Why Fundies hate Disney

Well I don't know the real reason but a few whackjobs on youtube give their input.

Remember not safe for work or watching with children. Really, no joke.

I know there was and still is some subliminal messages in Disney and other movies but some of this is really over reaching for something to bitch about. The "facts" about Disney and even Freemasons is just laughable. Why do you think fundies are so anti Disney?

Just for fun, which 2 disney movies in the above list were heavily edited to prove a point? Free dark side cookies if you can guess right.

I don't think there are any true subliminal messages in Disney. It seems like I heard somewhere that this is just a rumor. There are a few funny things thrown in there by animators with bad senses of humor--the penis on the front of The Little Mermaid, for example--but they are not subliminal messages and certainly will not influence anyone.

Disney made this, which is weird:

The big hubub happened in the mid 90's when the southern baptists decided to boycott Disney because they offered benefits to same sex partners.

i must say, i am ROLLING on the floor laughing at the satan winnie the pooh vid!

but, srsly, do people really believe all that about the freemasons? my aunt and uncle were freemasons and they most certainly didn't worship satan. and who cares if ol' walt was one of them?

and somebody should tell that pastor that eisner couldn't have married his gay partner in florida, due to the little fact that the florida constitution recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman only. DURRR DURRRR:::::::ME CANT DU RESERCH::::BUT LISTEN TO ME NEWAYZ!!!!!!!

and what was that fourth vid from? i don't recognize that movie at all.

oh, and the whole "mr. tumnus/pan" thing...uh, disney didn't create that character, c.s. lewis - a known CHRISTIAN author - wrote him as a faun. so, yeah.

and i don't know which two movies were heavily edited because it's been so freakin long since i've seen them.

A relative of mine had a seasonal job at Disneyland back then and he remembers when the boycott started. My relative stopped working at Disney in 96, but he still lives in Orange County and he said that several churches and denominations in the area have boycotted Disney. He said that some Crystal Cathedral members tried to protest Disneyland, but they backed off.

I personally love it when Disney throws in little things to amuse parents, like when Hercules is posing in a lion skin and it is the bad lion from the Lion King. I have gone through the suspicious part of the Lion King frame by frame looking for the "Sex" in the stars and I could never see it. The Little Mermaid penis I did find... once someone told me about it. srsly, the kids are not being harmed by this shit.

You got that right, my parents did jackshit when they realize there was a penis on the cover of one of out videos and my sister and I turned out fine. It made for great giggling when we were older (but not adult) and that's about all it did to us.

I find the Mry Poppins trailer up there pretty scary. :)

Even if there's "SEX" written in it , come one. People who have 10+ children can't really deny they like it.

one of the hypocrisies I never got about fundies.

According to snopes, the penis on the front cover was an accident - IIRC it was drawn by a tired (and Christian) illustrator as a bit of a rush job and he was mortified when it was pointed out :)

I can see the cloud in the Lion King but again as I remember it says SFX not "sex". Ages since I saw it though. So yeah, the animators do throw stuff in as wee in jokes. But doesn't everyone do that at work?

A lot Disney movies show young adults leaving abusive or ordinary lives and going for bigger and better things. I can see why a lot of fundie parents wouldn't want to show their kids movies like that ;) Plus all the (non godly) singing, dancing, girls with seashell bras, shirtless guys, unmarried's kissing, and magic, that stuff probably hurts the movies too.

The fourth video is of The Wizard of Oz which was NOT Disney at all, but was a MGM film. I haven't watched the video yet, but it looks like they've got a bit of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon graphic added. It's just a serendipitous thing, but Dark Side of the Moon synchs pretty well/perfectly with TWOO as a soundtrack. There have been showings of TWOO with Dark Side of the Moon played as the film's soundtrack. It's pretty cool. Btw, the scene shown is where Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion are approaching the Emerald City. "We're out of the woods...."

Shotgun Opera, your uncle may have been a Mason, but I don't think your aunt was -unless things have really changed. My dad, my granddad and several uncles were Masons, but my mom was in the Order of the Eastern Star which is open to both women related to Masons and the Masons themselves. I helped Mom set up the lodge hall for meetings many times. The points of the star on the floor of the hall represent five women from the Bible. One thing I remember from Eastern Star meetings was the great pre-installation covered dish dinners. My mom's chapter had some wonderful cooks!

Oh yeah, the SEX thing in the cloud in The Lion King. That supposedly was found by a five year old. Really? A five year old kid did a frame-by-frame advance of the tape to be able to see that? And he could read SEX and knew what it meant?

The Winnie the Pooh video is a fake. The video component is in bad shape and that is definitely not Sterling Holloway doing Pooh's voice.

The Scary Mary trailer isn't fundie, it was part of a trend that was going on about five years ago to edit benign children's movies and make horror movie trailers out of them. It says "original" because it was one of the first fake trailers, and probably most well-known.

To be completely accurate, you don't have to advance the Lion King frame by frame to see SFX or SEX in the wind - my husband and I saw the re-release a few weeks ago and grinned at each other like juveniles when we saw it (neither of us had a paranoid or fundie upbringing, but kids pointed all this stuff out to each other). The other one that got a lot of attention was the supposed line where Aladdin tells the tiger "All good teenagers take off your clothes." Ah, memories. I don't personally know one parent who actually put stock or cared about any of that. Not only was my Little Mermaid cover the phallic one, I had a poster of it as well!

The confirmed bit of porn in Disney was a specific release of the Rescuers that actually had a frame of porn in there if you slowed it down - but it was caught early and removed. Maybe laser disc?

There IS something a little risque in The Brave Little Toaster, that I spotted as a ten or eleven year old on my little sister's VHS copy, but I've never seen anything on the internet, though I've looked over the years...

There's a bit in Bedknobs and Broomsticks where the young boy says out of nowhere "What's that got to do with my knob?"

I was watching it with a group of friends in first year at uni and we all about wet ourselves.

Disney has a lot of worryingly anti-feminist messages, but I would let my kids watch the films no problem, I'd just discuss with them a bit why it's problematic that Belle falls in love with the Beast, etc. I watched them all 3000 times and still turned out delightful.

Oooh, fascinating! The part I was talking about is here, at 27 seconds:

However, as I was fond of showing my middle-school buddies, the scene I had showed a more busty woman with stars over her nipples - not the tame-looking bikini I'm seeing here. I suppose my memory could be warped, but I was no prude, nor were my friends...

I agree some of the stories have messages that are not good, but they can be talked about with kids.

Tangled seems to have pissed a lot of them off because it hits too close to home. Even my five year old can tell that Rapunzel's situation is not cool.

I really really liked wherever someone pointed out that in the original version of the story the woman finds out about the prince's visits because Rapunzel's dresses are getting tighter round the middle -- the moral being that you can literally lock your children in a tower and they will grow up anyway. I thought that was amazing and I'd never heard it before. I can see fundies hating that pretty hard.

I haven't laughed that hard in ages, thank you! I love how number 4's "facts" came straight from Wikipedia. That just seals the deal for me in terms of how messed up some of these people are.

I loved Disney movies and I will have my children watch them. I own quite a few and am always looking for more.

When I was about 14, I lost a standing babysitting gig because the mom found out that I had been allowed to watch Disney movies and she was unhappy.

OMG that Disney mentruation video!

Menstruation is perfectly normal! Just be sure not to take showers that are too hot or too cold or get emotionally upset or get a cold or constipation or exert yourself by doing stuff like cleaning too hard and NEVER slouch and if you have someone watch you to make sure you don't hurt yourself you can touch your toes for exercise.

Jesus fucking christ I'm glad I didn't live then.
