:ew: :wtf:

the fact that Maxim wants to put any popular American female sports figure basically naked and airbrushed on one of their covers is offensive enough.

I think she is cute, myself!

She played an outstanding game of tennis. What is wrong with people?

She is not tall or blonde but she is very cute. I'm not certain why anyone would say anything negative about her looks. I must be missing something because she is attractive. However, even if she was extremely ugly, so what? (She isn't) The woman is an athlete who is obviously in good enough shape to beat other women. What else matters?

I think winning Wimbledon sort of trumps twitter comments from knuckle draggers. People have said similar about Serena Williams, my hope is both these athletes laugh all the way to the bank about this BS

She would smoke all those guys in 3 sets in less than 15 minutes.

I love her comment:

On the bright side, when asked about BBC commentator John Inverdale remarks on her "never going to be a looker" (yeah that’s right, she received this shit from the BBC too), Bartoli said:

"It doesn’t matter, honestly. I am not blonde, yes. That is a fact. Have I dreamt about having a model contract? No. I’m sorry. But have I dreamed about winning Wimbledon? Absolutely, yes."

And that’s one of the many actual reasons Marion Bartoli “deserves" to be Wimbledon Champion.

I feel so sad for her that her achievements have to be criticized only due to her looks. It doesn't matter what she looks like...she is an exceptional and talented athlete who won fair and square.

I noticed some of those twitter account idiots were pictured with their female other halves...I hope they see what their mouth breathing idiot partners have said and dump their asses. If they will say that about an anonymous female athlete I can't imagine what douchery happens in their real lives.

I think shes beautiful.

Anyway, it doesnt matter. Theres more to life than being attractive, and I bet none of these Twitter assholes could play a sport that well.

I don't get it... My other half thought she was hot... Apparently he likes thighs (good thing too!), cause he's a Serena fan, also.

This makes me want to scream, puke, or cry. Possibly a combination of the three. First of all, she's lovely. Second of all, I shouldn't even have to say that. Makes me think of how some men (not all, of course) will say "UGH. Lesbians. GROSS." Yet they're A-OK with watching chicks go to town on each other in a porno.

Sometimes I love humanity. Other times I kind of feel like the Unabomber had a point.

I will be honest here and say the part of the appeal in watching men's tennis is the men. I like to watch fit, athletic men do athletic things. Good looking is a bonus. What I don't understand here is the need to attack a woman who is amazingly good but isn't attractive to you personally? I never found Pete Sampras attractive and I never bought tickets to see him play but I can still say he was an incredible player. I have never thought of him as not deserving to win just because I did not find him attractive. I certainly didn't feel the need to scream this all over the Internet.

this quote is from Patty Stanger, the Millionaire Matchmaker. she is absolutely serious and has always struck a nerve with me.

Men want Martha Stewart in the kitchen ,Mary Poppins in the nursery and a porn star in bedroom

That about says it all about how women are viewed in our 'liberated' era

This is terrible. Hint to all the people on Twitter: someone who wins Wimbledon is automatically far more accomplished than all the people taking cheap shots at her. I couldn't finish the article though, it was pretty disgusting.

She played an amazing game. I'm really not that into tennis but her winning match was incredible. She might not conform to a misogynist's standards but I didn't find her fat or ugly at all.

social media lets people hang out their stupid so much easier. I think a lot of this crap is just said because they can do it behind a computer. like all the stupid death and violent threats we see today. Just idiots that use something to feel big when they are just little peons with no life.

She should say meet you on the court and we will see who is the bitch now.

Social media wasn't around in the '80s and for much of the '90s, but does anyone know if the likes of Navratilova, Graf (tall and blonde, yes, but not really "pretty"), Seles etc got similar treatment?

Jennifer Capriati got a huge amount of flack from the media when she dared to develop acne in her late teens. She was the medias darling at 13-14 when she was first noticed at an international level but around 16-17-18 when she developed acne she was attacked by the media and dumped by at least one sponsor. (The sponsor was a make up company, can't remember which, who should have realised the risk in signing a young teen. I imagine being dropped because you are no longer pretty enough would be pretty hard on your self esteem.)

It really pisses me off that women still get all this shit about looks. Nobody's commenting on how hot they think Andy Murray is! It's the same in politics though - Hilary Clinton and Angela Merkel are compared and contrasted - not because of their policies but because of their looks! Also everyone conveniently forgot that the last time a Brit won Wimbledon before Murray was in 1977 when Virginia Wade won.....

How dare a fat woman accomplish something! As a fat woman I apologize to the straight men of the world on Marion Bartoli's behalf.

Now, if you excuse us fat women, we will go back to being in the corner and avoiding eye contact with our betters

Yes how dare a woman who is any less than the boring, conventional beauty standard go out in public!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree ... -inverdale

Andy Murray is hardly what magazines tell me is what I think a hot male should look like (though I personally like my men goofy looking and Scottish). But no one brings that up in light of his accomplishment - and rightfully so.

It seems so many men think the only purpose of women's sports should be for young, nubile and fit women run around getting slightly sweaty for their own enjoyment. Who cares about actual athletic accomplishment? So when women like the Williams twins or Marion come along and actually have the gall to not look like Maria Sharapova or Anna Kournikova. We can easily see this in basketball...does the broadcasting world pay any attention to the WNBA other than a footnote at the bottom of the screen? When do we see the female shot putters when the track and field events are broadcasted? That is right....a large portion of men will only tune in if the women are acceptably hot to them.

On a final note, I'm glad I had a father who encourage me athletically, despite the fact I was not, still and never will be acceptably hot enough for sports. Because it's about me and my accomplishment, not about what some armchair asshole thinks about me.
