Love=/=Pain; or, Why Katie is my favorite Botkin

I was just over at Katie Botkin's site to look at her Iceland pics, and I found this: "When Love is Pain". Wow--does she ever nail what's wrong with the Christian Right's corporal punishment fetish.

ETA: Here's more: "Corporality"

The first time this correlation occurred to me was a few years ago. I was using a conservative Christian guy’s work computer to log on to the internet, and I hit the initial w in www. The first suggestion that popped up based on his internet history was for a masochistic porn site.

My snarky cynical side wants to know if the conservative Christian guy was a Robotikin cousin. I think child abuse in the name of Jesus explains a lot of their repressed dominionist thinking....

How is she related to the Botkin family?

Her father and the Botkinettes' father are brothers.

I can't with the comments between fauxKatie and Katie B.

I cannot imagine a scenario in which spanking produces the results God intends if God is not involved. I don’t care how crazy or outlandish it sounds, but spanking is for Christians. I think spanking should be limited to (a) thoughtful Christian parents who believe that God alone is the instrument for instructing the heart (b) parents who were not abused as children and © who are willing to learn not to react in anger.

So, spanking only works if you're Christian. :?

She writes, in reference to the idea that punishment is an expression of love

if you wouldn’t accept that in a boyfriend, why would you accept it in your theology?

Words to live by. It saddens me though to remember that some of the fundamentalists we snark on here accept that both from their religion and from their spouse.

She also says that God is present when a parent spanks a child like how God is present during the Eucharist.

Now, speaking as a Christian, that is pretty near blasphemy to me. I don't think that all parents who spank are child abusers, but spanking just seems unnecessary to me - and a long long way from being sacred in any sense.

but don't you believe that God is present EVERYWHERE?

Sort of - but at the Eucharist it's an active participation (for me - I'm not a memorialist).

I feel like God's omnipresence is less actively being everywhere and rather the capability to be everywhere. I certainly don't believe God is everywhere in an animist sense.

She is awesome.

It would be interesting to see how many of the kids whos parents used the Pearl method of child training are currently asking their partner to spank them or watching BDSM porn.

I like the comment about parents who'd been abused not spanking.

Now, if only verbal, emotional, sexual, and spiritual abuse could be limited...

Katie B is great - a very impressive young woman. You have to wonder what A-S & E think since Katie B was not raised with the Botkin prescription for parental success.

FakeKate just sounds desperate and angry - like she knows she's wrong but is not going to give in.
