Down with DOTs!!!!

Friends, when we want to break a link, let's pledge to keep away from the CAPS LOCK key. No "DOT" in place of periods/decimal points

The option is so easy:

Copy/paste the link into your post, like so:

http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com

Delete the "http://www." Or if there's no "www.", just delete the "http:"

Your readers will only have to copy/paste the resulting info into their browser bars, hit "enter" & they'll get right to the page. OK, they might have to key in the "http://www." - no big whoop, am I right?

It would be so appreciated, especially by speshul snowflakes like myself who do most surfing on a smartphone.

That's my one request for allyall. Kthxbai!

There should be a rule against them.

Right, because we can't just put on our big girl/boy panties and deal with it on a case to case basis. Rules make EVERYTHING better!!!

I agree, ban DOTS. But no official rules about it. It's just common courtesy. I mean, we needed them on the old site (IIRC) but this board doesn't link them unless you have the http and all that so just posting the address without it is much simpler.

Don't ban them. If the link is broken, shouldn't matter how it's done. I will continue to break links however I please.

THIS THIS THIS!!

It is almost impossible to remove the dots on mobile devices. It's really frustrating finding a link with DOT (or even multiple DOTs) because on a mobile device it takes so long to edit it, if you even can. If the link is truncated too then you cannot open the link. I don't even bother with the links now if they have DOT in them.

It's not hard to leave off the http: // bit, I'd even say that it is faster for people to do that, then to mess around putting the DOT in there.

Agreed. I just pass on the links with DOT. Why make something difficult when the option is so much easier?

Geez when your eyes are as bad as mine, I'm trying to fill in dots and wasting time trying to get the link. Have some compassion, please!!

Yup. When I visit here on my iPhone and can't access the DOT-links, I want to scream with frustration. Well, more or less.

DON'T TAKE AWAY MY CAPS LOCK KEY!!!! Just kidding, but I totally agree on not using DOTS it seems like a lot more work for both the person breaking the link and the people following the link. And on an unrelated note, have you ever noticed that the words "caps lock" on the caps lock key is all written in lower case letters? Weird.

First thing I thought too. LOL I've never seen anyone flip out about breaking links like she did. Was CJ raised a liberal athiest and then turned into a conservative Christian, because that is what makepeace said about herself.

It DOES matter how it is done to those who use mobile devices. But, hey, whatever works for you is all that matters, eh?

I am all for the down with the DOTS plan! They drive me nuts, are irritating, and when there are multiple DOTS (why? what is the point of that?) it can take multiple attempts. I give up if two tries doesn't get me to the link. Not that it matters whether I actually read it or not, but it is being shared for a reason, right? Sharing something people won't bother with kind of defeats the purpose; sharing something people can't even get to does the same thing.

Interesting response for someone named "makepeace".

Yay! Those dots are annoying! I surf on my smartphone most of the time. Its so much easier to visit sites if I don't have to remove words.

I find it nice when there is a standard to how links a broken, so its not a guessing game as to how to unbreak it. But that's just me. :)

As someone who has the make a mental effort to differentiate the letters when she reads (things tend to be blocked together for me so websiteDOTcom is just one weirdly shaped word for me unless I use brain power) it makes it so much easier for me without the DOT.

Plus I'm usually relaxing when reading the links and feel too lazy much of the time to pull out my keyboard and change things.

I'm anti-DOT, also.

Here's another way to look at it.

It's to the advantage of the poster to take off the http instead of doing the DOT, since it enables more people to read what they have to say.

There is so much to read here, I often don't bother with the "DOTted" broken links. And I can't get to them at all if they are long and have an ellipsis replacing the middle. I suspect I've missed some valuable things due to that.

I will try to remember to break them your way then. I am not a mobile user so thank you for highlighting challenges when using a mobile. So whatever works for you, anonymous person I don't know and don't care about ;)
