In Which I Snark on The Buttercream Gang

Should wholesome videos aimed at pre-teens really use " gang" as part of the name of their cute little group? I understand that way back there was the " our gang" series, and the Apple Dumpling Gang, but you would think in the 90s they would have cAlled it a club or something. :?

I'll check out the link when I'm off work.

Ha! A least you weren't scared of them though... Your childhood reaction was at least somewhat normal.

oh well that was because we only had the cassette tapes. :D that donut is genuinely frightening.

I've never heard of The Buttercream Gang. My childhood VBS was generally spent watching McGee and Me! Anyone else remember this? A boy with a cartoon conscience (I think that's what it was at least).

oh gosh another one for super bad acting lol. But all the boy's cool inventions were pretty interesting, and wondering how in the world they got a cartoon into a real cereal box, etc. etc. No kid these days would think that filming technique was anything special.

It's explained later that the name "Buttercream Gang" is inherited. I'm not sure when it's inherited from exactly, but the really old storekeeper will tell them "I was a buttercreamer too when I was your age."

I specifically remember the donut growing when you put him in water, and he told the kids to help him because he was growing too fast and he would explode, or something like that... and the idea of a growing donut just made me burst into tears.

Funny. My cousins weren't allowed to watch The Lion King, but The Donut Man, which was WAY SCARIER, was no problem.

I swear, sometimes adults are WEIRD. (Yes, I am one, so I can say this, haha.)

Part 4 is up. Highlights of this Snarkisode (like, snark episode, get it? haha) are:

1. Scotty and the Gang are the town's ambulance, apparently.

2. The origin of The Buttercream Gang is explained

3. We are introduced to one of my favorite characters

I didn't write much today because I went dancing with friends, and then afterwards while waiting for the bus someone decided to test their canister of pepper spray. I promptly stopped breathing and ran into the nearby shop, which happens to be my work place. My boss gave me some of his kale shake, which was disgusting, but opened my airway, so I can't complain. Allowed me to stay till the bus came.

I'm just happy to be breathing normally again.

Next time we will be introduced to Scotty's Romantic Love Interest who I actually kinda like because she hands Scotty his ass, at times.

I never saw this movie, I read a synopsis of the movie and thanked me lucky stars that I didn't see it. It sounds awful and the title sound like a gay porno.

Oh the memories. We had The Buttercream Gang and the sequel, as well as a ton of other FFF films. The two I remember most were about a sibling group that goes on the run together after their mom dies because they don't want to be split up and a brother and sister who get accidentally left behind in a ghost town on their way to camp and wind up witnessing to some old man who's been living there as a hermit for years. I can't remember the title of either one though. And we had every Donut Repair Club movie they made, and I'm pretty sure all the McGee & Me movies too. In lieu of Disney, because Disney was evil ya know.

Our church used to do a lock in (one for the girls and one for the boys) in the church fellowship hall once a year and show A Thief in the Night and some other post-rapture apocalypse movie to scare us into getting saved, but my mom never let us go. She didn't want us to be scarred by them the way so many other kids were. Looking back, I do appreciate the gesture, even though it didn't prevent me from developing a crippling fear of being left behind.

The kids start singing “you’ve got the right one baby, uh huh, uh huh!â€

Being a good 2 or 3 decades removed from 1992, and one decade removed when I first saw this movie (well, 7 years is close enough to a decade, right?) I don’t get the reference.

After googling, I found this:

and

This commercial was shot in 1995. This movie was shot in 1992. So I’m not sure the connection was 100% but it’s the best I can come up with.

Ironically, I am actually drinking Diet Pepsi right now…. with VODKA in it! Uh huh! Uh huh!

love it! :laughing-rolling:

This brings back memories of my childhood. Our aunt and uncle used to give us FFF movies as Christmas presents. I think my brother and I watched the second Buttercream Gang movie dozens of times. We also had The Last Chance detectives VHSes (which I see is not FFF, but Focus on the Family Films).

Last chance detectives... You'll have to refresh my memory on that one... Is that the one wih the guy named Justin case?

Hahaha yes vodka has been the driving force behind these reviews. I couldn't watch this stuff without it.

I'll see if I can get part 5 up tonight. I'm having a lot of fun with this, so I'm going to go ahead and do more.

I'm semi curious about the sequel, so I might get around to that, but I'd rather do the donut man and McGee and me first. I think I can only tolerate one episode of he do I man though because that do it scares me.

So which episode should it be?

Oh, someone mentioned a buttercream discussion guide? Is there one? If so could you point me to a copy? I'd love to snake on that afterward.

I don't remember much of it, but it was about a group of kids who lived in a town in the middle of a desert. The town's gas station was the "last chance" to buy gas--hence the name. The only episode I really remember was one where they investigated aliens or something. Of course, it wasn't actually aliens (because aliens are going to hell, don't you know).

I would have about 14 or 15 when this came out. I was too old for this type of film and I was never subjected to this masterpiece. I was 14 when I saw Basic Instinct on VHS. My parents didn't have a problem with me watching it. They had problems with movies like Rambo, Friday the 13th, or A Nightmare on Elm Street, etc... So sex in movies wasn't a big deal to them. Violence was a big deal and horror movies were NOT allowed. My parents always told me that there was more than enough horror in the real world, so I didn't need to watch make believe horror.

Part 6, the second half, is now up. I apologize for the tone of the last few posts. I am doing much better today and will likely be able to keep it under control, at least till flyin day when I post an angry rant about airplanes.

Posted part of part 7. However, internet problems are getting in the way. This blog post is much shorter than intended, and I apologize.

Part 8 is up. I wanted to go further, but it was already a long post, plus I really wanted to do the song in a post all by itself, and I haven't had time to sit down and listen to it while writing. Most everything else I at least have basic notes already typed up, but not the song, so, that's going up... sometime.

Anyway, in this edition, we watch the girls in the movie start rumors, start a spy organization, and possibly trespass on private property.

Friday, in lieu of The Buttercream Gang, I am going to do a Robin Williams Movie. I wanted to do Mrs. Doubtfire, but the library is out and Netflix doesn't have it. So, we'll see what I end up finding.

Long time lurker but I had to post. Thank you for talking about The Buttercream Gang! It was one of those movies my parents bought from a sketchy church sale (My family traveled up and down Michigan during my childhood summers in search of yard sales. I can now judge what's at a yard sale based on the yard ornaments). I thought I might have imagined this set of movies because no one I know ever heard of them. I also had the sequel and a VHS of what I think was a home movie re-enactment of the Buttercream Gangs adventures. Super low quality and different actors/locations...it was kind of creepy thinking about it. :?

Thank you so much for telling me :)

Real life kinda got in the way, but there is a new Buttercream post up tonight. It's shorter than normal, because I was trying to focus on the song, though as I said, the lyrics don't make much sense to me no matter how drunk or sober I get. Anyway, I did write at least what was going on.

In this episode, we get to observe exactly the type of gang activity Pete gets involved in! Hint, it's not actually gang related, but WHATEVER.

I've also been doing Hook, as a tribute to Robin Williams. Then I will do other Christian movies of the era. For now, I need to pass out, because that post required waaaaaaaaay too much alcohol.

Movie re-enactment of the buttercream gang? Do you happen to have a copy? If you do I would love to see it. If you don't wish to share it (or simply don't have it) that is ok too.

I do eventually plan to do the sequel to the buttercream gang, but plan to do the donut man first, and then maybe intersperse buttercream sequel with McGee and me.

Also.... I'm like you, I love yard saling, HA!

Part 9 is up.

This time, we get to observe the beginning of the awfulness that is a romance between Scott and Margaret, Scott gets to be the hero, and they vote Pete out of The Buttercream Gang!

Also, I think I'm going to start doing episodes of veggie tales. Buttercream Gang posts go up every Wed, Veggie tales posts every sunday. Or, something....

Unless anybody else has any other suggestions. Once done with the Buttercream Gang, I plan on moving to as many episodes of the donut repair club as my liver can stand, but I wanted to do something more modern as well, something made after 1995.
