    The book club

What happened to the book club? Bethella was running it and (s)he still seems to be around, but I haven't been a post for either of the last 2 books: August 1: Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by John Krackauer September 1: Was America Founded as a Christian Nation?: A Historical Introduction by John Fea Is anyone still interested in doing the book club? It wasn't the most active discussion, but I still enjoyed it. I would certainly be up for continuing it. (Having said that, I actually didn't read the last two books--I didn't have time for Banner of Heaven and as a non-American, the Sep pick didn't interest me much. But if anyone else read them I'd be interested in following the discussion.) Oct 1 is supposed to be The Handmaid's Tale and I would like to have a discussion about that! Bethella do you still want to keep running the book club? If not I could give it a shot...

    Book Club

Some of us have been discussing starting a book club. The discussion starts here viewtopic.php?f=14&t=11550&start=120#p465274 In anticipation of getting started: I'm thinking we should aim for one book a month, perhaps alternating fiction and non-fiction. What do people think about this? Do you have any suggestions to go on a list (to be voted on at later date)? I'll probably wait until we get a list of 15-20 books, then we can vote on them. For my suggestions: Fiction: The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman (in honor of finding a body they think is Richard III) Non-Fiction: Escape by Carolyn Jessop
  4. Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back by Frank Schaeffer I liked this one. Something about his openness about what he though during his evangelical days appealed to me. One thing that stuck out to me in the craziness of his childhood was the overly-frank sex talks/information he got from his mother. Was anyone else disturbed by it? While I think that parents should be teaching their children about sex, it seemed like his mother crossed a line talking about her own sex life to a young child. But maybe I'm just a prude. I haven't had any exposure to Schaeffer's work outside of this book, so I'm wondering what other people who know more about him think about his claims regarding his influence in the development of the evangelical pro-life movement. Do you think he was as influential as he made himself out to be? Or is he inflating or exaggerating his importance? I can't help wondering if the movement would have developed the way it did without his contributions. Given the other fundies who were out there at that time (that I know more about) I suspect that it would have developed anyway, but maybe not. What did other people think? Updated Schedule July 1: In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible and How it Changed a Nation, a Language and a Culture by Alister McGrath August 1: Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by John Krackauer September 1: Was America Founded as a Christian Nation?: A Historical Introduction by John Fea October 1: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
  5. Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright Before starting this book I didn't know much about Scientology other than it's considered to be a kooky religion by most people, there are a lot of books and Tom Cruise is a member and he's always creeped me out, even as a kid. I was rather surprised at how unhinged Ron Hubbard appears to have been. His interpersonal relationships seem so disfunctional and his relationship with the teenage Messengers is just creepy even if there didn't seem to be a sexual component to it- you can groom a child without being overtly sexual about it. Without having lived through it I keep wondering how people can be so brainwashed as to accept his dictates as normal or appropriate, those punishments on the boats sound down right sadistic. I wasn't able to finish the book due to real life and getting the book late from the library. In the last thread Rita asked about moving the discussions to once a month. Given that I haven't managed to finish the last two books in time I'm starting to think she's right. Would people prefer to keep it at twice a month or move to once a month? If we go to once a month does starting the thread on the first of the month still work for people? Any other ideas or suggestions? 6. A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard I don't have time to post my thoughts now, I'll try to get them up later today. April 15: Quiverfull by Kathryn Joyce May 1: Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright May 15: Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back by Frank Schaeffer June 1: In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible and How it Changed a Nation, a Language and a Culture by Alister McGrath June 15: Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by John Krackauer July 1: Was America Founded as a Christian Nation?: A Historical Introduction by John Fea July 15: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
