FJ and perspective on films

This is another one of those "how FJ has affected the way you see things" subjects.

I find myself thinking of the issues and people we discuss here when watching films I've seen many times.

Last night, TCM showed Elmer Gantry -- connections are obvious with this one, since it is about an aspect of religion in the US (revivalism). And:

- people making a buck off of others' faith

- biblical literacy vs. more generalized religion vs. atheism

- creationism vs. science

- religious ecstacy vs. (or as part of!) sexual feeling

- religious ideas and practice turning into a damaging force

- faith healing

- taking the idea of trusting God to protect you so literally that you refuse to leave a burning building, and try to prevent others from doing so, as well!

This morning, I am watching The Big Country, which has an underlying theme of real courage vs. perceived courage, machismo, etc. It also involves:

- a false perception of the "solid citizen" vs. "trash"

-a daddy-worshipping overprotected daughter vs. a strong independent woman

- pretending that an issue is moral when it is really about power/money/politics

- facing one's demons privately vs. making a show of it

- people who are open to change vs. those who are rigid

I recommend both films to anyone, but especially to the perceptive folks here.

Oh, and looking at Burt Lancaster and Gregory Peck is always pleasant!

So, has reading FJ and/or perusing Fundie blogs reminded you of any movies, or affected the way you see them?

Thanks for the film suggestions. I write a series at my blog called "Retro Reels." I'll have to look into these films.

Reading fundie blogs and the rise of the tea party, right-wing media and the likes of Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck et al has influenced some of my choices. Here is a great film that I think my fellow Jingerites might like, "A Face in the Crowd." It came out in 1957 but it is very, very timely.

Oh, yeah -- in fact, I think we've discussed it here on FJ a few times.

Keith Olbermann's nickname for Glenn Beck is "Lonesome Roads."

The next film they showed that day was set in Christchurch, New Zealand. So my FJ-brain made me think of the Botkins.
