What do do when your son is now grown but unmarried? You've raised him to be completely dependent on women to do his cooking, mending, cleaning, laundry, etc., and with no woman in sight now what? You've done everything right to teach him to expect servitude in his adulthood and now without a woman, a wife, who will do his daily bidding of the homemaking necessities? Should you allow him to try and become independent and make his own home alone? Should you pass him off to one of his married sisters to take care of him? Or should you expect him to remain at home being served by his siblings?

First let's take a look at what could happen if he went out on his own. Naturally he would require a maid and a cook. What are the temptations for a young man? Suppose he would impregnate a non-believer out of wedlock? Heaven forbid! Add to this the temptations of the world. Escort services, internet porn. The imagination is limitless here.

Now if he moves on to one of his married sisters to take care of him - will her husband approve. This could result in unnecessary family strife.

Yes, he should remain at home until you could find or pay someone to be his wife. Good luck - you've done a great job so far!

If he had internet, you can bet your boots he would not use it for studying, doing home based work, watching news, a few movies, no. They have such awesome ways of raising godly children, yet none are allowed to be in the real world to see how awesome their upbringing really was. If the way they raise their children is the way of their god, shouldn't those children be able to take the world by storm and never even be tempted by women (or men) or drugs or alcohol or education or independent thought?

It really is a glaring flaw. Even they know they are doing their children a disservice. They don't trust their own actions or ways so of course they can't trust the offspring they raised that way either.

If someone like Steve Maxwell truly raised his kids as god wanted him to, he wouldn't still have all of his children, including the married ones, under his thumb doing his bidding. He wouldn't have to block the Internet from their computers & phones; he wouldn't have to dictate what they read, see, listen to, do. He wouldn't have to 'protect' them from 'worldly' people. If what he did was truly right and good for them, they'd be able to make all those decisions on their own. They wouldn't want to talk to worldly people or read a book or watch the news. They'd know it was a sin. Instead, he keeps them bound to him with manipulation, fear tactics, lies, obsession, and flat out control.

Not such a win in the child raising department.

What's sad is every really fundy family I know, it ends up being a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts. All of them have at least one child that totally rebelled, usually involving drugs or alcohol. Instead of realizing "Hey, we raised our kids in such a way that they hate us and run as far from our lifestyle as they can and they have trouble coping in the real world" they use it as validation "SEE!!!!! That's why you should accept the fact that your only independence is going to be living in the garage apartment instead of the garage! Otherwise you'll end up on drugs and in jail like _______." It's sad.

Isn't there a cultural phenomenon in Italy, where many men still live with their parents? The Italian Mamma's Boy is a stereotype based on fact. One that my own Mom is guilty to allowing to happen in her house. My brother lived at home until he was 29. She did his laundry, folded it, and put it away for him. She cooked for him. Mailed out bills that appeared on the counter. Etc. My other brother is 22, and he's at home with no reason to leave. Now that he's the only one left in the house, he's got the whole upper floor to himself!

An unmarried man would move in with his brother after his father dies. His sister-in-law would wait on him hand and foot, and she wouldn't be allowed to object to it, being a submissive little helpmeet and all. Or he could just find some young fundie girl to marry and take over his dad's house and move her in. Fundie girls loose their marriageability as they age, but not so much with fundie boys. I hadn't really thought about it as much, but really the sons are just as unprepared for real life as the daughters, just in somewhat different ways. I mean, if they do leave home and leave extreme fundiedom, they are still saddled with a ton of assumptions about sex roles that I can see leading to disaster in almost any dealings with women.

Hell, in my time at this job I have developed a distinct distaste for older, presumably Mormon, men from Utah because they talk down to me. True, a lot of older men tend to talk down to younger women, but as a group the Utah contingent is by far the most consistent and the worst I have ever encountered. I don't say anything, I really can't, but it bugs me no end! And mainstream Mormons aren't even in the same league of misogyny as the super-fundies. I'm sure they think I'm a cute young thing working for a few years before I find that husband and all. I do sound very young both on the phone and in person. But that's no excuse.

Given the number of stay-at-home fundie sons and daughters discussed on FJ who are well into their 20s, 30s, and in some cases pushing 40, one does have to wonder! The phrase "multi-generational faithfulness" has always struck me as code for "severely control freak parents too paranoid and insecure, and in some cases downright crazy, to let go."
