Embattled Rep. Jeremy Durham, accused of sexual misconduct toward at least 22 women and still under investigation by state and federal officials, was expelled Tuesday from the Tennessee House of Representatives during a special legislative session.

Republicans and Democrats joined together to oust the 32-year-old Franklin Republican, voting 70-2 to cast Durham out after more than an hour of discussion to approve the first legislative expulsion since 1980, and only the second since the Civil War. The House needed 66 votes to remove him.

House Speaker Beth Harwell, who was emotional in a plea to colleagues earlier in the day to protect the identifies of Durham's accusers, said, "I'm very pleased that the House made the decision it did today. This was good for the taxpayers of the state. It was good for the victims of the state."

Durham appeared Tuesday to defend himself before the House. He again noted that no formal complaint had been filed against him and that he's never been charged with a crime.

The vote was 70-2.

70-2?  That is fantastic.  I wonder why these guys hang on in the face of mountains of evidence and total lack of support from their colleagues.

If I had to guess they don't want to lose face in front of their family values type benefactors and their churches.

I just looked and it was a year ago that one tea party individual in Michigan (Rep. Cindy Gamrat) got expelled from her seat, and the vote was like 91-12.  Her luuvvveeer fellow State Rep. Todd Courser decided to jump before he got pushed and resigned before he could get expelled.

There are currently multiple instances of sexual malfeasance in various state legislatures  -- viewing porn, sexual infidelity, and worse and the perps are not willing to resign.  After all, they apologized to everyone including & especially god, so they are good as new and maybe better, right?

The Courser-Gamrat affair gets super high marks for bizarro and juiciness.  FJ has covered it in detail here:  http://www.freejinger.org/topic/23950-fake-gay-sex-lies-and-audiotape-oh-my/?page=3#comment-1241741
