard Time from this lovely rock in the North Atlantic. I hope everyone in the path of Florence are safe. I've been watching the coverage and it looks, scary especially in New Bern.

I've always been prone to the Old Hag (Sleep paralysis) and I was having a non old hag dream but it felt like something was on my chest. I woke up suddenly and was terrified to move, I saw eyes looking down at me and I screamed. Loud and proud. It was my cat...how did I forget that I have cats?

Everyone else as well.

I'd get you some peanut butter, too.

Checking in here. It's cloudy, with a little wind.I live over 40 miles, inland, but I am still worried about the possibility of flooding.I was lucky during Matthew,we had  so much rain, but no flooding.I did see my neighbors' ground become so saturated, that trees became uprooted, and fell over.We chose not to go to a shelter because we just feel more comfortable at home...plus we have 7..yes, 7 cats, and we'd never leave them behind. It's supposed to start raining tomorrow and Sunday.

It's super strange. So many of our clients and tech people and others are closing early today to prepare for the storm. Our phones are quiet. Us? We're here. No plans to leave early. Luckily we are closed on weekends, as I'm sure we'd be expected to be here.

So far still just lots of wind, here. I mean I get it, there's nothing going on right now here, and won't be until tomorrow. I'm hoping even then it's just rain. No matter what happens, if the power is on at work, I'll have to be there!

When I first read that there would be a hurricane in America, my next thought was: I hope that all american FreeJingers will be safe. I don't really know you but I really feel for you.

And fun story - our highchair has a mesh basket under the seat and a pea fell into it least night when daughter sent her food flying. My dog, who is the greatest dog ever, tried to get it through the mesh, rather than going over the top of the basket. I took pity on her after a minute or two and tossed it to her, but it was pretty funny.

Jill Rodrigues channeled Say-un to manifest the pea-catcher.  She is mean.  May Rufus bless your dog by having your daughter drop more goodies.

Miller-Coors is gonna be sending some canned drinking water to the area.

Quote

As Hurricane Florence bears down on North and South Carolina, with its leading edge already flooding barrier islands along the coast, company known primarily for beer is sending a necessity along to those in its path: water.

MillerCoors is donating 200,000 cans of water from its brewery in the Town of Elkton to communities about to be hit by Florence.

The donation is being made in partnership with the American Red Cross and area food banks, and it will be distributed at Red Cross and community shelters.

"We hope this water donation provides some relief and comfort to residents and first responders in Hurricane Florence's path," said Karina Diehl, MillerCoors Senior Director for National Community Affairs. "It's a MillerCoors priority to do our part in helping the communities where our consumers, employees and distributors call home."

All they had to do was take the piss out and now they have drinking water.

Seriously, though, that was good that they're doing this for residents in the affected areas.

*waves* I'm the proprietor of the Cartmann99 Home For Wayward Cats! We had two or three cats for years, but last September a nearly blind cat picked our yard to have her kittens in, and then another cat showed up at the back door with a big abscess on his face.

We did manage to find homes for two of mama cat's kittens, and we ended up adopting her, her remaining kittens, and the kitty who had the abscess on his face. That brought us up to six kitties. ? The vet bills over the last year have been crazy, but we sure do love the little boogers.

@melon, thank you and everyone else who is dealing with this storm for checking in with us!  I'm thrilled to hear that everyone who has checked in so far is doing okay. Hopefully, the others will be able to check in soon to let know how they are doing.

@Nikedagain? I'm in Wilmington, sounds like you are as well. As soon as I figure out how to message on here I'll send you my phone number just in case.

To everyone else: hello! Obvs it takes a hurricane to make it necessary for me to chime in. I'm already bored, so keep the entertainment coming! The eye passed over us a few hours ago, so I'll need at least 5-8 more hours of entertainment ?

Things won't really start to happen here until tomorrow afternoon or evening when the rain will begin.  It's partly sunny right now with a bit more breeze than usual and the clouds have been moving south or southwest  since Wednesday.

My husband was annoyed as usual by the official warnings being "too dire".  He doesn't seem to realize that even a six-foot storm surge is nothing to mess with and that the coasts take a looong time to evacuate.  Better safe than sorry.  He's the guy on the roads when we have have a warning from the DMV not to drive when the roads are snowy and/or icy.  He think he can handle them because he grew up in Maryland.  Sorry, that doesn't make you an expert about driving in snow.

My daughter in Columbia said that she felt a bit like a cruise director.  She had to make sure that her hotel had enough games and other things to do to keep the evacuees entertained.

Everyone, once again, if you will be online tonight anytime between 12am -8am ET, please pop by here and leave a message for those dealing with Florence. I'll be checking in throughout the night again if anybody wants to chat.

Windy and cloudy here. It looks like the rain will start tomorrow and be awful all weekend. A good chunk of NC is going to have issues with flooding.  Be safe everyone! I don't live in an area that floods, so my only concern is trees. Luckily we did get the really scary trees cut, but there are a couple trees I'm a bit worried about.
