The Weird, the Bad, and the Ugly: Name Discussion - Merge

I may be mistaken but I seem to remember a joke in "Men in Tights" about a woman's name being Latrine or something similar.

There was a guy in my residence hall my freshman and sophomore year whose name was Harrison Wiener. He chose to go by the nickname "Harry".

There was a kid with the last name Wiener at a school I worked at. He was so teased about his name. I have to say if it was my last name I'd seriously think of changing it.

We had a Hmong student with the first name Porn. It wasn't a Hmong name and his parents didn't know what it meant. They did go to court and change the name once they realized what it meant in English.

I must admit I haven't read through the whole thread so I don't know whether she's been mentioned already, but I believe Sauntina LaVerle takes the prize for being bestowed with the ugliest name. Poor child.

I may bring down ire on myself, but is she the one with the unfortunate listeners along with the the unfortunate name?

Weiner, is a common Jewish last name. My old skin doctor has that as a madian name, after finding out what it was I understood why she goes by her married name.

Melody is a common name.

I went to school with 3 sisters, whose father was a minister, named Faith, Hope, and Charity.

There's a listing in the MN phone directory for a Cinderella Fay.

I have a friend whose maiden name was Loveless.

Oops, forgot a word: the girl's name is Melody, and her last name is Singer! Melody Singer :?

Not really a weird name exactly since it's more of an odd choice of profession, but I've met a college English professor whose name is Dr. English. Not sure if it was her married name or not, but it's odd.

My sister used to see a psychologist named Dr Brain.

I was watching " Airplane!" the other day and just had to chime in with:

"We've got clearance, Clarence."

"Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?"

I once worked with a Lufituaeb (LOU-FIT-YOU- EBB) Beautiful spelled backwards.

And, the craziest spelling I've ever come across is Ryvvr for "River".

I'd totally forgotten about her. Not going to say if I did or not in the end after researching platforms, but I seriously considered voting for her the first time I saw one of her ads based on her name alone.

Edited because I realize there's a big difference between platforms and playforms.

Now that makes a difference!

I once had the delight of dealing with a woman named Aquanetta.

She would be perfect for Boob.

Thought of another one: Craddoc. He was from a few years ago. I can't find it anywhere, so I have no idea where the name came from.

I once knew a pretentious theatre douche who changed the spelling of his own name from David to Daivd, on the theory that nobody would call him Dave.

Brothers named Captain and Major. Their parents were nut jobs.

That reminds me of a local family with the last name Bishop, they named their son Deacon.

One year I had three Michaela's in one class and they were all spelled different and creatively. The creative spellings drove me crazy when I was teaching.

I knew an Amy in college that had a random "e" on the end--"Amye". No idea.

I taught in a Christian school and had about 90 girls named Bethany in six years. And that is only a slight exaggeration.

Worst names I came across while teaching:

Kyah (boy), Echo, Sunny Dawn, Burgundy Autumn, Blue (not fun for him in the era of "Blue's Clues"), Chap, a family where all seven kids had their dad's name as a middle name--including the girls, Allyssum, a family where all the kids were named after cars--Austin Healey got off easy, but his brother Ferrari Testarossa not so much...

I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Funny.

I quite like Michaela spelt and pronounced properly. I always thought Michaelas' were strong people. So strange how we visualise names.

Porn is a very popular Thai name, it means Blessing.

I knew a family that had an Austin and a Dallas and the mother was pregnant with her third son, but I lost contact with them before he was born. Houston, maybe? El Paso? Laredo? Abilene? lol Weird thing is they were all born in and lived in PA.

I knew a Penelope Candace - Penny Candy. She hated her name.

Doctors with appropriate (or inappropriate!) names:

http://articles.philly.com/2001-02-07/n ... r-practice

I found this article while searching to find out if the dentists named Toothaker I'd heard about for years were real or mythological.

My husband was treated by a surgeon named Dr Benway (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Benway), and fortunately for us, he was lovely and compassionate, unlike the fictional one.

I also had a friend a long time ago whose last name was Green, and one of her sisters was named Emerald.

Side note: what do you all think of a traditional name with an accepted, but somewhat archaic spelling? Full disclosure - I plan to name my gestating blessing Madeleine. Both Madeline and Madelyn rank much higher, and she'll probably always have to spell it. Thoughts?
