Book Club

Some of us have been discussing starting a book club. The discussion starts here viewtopic.php?f=14&t=11550&start=120#p465274

In anticipation of getting started: I'm thinking we should aim for one book a month, perhaps alternating fiction and non-fiction. What do people think about this? Do you have any suggestions to go on a list (to be voted on at later date)? I'll probably wait until we get a list of 15-20 books, then we can vote on them.

For my suggestions:

Fiction: The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman (in honor of finding a body they think is Richard III)

Non-Fiction: Escape by Carolyn Jessop

I have a fiction nomination: The Snares of Death, by Kate Charles.

'Bob Dexter is a loutish evangelical clergyman soon to be installed as pastor of St. Mary the Virgin, a High Church parish in Norfolk. Insisting on being called "Bob" and often referring to himself in the third person, Dexter is set on removing all traces of "idolatry" and Papistry from his new church, causing much consternation among the parishioners.'

ETA - would you like to post this in Chatter, too? I don't know if all of the chatterers come here.

I have read Escape!

Not much of a one for fiction, but Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis would be relevant to our interests ;)

I might put this in chatter as well. This isn't an especially high traffic forum. I would like to participate as long as I can get the book from the library :)

can we also have a classics discussion? Books that are free on project gutenberg- for those who have trouble finding the books in the library

I would love to join in - and if there is anything I can do to get it off the ground, please let me know.

I suggest for non-fiction the Jacyee Dugard book, "A stolen life". Certainly a very interesting read. Fiction - Game of Thrones?

:D I like the suggestion of voting on which books to read each month!

I would participate in a book club (I think.) I've read The Sunne in Splendour, and the rest of S. K. Penman's books and liked them all. I would read it again, since it's been several years.

I'm still interested in the book club, but if it goes to Chatter, I can't participate yet. I'd be interested in either of those books mentioned. I think I have the Penman book downstairs, but would be open to others. Has Kathryn Joyce's "Quiverfull" been mentioned as a possible?

I'm on the fence about asking the mods to move the thread to chatter since there are people interested who don't have 75 posts yet. Would having an announcement over in chatter inviting people to join us be enough?

I think all the books suggested so far are great ideas. I'm intending to wait until we have a longer list, then vote to decide which ones we'll actually read. I'm hoping to get a list for at least three months out to give busy people\slow readers enough time to get the books and read them before the discussion starts.

merrily- feel free to make some classics suggestions, I'll include them along with the rest for the vote.

I think the announcement in Chatter, but the book club in Distractions, would be good. That way more people could participate. I would like to nominate the book I've been reading, "In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible and How it Changed a Nation, a Language, and a Culture" by Alister McGrath.

I have found my people. Books are my "precious" -- shoes, clothes, jewelry, mani-pedis, all those things others spend money on...so I'm a woman who needs Garanimals for adults and a bigger bag to tote books.

If we wanted to read something relevant to FJ, Escape would be good. A good fiction book might be The Rapture of Canaan. I read that one in college and it was kind of my intro to crazy fundie thought, as I wasn't raised around fundies.

Love this! I suggest the unlikely Disciple by Kevin Roose and Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick as non-fiction selections. Also the new Scientology book would be a fun choice.

We should read Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, unless everybody here has already read it. I read it when it was first published and I've been wanting to read it again. It's required reading for those who fear Christian Dominionism, IMO. There's a movie too.

So agree with "Escape." Another good one about an exit from FLDS is "Stolen Innocence." And I heart "The Handmaid's Tale."

One that hasn't been mentioned, but may be a good pick, is "Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith" by John Krackauer. Great read:

Some others are "Dating Jesus," "Jesus Girl," and a really interesting one, "Unorthodoxy," by a former Hasidic.

For fiction, I'm all in for anything.

Great Suggestions Guys! Here's the current list of suggestions; unless someone has an objection I will probably just put them all on a schedule (based on numbers probably two non-fiction then one fiction and repeat). Is a book every two weeks too much? Or would people like one book a month?

Non Fiction:

Escape by Carolyn Jessop http://www.amazon.com/Escape-Carolyn-Je ... 0767927575

A Stolen Life by Jacyee Dugard http://www.amazon.com/A-Stolen-Life-Mem ... 1451629192

Quiverfull by Kathryn Joyce http://www.amazon.com/Quiverfull-Inside ... 807010707/

In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible and How it Changed a Nation, a Language and a Culture by Alister McGrath http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Changed ... 385722168/

The Unlikely Disciple by Kevin Roose http://www.amazon.com/Unlikely-Disciple ... 004Z4M3SE/

Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick http://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Envy-Ordi ... 385523912/

The new Scientology Book? Dev83 is this the one you wanted? The most recent one I could find on amazon was Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought by L. Ron Hubbard (2007) http://www.amazon.com/Scientology-Funda ... 403144206/

Stolen Innocence by Elissa Wall http://www.amazon.com/Stolen-Innocence- ... 061628034/

Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by John Krackauer http://www.amazon.com/Under-Banner-Heav ... 400032806/

Dating Jesus by Susan Campbell http://www.amazon.com/Dating-Jesus-Fund ... 807010723/

Jesus Girl by Hannah Faith Notess http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Girls-Evang ... 606085417/

Unorthodoxy by Deborah Feldman http://www.amazon.com/Unorthodox-Scanda ... 439187010/

Fiction:

The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman http://www.amazon.com/Sunne-Splendour-N ... 31237593X/

The Snares of Death by Kate Charles http://www.amazon.com/Snares-Death-Kate ... 446401951/

Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis http://www.amazon.com/Elmer-Gantry-Sinc ... 003AKV04M/

The Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds http://www.amazon.com/Rapture-Canaan-Sh ... 425162443/

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood http://www.amazon.com/Handmaids-Tale-Ev ... 307264602/

*I'm putting amazon links so you can read what the books are about.

I think once a month is reasonable. Thanks for assembling the list. Does everyone here know about worldcat.org? You can enter book titles and find the nearest library that has a copy.

I loved the Rapture of Canaan, but it's been years since I read it. I'd really be interested in doing so again.

Daughter of the Saints: Growing Up In Polygamy (aka Predators, Prey and other Kinfolk) by Dorothy Allred Solomon was pretty amazing.

Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer is a non-fiction book that goes in depth into murders that took place in an FLDS cult.
