Waaaay back in the day, during my freshman year of college, I took a course on the american evangelical movement. As with all good liberal arts courses, it came with a ton o reading. Here are a few of the books I kept:

Mine Eyes have Seen the Glory - http://www.amazon.com/Mine-Eyes-Have-Se ... 0195131800 - one of my favorites, vignettes into a wide variety of evangelical and fundie movements

Understanding Fundamentalism and Evangelicalism - http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Fun ... pd_sim_b_7

Redeeming America - Piety and Politics of the Christian Right - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/080784 ... T6GMMSY119

Onward Christian Soldier - http://www.amazon.com/Onward-Christian- ... pd_sim_b_1

Revive us Again - http://www.amazon.com/Revive-Us-Again-R ... 0195129075

And, there was a show on Aimee Semple McPherson on "Being" last weekend, one of the people we read about. Have to download the podcast to listen to this week - http://being.publicradio.org/programs/2 ... ter-aimee/

Anyone have other must read recommendations?

If you are brave and want to go to the primary source, several of R.J. Rushdoony's articles are available for free through the Chalcedon Institute (chalcedon.edu). Of particular note is "Christian Reconstruction" (chalcedon.edu/topics/christian-reconstruction/).

For a really frightening read try Jeff Sharlet's books. Reading "C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy" has completely changed my voting strategy...meshes quite nicely with the Vision Forum/ Reconstructionist/ Botkin agenda... :(

for his other works:

Off for more fundie nightmares....

If you are looking for a more scholarly book I highly recommend the texts compiled by the Fundamentalism Project. This was the text that we were assigned for the History of Fundamentalism class at University- http://www.amazon.com/Fundamentalisms-O ... 759&sr=1-7

There are more volumes in the series but I am only familiar with that particular volume. I squeed like a fan girl when I saw Stuart Appleby on "Religion in America'" on PBS.

I plan on reading some of Rushdoony's works in the future (for educational purposes only, of course). I think I'll probably have to take blood pressure medication afterwards, though.

I have a few on my kindle wish list, but one i can definitely recommend is "Salvation on Sand Mountain" by Dennis Covington. It's subtitle is "Snake handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia".
